Title: 45-60 cases from 45-70
Post by: doketx on January 05, 2020, 01:49:08 PM
Gentlemen,
Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I could thin down the base of 45-70 cases to 45-60 thickness?  I have been chucking 45-70 cases in a drill and thinning the base with a file.  While it works, it is a PITA.  I was just wondering if there's a better way outside of hiring a machinist.  Any help anyone can give me would be most appreciated.  Thanks in advance!

If you have a drill press pick up one of the 45-70 lee trimmers. Trim [bench belt sander works] the pilot back so that it will cut the 45-60 length, don?t worry about the pin stop thingy as you?ll use the stop nuts on the drill press. Use a drill press vise to hold the cutter and guide with the vise trued and clamped on the table. Chuck the shell holder into the press jaws and lower the spinning case onto the cutter. While its turning carefully use a file to trim the brass flare that forms on the case edge and a inside chamfer tool. It?s still tedious but thats how I cut my brass down for my 1876 NWMP carbine.

OOPS....I reread the post and you said base. My bad. Have you checked your toggles one at a time? My Cimarron 1876 had a bad [too long] toggle in it. With only the good toggle it would chamber any shortened 45-70 but with only the bad toggle, only the thinnest rims and they were overcamming. My bud came over who knows what hes doing with these toggle link rifles and in a few minutes had it right. We didn?t take very much metal off inside or out.
