Bill,
What gun did you start with making the Richards conversion.

I have 3 ASM's and an Uberti.  I would like to convert both one of the ASM's and the Uberti.

Can these both be converted with the present cylinder, or is the depth of the locking lug too deep on them?

I have one going in the shop that I work on a little as I get time (between the flintlocks.)

Thanks,

Lloyd

Lloyd,

Are these 1860's you want to convert??
I use Uberti's, the ASM would be good too, I tend to stay away from Piettas because their over all specifications are not very close to the original Colts..... and they tend to over harden their frames. Now thats just my preference.

The cylinder on this one is the original percussion cylinder. You have to chamber the gun at a slight angle to keep from getting into the cylinder stops, I have a jig set-up on a rotary table that I use for this.

Bill,
Thanks.  These are all 1860's.  One of the ASM's I put on an ASM Navy grip and one of those .44 octagon barrels.  It fits my hand better than the larger Army grip.

The only thing I was worried about was the depth of the cylinder locking lugs.  I think I have the rest of it down.

The Rifle Shoppe has the ejector rod housing and the Richards breechblock listed in their catalog.  I don't know what the quality is, and if they deal with these like they do flintlock parts, a person might die of old age before getting them.

Great work. I need to get grips like those for my open tops. You told me where you got them but I lost the email. Can you email me with the information?

Thanks....Fellas...

Lloyd...You may want to reconsider the grip swap...there isn't any documentation that it was done to an 1860. If you are not into historical accuracy (like I am), then it doesn't really matter.

Take your time with the conversion, you'll lean through mistakes/errors just like I did. I converted a couple of these without the benefit of McDowell's book and boy was I off base. That book was a god send as a reference.

The grips come from the "Gripmaker" His real name is Larry Little, address and phone number: 17401 State Hwy 96, Carthage MO. 64836. Phone # 1-417-359-8880

What I like about Larry's grips is that they work like real Ivory.

I took the checkered grips off and put on a new pair with the Mexican Eagle and aged them a little bit. I do a southwestern Apache impression and thought that would be more appropriate. I've aged them ever so slightly. Here's a couple of photos. I like the way the pistol looks and may knock out a few chips in the corner of the grip to give it a hard used look.

Nice job Bill! It looks great. The gun looks like it has seen some use but not abuse.
I like that look on a gun.

Bill,
I know that the octagon barrel and smaller grip on the 1860 is not authentic for a factory conversion.
However, after reading and seeing some of the conversions in McDowell's book
Under the heading of Private Conversions (on page 382) I decided to do it.  There are some real interesting chop jobs in there.

I think the Mexican Eagle grips are much neater than the others. (Although a couple of guns with the other one's are illustrated in McDowell's book.)

I have been thinking of getting a set of the Custer eagle ones for this bastard gun that I will be making.  Oh by the way, it will have a Richards and Mason ejector & housing due to the octagon barrel.  I am also chopping the barrel back to 5 1/2 on it.

Thanks for all the info.

Lloyd
