Here is a newspaper spread with extracts from the day journal of Fort Victoria.  A look back at life on the West Coast eight years before the gold rush began.

Great peek at the past. You can bet that then and after the Gold Rush began, Fort Victoria was an armed camp, with every Tom, Dick and Harry packing iron.
