COLT SAA grip fit $#@@$$#!!
« on: August 05, 2011, 08:14:21 PM »
Is there a differance in COLT SAA grips (shape, size) between 2nd gen and third gen?
For instance ,,will a set of 3rd. gen. factory eagle grips fit a 2nd. gen SAA?

Yes.

Many of the triggerguard/backstrap assemblies do not interchange.

That's why grip makers ask - and that's why replacement grips are oversized.

These were individually fitted at the time.

Not only are there differences in grip shape between generations, there are differences between individual guns of the same generation.  If you have two Colts and the grips will interchange, it is pretty much pure luck.  Sometimes they are close enough to get by but usually they are different enough that each needs to be individually fitted.

The story I have heard, true or not, is that the oversized grips are placed on the unfinished grip frame at the Colt factory and the two are ground down and polished together, hence the variation from one gun to another.

That's an accurate assessment.

Take a look at the raised border on old Hard Rubber grips - and the newer plastic ones, as well - and look at how their raised borders butt agaist the edges of the frame, backstrap and triggerguard.

You'll see quite a bit of differences in thickness there, because that's what the factory added for individual fitting.

A set of Colt grips should fit without a raised edge along the edges - they should feel seamless to the touch, without gaps or warping or any other anomaly.
