Dies for 44 Russian?
« on: January 11, 2011, 10:23:52 PM »
Howdy

I want to start loading some 44 Russian. I have a set of Hornady 44Mag/44Sp dies that I use for 44 Sp. Will probably want to buy another set and dedicate them to 44 Russian.

What dies are you using for 44 Russian? In other words, what brand do you use that has the range to load 44 Russian?

Thanks

I have a box of 44 Russian with Starline brass. Looks like they fit into the 44Mag/44Sp shellplate for my Hornady machine.
That’s bad business! How long do you think I’d stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he’d pay me that much to stop robbing him, I’d stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!

Not a whole lot of .44 Russian dies around any more.  I use a set from Lyman.  Part number 7680120.  As you note, the shell plate for the .44 Special/Magnum works since that is the parent case.  The sizer also works.  The problem is whether the seater and crimper will adjust down far enough for the Russian.

I load virtually the same cartridge for my M83 REICHSREVOLVER.  I need to use an RCBS steel sizer to get a tight grip on the bullet.  Lee Carbo dies are straight, and don't seem to neck the .44 Russian brass enough.  The RCBS steel are bored with an almost imperceptable step low enough to do the trick.  I use a LEE thru-the-neck die to inside neck expand and then the seating die to finish the job.  I can even load a roundball with these dies.

I can't speak for any other dies or combinations.  My experience may be unique.

I have a set of Lee dies in .44 Russian caliber that have worked fine for me.  No problems experienced yet.

I also have a set of Lee .44 Russian dies. I use them primarily to load .44 Colt but have loaded some .44 Russian cartridges with them. No problems experienced yet either.

If you have RCBS 44 mag or spl dies you can, with just a little skill, grind some of the bottom of the seating/crimping die off and use them to reload all three. OR just buy a seating/crimping die for 44 Russian. I've converted .30-06 to .308 amoung others. I currently use a .45 acp seating/crimping die for .45 Colt. I learned to reload along ago when die selection for some calibers was tough to find and was short of money too.
