reloading 35 Remington
« on: May 08, 2013, 08:11:08 PM »
Is anyone using Unique or Universal Clays for 35 Rem for cowboy shooting?  I can not find any info online and I do not have a Lyman Cast Bullet manual.    Thanks  Jerry

I have the 1973 version of the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook.  It contains data for Unique, and many other shotgun powders from days of yor.  Not for Clays.  I can PM you some data if you let me know what weight of bullet you will be using.

I have Ken Water's Pet Loads.  His only cast bullet loads are with 4227 & 4198

The .35 Remington would not be legal for a main match rifle/carbine, but might work for side matches if your club approves.

Sir Charles,   I'm just searching for info at the present time.  The boolit I may use will be Missouri Bullet Co.  .358 NGC, 158 gr, 18 bhn.  My club ( Custer Sportsmens Club ) has a shoot a couple of times a year for long range pistol and lever action rifle.  I am not shooting SASS, you guys are too competitive for this ol' country boy.  I have 11# of Universal Clays that I use for my 44's and I will substitute it for Unique, I hope.   Thanks  Jerry

Look on Hodgedon's site and if they don't have it give them a call, never have failed to get what I wanted to know from a powder company when I called.

Be old fashioned and use the telephone, it still works and for stuff like this it works better than these new-fangled things.

I just got a reply from Hodgdon, they said that the pressure is too high and too fast a burning powder.  Sooo, hmmmm,  I guess Trail Boss, or 2400, or ???.  I'll continue searching for info.  At present the gun is apart, I'm refinishing the stock, also waiting for a GrovTec barrel clamp for a quick release sling, I don't have brass or boolits or bullets, or dies, about all I have right now is "desire".  PATIENCE.

What am I missing?  Why do you want to use a pistol powder in a rifle cartridge.  I load .35 Rem for deer with 3031 and a 200 gr JRN.  Too high a PF for cowboy.  Why not use a rifle powder and load it down to a PF you want for your purpose?  Like they said it wouldn't be legal for SASS. ???

one reason for pistol powder is to produce essentially gallery loads, generally 10 grains of pistol powder and a cast bullet makes a decent plinking round out to about 100 yards

Thank you Capt. Dan.  I don't hunt any more and paper don't take much killin'.  About all I eat now a days is salmon, crab, halibut and cod. Since WDFW wont let me shoot them I just go after paper.

wow that sounds like the diet of someone from Alaska.

With my 30-40 krag 10 grains AA2 behind a 170 grain 30/30 bullet will put 3 rounds totally concealed by a quarter at 50 yards.

Plan to use that kind of a load if I ever shoot in GAF matches as they have a 1400 FPS max.  For their long range stuff full power loads are allowed.

For most of the 19th  to early 20th Century cartridges there are well accepted loads around the 1400fps level with powders around the UNIQUE range.  I have only tried Universal Clays in 7 x 57R, with equal success as with Unique or Herco.   I have a lifetime supply of Herco that was gifted to me so I don't have to go any further

So do you have leading problems with these gallery loads?  I learn something every day. ;D

For smokeless loads & cast bullets in bottleneck cases, I wrap the unsized bullets with Teflon gasfitters' tape.  Never have leading and can switch to jacketed bullets without fouling problems,

Product PTFE thread seal tape;  Milspec T-27730A  This is not the thin stuff available at DIY stores.  See a gasfitter and schmooze him up.

Disclaimer, I have no data to offer, but 3031 can be used to work up some wicked close range varmint loads with a 35 Remington or any of the other 35's like 358 Win or 35 Whelen with the 125 gr HP's for 38/357.   It can push them to the ragged edge or over.  Kinda like the 22 Hornet bullets in my brothers 220 Swift at around 3500 fps.  Bullets pushed that hard are devastating to say the least.

I have had excellent to outstanding results with 3031 in .223 up to .35 Rem (includes 270, 30-06, 308 and 7.62X54R).  My all time favorite elk powder. ;D
