What was your favorite TV ....
« on: January 16, 2007, 01:57:26 AM »
What was your favorite TV Western?

I grew up watching practically all them with my Dad. I think it was a toss-up between Bonanza or Gunsmoke with him. My favorite was Chuck Conners as The Rifleman, with Nick Adams as Johnny Yuma in the Rebel coming in as my second favorite.

Boy, wasn't it great back then, when we never worried about the guns' time period??! I'd sure like to see them bring those all back on TV rather than the crap they put on now-a-days.

I am a little young for the major western era.  So, I had to catch the syndication of the westerns.  So, I have to say some of my favorites were Rawhide, Rifleman, Wagon Train and of course Gunsmoke.  I still watch Gunsmoke on TV Land on a regular basis.

I have to say that I received the Season One of Magnificent Seven.  Which was a 90's western.  I have say that I have really liked the episodes that I have seen.  I don't remember it being on when it was first run.  But, it is really cool.  I like the different guns that they use in it.  They even have one of the guys using a sawed off rifle like McQueen used in Wanted Dead or Alive.

I can remember always waiting on Saturday night, all the biggies,  Bonanza, Gunsmoke, Have Gun will Travel,  when I was real young I remember getting my guns ready for the shows, put em on and when the shooting started, I'd be right there with the good guys living that shoot out with em.

We got our first TV set in 1953, so I got to see all the early TV Westerns.  We only had two TV stations at that time, one was the CBS station and the other was the NBC station.  We got ABC in about 1960.  I watched them all:  The Texan, The Restless Gun, Trackdown, Wanted Dead or Alive, Tales of Wells Fargo, Bonanza, Wagon Train, Have Gun Will travel, Rawhide, Maverick, Cheynenne, Sugarfoot, Bronco, Colt 45, Lawman, The Deputy, Wyatt Earp, The Rifleman, The Rebel, The Texas Rangers, and my personal favorite show,  Gunsmoke.  Shotgun Slade, Bat Masterson, Jim Bowie, and Yancey Derringer.  Later shows included, The Virginian, Laramie, Cimmaron Strip, and Branded.   AMC has Saturday Morning Westerns and the Western Channel both of which keep the Western Movies alive for us guys that grew up, sitting in front of our tv sets, wearing our sixguns and helping the good guys get the bad guys.  I still haven't grown up, I still like to  watch them and I get to go out catch the bad guys. I'm one of the good guys and I've been catching bad guys for 36 years.

I loved "Have Gun" because it was the most literate. I also liked the quirky ones. "Yancey Derringer" starred legendary stuntman Jock Mahoney and his favored weapon was a sheath knife, something you rarely saw in those days, and his sidekick Pahoo favored a knife and a sawed-off shotgun. It was a nice change from the inevitable six-shooters. I caught "The Iron Horse" on Armed Forces tv in Vietnam and liked that about half the characters were immigrants, as they so often were in the real West. You never heard so many Scottish, German and Norweigan accents in your life, all around the same poker table.

DITTO!

I loved them all.  Used to strap on my guns and get out the Winchester lever POP GUN and blaze away at the bad guys when the LONE RANGER was on.
Listen!  Do you hear that?  The roar of Cannons and the screams of the dying.  Ahh!  Music to my ears.

Cimmaron Strip cames to mind first.  Recollect a gal named Dulcey??  But I've never ever seen it on re-runs.
I did catch the Rifleman a few weeks ago.  That was one I liked a lot too.

I think it's a toss-up between Maverick and Have Gun Will Travel. Wanted Dead or Alive and Nickels were close behind.

Hotel de Paree, with Earl Holliman as the gunslinger with the deadliest hatband in the west, and Strother Martin as his sidekick. The opening credits were well ahead of their time, with animated cartridges clicking into the chambers of a realistically rotating Colt cylinder. It was the sort of animation you expect to see now. Honestly, I can't remember the details of a single episode, but I remember the quirky casting and oddball gimmicks.
Trackdown had the greatest theme music.

Really liked 'The Virginian', 'Rawhide' and 'Have Gun Will Travel' and rather liked 'Branded'
Also really liked I think it was called 'Destry Rides Again'

I have always treasured an original 4th printing of 'The Virginian'. published in 1904. Its a great book.
