....can anyone identify what this die is. I traded for some stuff and got a set of mismatched dies and various pieces.

Looks like an expander die.  Is there a plug inside?
Civilize them with a Krag . . .

.....that's my thought also. No, it's just a bare die. It came in a box with one complete resizer die. Then two other dies and a bunch of mismatched pieces. The other die is an marked expander die but no usable expander.

Does a sized case enter it freely?

Slamfire

It may be a crimping die for the FTX bullets as they use shorter brass ( 45-70 ) than standard 45-70's.

......no it doesn't Chuck. I pulled my good die set and checked how the brass fit in those. A piece of unsized brass fits halfway(ish) in the sized die and bottoms out in the expander die then almost bottoms in the seat/crimp die. The brass stops about the same distance as the other complete sizer die. Doesn't tell me what it is, gives me a good idea. Thanks guys, these are just pieces parts.
