We live in Sun City Center, Florida which is around 25 miles due east of the Gulf of Mexico. It looks like Hurricane Dorian will bypass us but we still are prepared just in case.

My wife and I are pleasantly surprised how well we have adjusted the hot and humid weather here. Back in Wisconsin a hot and humid day would drive me crazy.

Morning y'all.
Thanks fer the coffee.

Slim, I have a stick magazine for a Thompson that I have no use for, would you be interested in it?
Sure. PM, me.

Processed some sponges today
What do you use them for?

'Tis 51 and cloudy. High of 74.

Two tame turkeys invaded our domicile, yesterday. Therefore, it sounds like a small scale Ozark Tracker's place.  ::)

Slim- women love them as Luffas like the ones from the ocean. For exfoliation their skin. Artisan soap makers will put slices in Center of bar soaps. Craftsman use them like normal sponges for paintings and other crafts. I use one for cleaning off my hen eggs before boxing them for Farmers Market.
This is the second time we have grown them. We are still learning about them. I was hoping to get a hundred this year, might get 50 before frost. Might be 20 ready in next few days.

Ozark Tracker.... I wonder how they have been- we have 3 Guineas they sound like a hundred turkeys in the morning

Afternoon all.

Ended up not staying in Yellowstone last night. All the campgrounds in a 20 mile radius were full.  So we drove to the park, turned around and drove back. Went over Beartooth pass.

Have you been over the pass, Roo?

On the subject of fowl, my mom has lost 2 chickens in the past month. We hatched them out in the same brood, so we expected them to croak pretty close together.

Drove over the Beartooth pass several times on my Harley. Went over it once in a car in June after it had snowed the night before.

Back online again. Apparently the underground co-ax cable from the satellite is shot. Right now I have the satellite receiver hooked directly to the dish with a 2ft cable formerly used for a VCR, sitting on a stool under the dish in the front yard. Signal from the router's pretty weak, dish is about 50 feet away from where I sit now. I Guess I'll have to venture out today after all, to get some new cable.

We moved our router last week. However we installed YouTube TV. The dish hasn?t been used since. Looks like it will get shutoff. Moving the router improved all of our devices connections.

I'll rustle up some late night Chow for the night crew.

I just got off work, making sure the campus is safe.  The most exciting event tonight was a streaker through the lawn sprinklers. All recorded by her friends and put on some social media no doubt.  I'm not paid enough to worry about that at midnight, so we let it be.

We watched Tombstone again last night. Now I have an itch to shoot some black powder. Unfortunately, that itch will remain unscratched for quite a while. All I have are a couple of those newfangled autoloaders.

If one of them was a .45 1911, it'd run on a case full of 3-f, although cleanup might take a while.

But a 9, or a .32??? Don't know about that.

If you wanted to try black in a 22, a Hornet might be better, it was originally a BP round.

I think the 223 would actually look like a firework fountain.

If you seriously wanted it to work you'd need a swaged bullet because it's almost impossible to cast anything less than lino in a 22 mould.

17.9 gallons of gas for 4.9 cents per gallon, last time the pickup was filled was July 1st in Sargent Nebraska, 199.8 miles from home.

Get points at Russ's Market off gas, insurance pays  a lot of it for Rx's, wife hates riding in my pickup, so it sits.  Ain't been drove for almost 3 weeks, I start it and let it run a bit about once a week.

Don't ask how much gets run through hers.  She fills at Hillis 66 and Jeff and the boys was her windows, check the oil, put the gas in, check the tires and fix flats and more.

It's worth the extra 2-3 cents a gallon not to deal with the dang thing.  DJ and I were using it one day and we opened the hood, and decided there was nothing under it we recognized, so we shut it.

I'm here, didn't check in this morning, got up at 5, loaded 3 dutch ovens a tub of great and some tools.  Was on the road by 6:30, arrived in Tablerock Nebraska at about 8, met Mustang Greg who had wood and supplies.  By 9:15 had a 16 inch oven of small golf ball size biscuits done, put on another one and from then till about 3 I was surrounded by 4th graders in separate herds every half hour, they llove the biscuits.

Talked a bit, loaded gear, put out fires, got a check for $100 for services rendered and got home about  an hour ago.

so I will not need to see the inside of another Walmart ?. perhaps ever  :-\

The Wal Mart CEO made the announcement earlier this week, that once existing stocks were gone, they would stop selling handgun and .223/5.56 ammo. Basically, what that meant in my local Wal Mart is the existing stocks were gone the next day. Except for the .22 ammo, which they have a lot of, the shelves look like they did during the Obama Ammo Drought. Only reason I bought there was 9mm was so cheap that reloading them didn't make sense, components cost almost as much as what they were selling loaded ammo for. I'd like to see Wally World get the Dick's treatment, but here in small town America, it's not easy. Dicks I can avoid, but when Wal Mart comes to the small town, Mom and Pop get put out of business and have to go to work as Wal Mart greeters. There are still grocery alternatives, but for al lot of the non grocery stuff we get there, it means a trip to a larger town

Yes Sir and that is what made Wally & his Hires Billionaires, move in set up and ruined Mom & Pop , and then untimely  Sears Kmart and Penney's

The big Achilles heel though was Jeff Bezos and his AMAZON.COM the Internet & free shipping.

Between "ol Sam"  then the Walton kids and Bezos , Sears & Kmart stood no chance

We still have Bass Pro/ Cabela's & Academy Sports, I got  50r boxes CCI Blazer 9MM brass case 115 grain on sale at both for $14.97
and 100r Winchester 9MM 115 grain brass case @ $27.99

Herters which is Bass Pro house brand it seems  :-\ is US made Brass Cased  was also on sale ( 45 ACP )

As I see it, Wally World is a acme of Corporate Evil and Monopoly.

As Major pointed out, they move in and wipe out the local mom and pop competition.

Once they have that monopoly, they expand into food and pharmacy.

Once there, they switch to the cheapest chinese crap they can import under the slogan
?Always the lowest price? . It doesnt matter that a pair of sneakers ( that used to last 2 or 3 seasons) blow apart after a month.

Then they  go after the manufacturers to get them to make their stuff offshore - again , cheapest possible. Once the makers outsourced all the factory work and laid off the labor and shut down the plant, the idiots are now locked into the Wally World chinese factory, theres no going back.
At that point the chinese substitute plastic gears for metal, wire for steel rod, and throw out any QA.

I literally saw this happen to the best kitchen stand mixer ever made, Kitchenaide.
We have one , all american made, quality metal throughout. Been running for 20 years. Its the only thing strong enough to mix thick cookie and bread dough.  Walmart convinced the Kitchenaid Execs they would make a fortune selling thru Walmart, 5en the above started. Now Kitcheanide mixers are a piece of crap, constantly breaking. And you have lost the choice of buying anything of quality, cuz the competition has gone under.

Then theres INSTANTPOT. They got smart and have 2lines one for wally world that is about 15% cheaper and one for all over stores. If you buy thru a dept store or target, you pay more, but ALL of the wally world versions have recalls, infant mortality, or die after a few months.

A study I read for a brand of headphones, skullcandy?  They did the wally world thing, the owner was on the plane to china every month trying to fix the latest qa problem and was unable to get changes
Fixes or improvements thru in less than 6-8 months. He was losing market share cuz the kidsget the word out instantly - skullcandy used to rock but now it sucks, man !

He said screw it, found a local shop in florida about 2 blocks away that was hungry  for work, switched m and dumped wallyworld. Hes back to making money, getting his customer base back, and employing americans. He is not selling as many as wallyworld could, but he is making more cuz walyworld was shaving his profit razor thin!

Best part - if you employ americans, they have money to buy your products. That?s something the Evil Corp Execs dont get.

So, if wallyworld drops pistol ammo, suddenly the giant elephant sucking the ammo up is gone, and there will be more for real gunstores and lgs, and real shooters, and maybe kill off The GREY MARKET SCALPERS.

And while i am ranting, whats with these moron kids that go out with a semiauto and a case of cartridges and all they do is spray the hill and make noise and dont even have a target let alone care if they hit the target?  If they wanted noise firecrackers are cheaper.

Oh, and thanks for the coffeee, i need more!

Yhs
Prof (on a rant) Mumbles

I don?t buy much as far as sporting goods from WM the past 8 or 9 years. Occasionally sone shot shells. academy and Bass Pro. A few local owned places have better selections and most times prices.

Now to really hurt these big  stores, why are they still allowed to sell Alcohol and Tobacco. ATF needs to pressure them, afterall they kill more everyday than Bullets.

I know my opinion might not be popular, but if I owned Walmart I'd of got rid or arms and ammo a long time ago, slowly and quietly.

They form such a small part of the business that between having a hard time finding employees you can trust to sell it and the fact so many people seem to hate them, sooner or later something will happen that is not their fault and a Liberal judge with a Liberal jury will stick it to them in a lawsuit.

As for taking over and ruining mom and pop businesses, their customers did it to the local business, Walmart was following smart business practices, the customers who wanted it all one place and cheaper screwed their friends and neighbors who owned local businesses.

And now they are buying on line from places that don't even have employees in the  local economy.

I buy some at Walmart, often stuff I can't get other places, but the majority of what I buy comes from local owned business.

Thankee for the coffee....has cooled off since the two 100+ scorchers after the 'cane

"SHE"  will use Publix 60%  Winn Dixie 20% for Food stuffs   and she does use Walmart ( Super &/or Neighborhood ) for soaps  cleaners etc. the other 20%

I do go to Publix and on rare occasion Ive been in WD but not maybe in the past 12 months or more course my Mom & Pop  Barber is in the the same shop center.

Aside for Fridays foray specifically to grab the 9MM deal ( which turned out "not" as it was steel cased ) I by-passed any and all other offerings and only wasted some of my time and none of my money.

I avoid going " shopping " when and if I can ?
I'm guilty of using the internet. I used Amazon ...I have a Business account with many product options reviews and  free shipping.
and I don't have to deal with the parking and mass patronage of Wallys world emporium

I see everyone?s favorite college team won or lost as in Del?s case yesterday. Gonna refill Hummingbird feeder and feed chickens and goats then stay in A/C . Got a pile of green beans to freeze up. I will work in that.

A great many Family run Dry Goods- Mom & Pop Hardware  if you will would have "section" or area counter with the Sears and Roebuck or Monkey Ward catalog
and received the parcels as well as their own stock...They co-existed to about the mid teens or 1920's

Evening Y'all, been busy these last couple of weeks getting things ready for the autumn clean up and this week getting ready for our SASS State championship,Heluva Rukus. I shot a match last Sunday as a tune up and was happy with my times for the most part.I found a problem with one of my new to me Bisley Vaquero's that was fixed as soon as I got home. The previous owner installed the hand springs in backwards and when it got dirty it was jamming up the cylinder hand and not rotating the cylinder. I did manage to shoot a clean match despite the problem and will try to replicate that the Rukus. Y'all be good and stay safe,I'll give a report when I get back once I've recuperated from the match.

Currently 55 and sunny in Billings. Rained all day yesterday, but supposed to stay sunny through the weekend now.

Have classes in the morning, then this afternoon I'm just going to relax and take a nap. Sleep hasn't been in my vocabulary past week.

Del, when my dog would get antsy but I didn't want to walk her, we would drive around the block. That would satisfy her for a while.

Right now in Sun City Center, Florida the temp is 92 degrees with a heat index of 100. Tomorrow morning the low in Burlington, Wisconsin will be 49 degrees. Quite a difference!

My wife and I have adjusted to Florida's hot and humid weather surprisingly well. We  go to the pool early each morning. The weather is gorgeous for a few hours with temps around 75 to 78. When we go go out later in the day it's hot, but we know we have nice weather to look forward to in the morning.

However I'll take it we do nut need a Tropical storm

Cleaning the 1893 Marlin which I shot yesterday working on a load. Someone cleaned it from the muzzle with a metal rod for over 100 years. So, the crown is not good. It shoots smokeless jacketed bullets fine, but not cast smokeless or black powder.  :(

Good to melt lard or butter, make a roux in it to have handy when making different sauces.

Can pour bacon drippings in it for later.

Would be good for 1 person if I decide to go hide for a few days.

Is 3/4 quart, 5 inch, Gopher Grease  got one too.  Been 13 years and one month since we cooked together.  He is planning on making it to the Muster to shoot and help me.

Feel like Jake and Elwood putting the band back together.😳

Afternoon all.

Billings is getting towards fall. Yesterday topped out at 55. Today we're expecting 65, but it's noon already and barely 50.

Busy week for me. Last weekend, we went and camped in Bozeman. Monday i worked until 1am, and Tuesday I went with a friend to Missoula for a concert,v then didn't get back to Billings until 6am. Then I had class at 8am, and work again that night.  It's been a long week.  ::)

One less fun thing I learned is that a friend of mine back home was killed in a motorcycle accident last week.  He was a firefighter for CALFire, and he and his wife had just got a new house and were ready to start a family.   So that's been hard to get past this last week.

Went to a CAS/Zoot shoot at Ripon. Had a good time shooting tommy guns, 1911A1's, and a 1917 S&W.
Micah shot CAS. He broke the transfer bar on his Pietta SAA. Then he shot a S&W pre-model 10 (M&P). He also shot a tommy gun on the last stage instead of the fish gun. So he shot CAS and  Zoot.

Afterwards, we went to Walmart to get stared at.  ;D

Afternoon all.

Currently 55, with a few little fluffy clouds. Starbucks is already advertising pumpkin spice everything. One of the local (ish) breweries is advertising a pumpkin (not pumpkin spice) ale, which sounds mildly intriguing. I may have to track some down.

In today's itinerary, I have reading homework, drinking Black Rifle Coffee, and that's about it.

FIRE ALERT ISSUED FOR ALABAMA: The Alabama Forestry Commission has upgraded the recent Fire Danger Advisory to a statewide Fire Alert effective immediately. While under a Fire Alert, permits for outdoor burning will be restricted and issued on an individual basis at the discretion of the State Forester. This burning restriction is being issued because of the current drought situation, continued lack of precipitation, and high probability of fuel ignition. With this extremely dry weather, conditions are such that any fire can quickly spread

I have a pile of brush to burn off- continue waiting now

Yup , the weather has gone wacky ( scientifical term)

There are STILL tropical storms in the Gulf and the Pacific off the Baja. It looks like the Great Southwest may get classic El Nino
weather this winter ( ie huge snow dumps) even tho the classic conditions are not quite there for it.

SE Asia, Japan and Korea are getting hit with a record number of typhoons. Japan is experiencing the worst flooding and mudslides
since the March 2011 Tsunami.

Looks like mebbe corn and bean futures and going to be crazy. Also pork, since Japan and China are losing their
pigs to swine fever and since China lost HALF their pigs nationwide China is tapping it's "national reserves" .
I did not know that some countries maintain "strategic reserves" of food!
It actually seems like a smart thing to do.

Oh look, Korea has swine fever now too. I wonder how it spreads?

"The virus is then easily spread between pigs by direct contact with an infected animal, its body fluids (nasal, oral, feces, blood) or tissues (meat), or indirectly from contact with contaminated objects (fomites), such as vehicles, equipment, footwear or clothing."

"Classical swine fever or hog cholera (also sometimes called pig plague based on the German word Schweinepest)
Clinical signs
Swine fever causes fever, skin lesions, convulsions, and usually (particularly in young animals) death within 15 days.
The signs are indistinguishable from those of African swine fever.
Immunization
A small fraction of the infected pigs may survive and are rendered immune. Artificial immunization procedures were first
      developed by Marion Dorset."

The Merck manual has lotsa info!
       https://www.merckvetmanual.com/generalized-conditions/classical-swine-fever/overview-of-classical-swine-fever (https://www.merckvetmanual.com/generalized-conditions/classical-swine-fever/overview-of-classical-swine-fever)
" Classical swine fever is a contagious, often fatal, disease of pigs clinically characterized by high body temperature, lethargy, yellowish diarrhea, vomiting, and a purple skin discoloration of the ears, lower abdomen, and legs. It was first described in the early 19th century in the USA. Later, a condition in Europe termed ?swine fever? was recognized to be the same disease. Both names continue to be used, although in most of the world the disease is now called classical swine fever (CSF) to distinguish it from African swine fever (see African Swine Fever), which is a clinically indistinguishable disease but caused by an unrelated DNA virus."

Japan is going the immunization via vaccine route.

China is just slaughtering and ( hopefully) destroying.

But China has been known to put diseased and rotting meat and fish into the marketplace and often tries to sell it on the
international market. The inspectors at the Ports regularly reject entire shipments of diseased/rotting meat and fish from China.

As i recall this was the downfall of Tom Horn, only it whiskey, not wine, that did him in.

A detective got him drunk and talking one night, with a stenographer listening thru a wall talking notes when he admitted to shooting a young boy, thinking (because he was wearing his father coat) he wa shoot the boys father.

I'm not sure if this is fact, or Hollywest.

It also may be an illegal walltap.

Well, here it is 0002 hrs on Monday, the thirtieth day of September in the year of our Lord, 2019. Good morning Gents, and any Ladies that may be about. I am most happy to see that you all are apparently doing well.   Yes, I am still picking daisies, rather than pushing them up, but some days are questionable. My old, worn out bod is on strike, but my mind is still mostly all here. I suppose I have no reason for not hanging out here as much as I used to since the company is rather congenial, and I'm spend so much of my time here in this ol' chair - or the other one, or the flat one, between doctor's appointments; just been lazy, I suppose.

Had us a warm summer here in Sin City and environs, but it appears that Fall is falling; heard the returning flocks of geeses, for the first time this year, the other day, and they have been showing up, at least a couple each day for the last few days. They will winter in the ponds and lakes of the local golf courses and "lake" communities, and at Lake Mead, and the other Colorado River environments, then be off again next Spring.  There are three "lake golf course communities" within a mile of us in three directions, and a few wetlands preserve projects that have relatively large bodies of water with wetlands flora that are conducive to the geese. It is a pleasure to have them as neighbors for the season. We also turned off the A/C the other day, for the first time since late April, and opened the house up to the outside breezes.

Del, I was so sorry to read of the "crossing" of your Rowdy; that is a hard thing to go through. But,it seems that the new pup is making his own place in your lives, and I am certain that he has a welcoming and loving family in your home.

I chuckled a the pigs and pork stuff. Butchering is not an easy thing to do, done my share, large and small.  I used to buy a half of a beef, and a whole hog once in a while, and have them broken down and packed by a local Butcher. He said that if I ran the power company, he would barter with me for them, because he though that climbing wood poles and steel towers, and messing around with thousands of volts was harder than what he did; I concurred, only in the opposite direction.

Well, it is almost 0130 hrs, and I am yawning, so I m going to wander off to the hay loft. I'll be around - until I'm not.

Later.
