Woo Hoo! Just got a Baker Tent!
« on: October 11, 2012, 04:11:38 PM »
Hi,

I just bought a Baker Tent! Only two issues:

All the historical societies say that there is no provenance for a Baker Tent on the Left Coast ...The tent is too sensible not to have been used out here: if anyone has some Pacific Rim provenance for this ten before 1900, I would be very obiliged if it would be shared ....

although this picture of the tent shows the main braces holding the ridge pole to be to poles lashed together, another pic that I have shows the main brace to be just one pole, with 'Y' crotches that support the ridge pole ....

Any thoughts on either?

My moniker is my great grandfather's name. He served with the 2nd Florida Mounted Regiment in the Civil War. Afterward, he came home, packed his wife into a wagon, and was one of the first NorteAmericanos on the Frio River southwest of San Antonio ..... Kinda where present day Dilley is ...

Dimensions?

Forty Rod,

I believe about 9'6" (on my living room carpet) ...what tentmakers refer to as 10x 10 (they measure the canvas before the put the seams in it seems). Still, it ought to be enough for an 1850s bedroom area and the stitching horse, ponies, and a table for tools ...Perhaps even a rifle/pistol/holster rack behind everything ....

TTFN,

P.S. Interesting that you should bring dimensions up just as I was measuring the tent .... I hope to replace the 'Xd' front poles with some saplings with a built-in crotch for the front ridgepole ...

This will pretty much take up the left side of the tent ....

Dimensions?

Forty Rod,

Sorry, I got carried away ... the dimensions are supposed to be 10 Ft X 10 ft,; 3 ft high in the rear and 7ft high at the ridgepole ....
It also came with an optional privacy curtain that ties to the ridge pole so that the flap can be left up and privacy observed ....

So that means the pool table stays at home, huh.

That's a good size.  Coop Trawlaine had one about that size that we used a few times before he died.  I was enough for two and all our gear.

Forty Rod,

My personna is that of a miner who forsake mining and works (sews odd-jobs/repairs) for a saddlemaker in Sacramento,

As such, the 10X 10 footprint of the tent will have enough room for an old bed and my leather working tools ... (i.e., all I need for a long weekend of reenacting).

 Rick,

The pic was taken by a fellow reenactor when I was assisting kids make key chains out of leather last Gold Rush Days ... next GRD (Labor Day)  I hope for the local Tandy to supply the leather and I will get some alphabet stamps ....

Wolfgang,

As soon as I fabricate the poles I will set the tent up and take pics ...
