Title: Still More Trivia
Post by: Gripmaker on April 23, 2006, 09:21:13 pm
Who was the first American gun manufacturer to utilize the transfer bar safety system? An extra "Hurrah!" for anyone who can tell me the Model.

A hint: It wasn't Ruger.

Sir, I think it was Colt, the '71 Open-top if I'm not mistaken.

Iver Johnson is my guess - don't know the model ...

Congratulations Jack! Iver Johnson is was and the model was the Safety Hammerless which started production in 1895. I inspected one of these at a local gunshop just last week and was amazed at what I found. The piece seemed to be in good shape except the bolt would not lock up and allowed the cylinder to move at the most inoportune time.  That I am aware of, Colt didn't actually produce a transfer bar system on any of their guns.  HOWEVER, I have been known to have been wrong in the past.

Sorry, I was mistaken. The Colt had a frame mounted firing pin but no transfer bar. I'll stand an extra turn on guard duty, and the first round at the sutlers. Al.
