Howdy Pards, my name is Elijah Grayson, I'm a Paramedic (hence my username) I'm currently looking to get into CAS and maybe NCOWS. I've been talking to a couple local groups, they've let me shoot several of their guns. I was able to shoot a '73 and '92 in 44wcf and 45 colt, as well as a SSA and a Remington.

With that said I'm torn between a '73 and a '92, I'd prefer the 73 in 44wcf, but I need to use this rifle for hunting deer and hogs (around 50 yards) take camping and hiking, as well as for cas/ncows. Will the the '73 in 44wcf or 45 colt be sufficient in taking deer and hogs if I do may part? I keep hearing how weak the 73's action is, I plan on using the holy black or sammi spec reloads. What's y'alls opinion/suggestions for a new guy.

Silver Creek Slim

There have been a lot of deer harvested with .44 WCF since 1873. BTW, I have a Henry and 1873 in .44 WCF that only use the holy black powder.

73's in 44 WCF have taken deer for 145 years....The action is plenty strong enough for 3fff BP as much as the case will hold and still seat the bullet.

What they said about the '73 taking game.  But you also mentioned hiking and such.  Just keep in mind that the '92 is a fair amount lighter, and considerably less expensive if that matters.

Doc Grayson

I've been looking at the short rifles, "saddle" rifle from cimarron and the trapper carbine, out of those rifles which one would yall suggest for my intended purposes? I know its mostly personal preference though.

River City John

I have a short barrel '66 in .38spl, that just barely holds 10 rounds (a common number used in stages) in the shortened magazine.

If you're getting a Trapper or short barrel in a larger caliber, you may be looking at a lot of reloads on the clock if the magazine does not hold 10. Check capacity.

In general, they are wonderfully light and agile, come up to shoulder quickly. On the other hand, longer barrel = more velocity = reaching out a bit farther.

Have fun with your "givens 'n' druthers".
NCOWS will welcome you warmly to the fire.

I have a 92, with 20" barrel in .45.  I have taken numerous deer (white tail) with it, using LeveRevolution rounds.  You just have to know your range limitations with it.  At 50-75 yards, the deer are DRT.  It is light enough to be comfortable while on a trail walk.  It is my "funnest" gun.  ;D

If I go with the 92, how are the Rossi 92's compared to Taylor's 1892? I keep hearing that the rossi's aren't reliable and that they're very rough out of the box.

Back Roads

I plan on using the holy black or sammi spec reloads.

Keep in mind when using the "Holy Black" that you will get a lot more blow-by when used in a .45 Colt caliber compared to the .44WCF.
The M92 is more complicated to take apart than the '73.  My model 92 is in .45 and my model 73 is a .44WCF.  Myself, I have hunted deer with both.

Just my 2 cents for what it's worth.

take your pick , Buds has them

They seem to have the best prices that I've found online. They have a 24" octagon barrel in 44 mag and the 16" carbine in both 44 mag and 45lc I've been looking at. Just can't decide between the two.

Abilene

Doc, do not get the 16" carbine.  That '92 trapper only holds about 8 rounds.  Great brush / hiking gun but poor choice for CAS

I ordered a Rossi 24" 44 mag, so can shoot 44 special in matches, and 44mag when I'm hunting.

BINGO!

We all can't afford to run out and get one of everything right off, so as a compromise the 24" 1892 in .44 mag will
handle both jobs VERY well. I am still looking for a cheap one....

later, when you feel flush and want Beautiful AND Authentic, the 1873 in .44-40 is ( in my mind) perfect!

I figured I could learn on this one then upgrade later, I really want a 73 in 44wcf and a brace of ssa or Remington's in 44wcf to match.

Well, first of all, it is SAA, not SSA.  As for the Remingtons, here is a 44-40 conversion you can drool over (not mine).

Thank you for correcting me,  ;) I currently have a c&b Remington so that wouldn't be to much of a transition.

Mine was a little rough for the first box of ammo, but firing it took care of the problems.  Remember to "snap" the lever with authority. It has been 100% reliable.

If you have any issues, contact Steve at https://stevesgunz.com/
He also has replacement parts and accessories.  I have bought a ss follower to replace the yellow plastic one, a safety delete and a saddle ring from Steve..

stevesgunz also has a dvd for slicking up the '92.  Probably plenty of youtubes also.  The most improvement often comes from reducing the ejector spring that is inside the bolt.  The tightness you feel the last part of closing the lever is due to that heavy spring.
