Title: Wiping Fluid
Post by: Yellowhouse Sam on August 17, 2019, 04:05:01 PM
Use NAPA cutting oil cut 10:! for fouling control.  Any reason why this concoction don't make an excellent bore cleaner when all is said and done?

I use it 7-1, and it's about all I use until the match is over, then I like to use a good bore solvent like Montana Extreme's cowboy blend to take out all the carbon fouling and any lead that might be in there. Then use their Accuracy Oil to coat the bore before the the gun away.

I do not shoot much/any long range, but I do shoot a lot of BP.  So I have a dumb question..what are you blending with the cutting oil?

This missive has no real content applicable to the OP.  If you choose to ignore .... well OK.  I won't be Offended.  Nope sure won't.

Hoever, as many concoctions as I have run into for shooting BP, I must admit this is the first I have heard of "Wiping Fluid."  Obviously, I need to get out more.  However, I don't actually see where "Cutting Oil" would or even could be more effective than PAM for swabbing out a bore during a match.  Or even just a fun shooting session.  I would simply chamber up a fired case, squirt some PAM down the bore, run a wet patch (PAM again) through then an oily patch with Mobil 1 motor oil.  Eject the case (important .. that) and continue.  Of course, I don't shoot BPCR, so my opinion is rather moot.  Just something to express on a boring Sunday afternoon.

Water dissolves the blackpowder fouling and the oil prevents flash rust.  Of course, a  patch or two is necessary to dry the bore.

Hello My Dear Bored Coffin

briefly:
what Sam and Ranch said.

a longer, less boring discussion:

what you are suggesting is excellent advice for the standard casual BP CAS shooter.

BROW (this subforum) is about Buffalo Rifles of the Old West:  long range shooting matches and about the rifles used in the "old days" to harvest buffalo hides.

and thus BPCR implies amazing and possibley psychotic world of the long-range Black Powder Cartridge Shooters.

How long range? When I was young and frisky and foolish I used to think 300 yards was LR.
Then after some education from some National Guard targe shooters a t work  thought 500 meters was long range.

Then I read in magazines about silohuette silouette shooting steel pigs and turkeys

Then i got some books ( remember them? before the interwebs?) about the 1500 yard matches at wimbledon in the 1870's.

I CAN"T EVEN SEE THAT FAR!!!!

and I am reading about  the insanely long shooting the BPCR guys are doing now out to 2000 plus yards

then I saw this:
http://blog.davide-pedersoli.com/2000-m-shot-with-a-pedersoli-gibbs-45-long-range-target-rifle/

that's a .45 cal muzzleloader  using an elongated cylinderical bullet, so it's about the same as a .45-90 or .45-100 or .45-110 ....
but it's still a muzzle-loader.

Sooooo

these guys ARE different
They learn how to read the wind at different spots down the range.
They learn about vortex, cortex, spindrift, corrialis, coelll coriolis effect.
They take into account temperature, humidty, altitude, time of year...
I think some of them take into account the position of the moon for gravitational and tidal effect.

They use fouling shots, blow-tubes, wipe between shots, weigh each bullet, weigh each cartridge case, and more stuff I don't even care to know

it's a different crazy world. I fully expect them to do "different stuff" prior to shooting, during shooting,  before cleaning , after cleaning, and probably
after they get home before putting away.  I would not be surprised if someone plugged his bore at both ends and fiulled it with magic
rifle pixie oil before putting it away!

So...
here's some discussion for those of us who are bored....

Ranch and Yellowhouse thank you for the information.  Several years ago I purchased a Shiloh in 50-70, shortly after that I started having shoulder issues and cannot shoot it any more.  Coffin and Professor I always enjoy your contributions.

My good Preffesser   :)

Actually, I well understand (no I don't) the mascinations the afficanadoes of Long Range BPCR go thru.  There was a time many Lustrum ago when I foolishly dabbled in "Bench Rest Rifle."  When first started, the endeavor seems quite innocuous.  How hard can it be to punch holes real close together at ridiculous distances.  Of course one needed an Optical sight better suited to inspecting the interior of Craters onna Moon.  Eventually one winds up wid a rifle weighing in at about 40 pounds and enough range equipment to require a '60s Buick Wagon to tote it all to the range.  Then there were magic bullets.  Incantations to utter at case prep.  Breathing techniques required for pulling the handle on the single stage mobile mount extra heavy duty field loading press.  Specially selected and sorted cartridge cases submitted for sprinkling with Holy Water and the ubiquitous portable weather station.

Then it came to pass ..... the idea became .... to put ALL of one's magic bullets thru the same hole.  Then I needed a new and different 45 pound rifle of a larger caliber.  Start all over again??  NO    I.   GAVE.   UP!!!

Ohhh Coffin

You were that guy with the monster rifle no one could lift,
Relaoding the same case over and over
And cussing because those bullits were not going into the same hole on that many hundred meter away target

I Am sorry I did not recognize you.

My confession...I shoot BPCR, and love it!  My current favourite is a Shiloh 1874 Sharps in 45-70.  It loves 86.4 gr. Swiss 1 1/2 Fg and a BACo 443530E paper patched bullet weighing 526 gr. in 16:1 alloy.  With that much powder in the case, there is no room for a grease cookie, so I wipe (wiping fluid) between shots using bore pigs soaked in CUTTING OIL AND WATER, and a dry patch to prepare the chamber and make sure the bore is dry.
There are lots of WIPING FLUIDS but cutting oil and water is a good one.  I also use the same fluid as a patch lube for my muzzleloading flint rifles, shotguns and pistols.

Any compression?

I'm getting there, but as of yet I haven't needed "Compression" sox   ::) ;D

I guess wiping fluid being a surprise term to someone strikes a bit odd.. I've been shooting blackpowder in cartridge guns and muzzle loaders for a couple of lustrom's or more, and have always heard the term wiping fluid used for the concoction one used for wiping the bore between shots, between magazine full etc.
This Napa Oil and water mix is a homemade solution, quite similar to the stuff Birchwood Casey and others sold back in the 70's and while it may lack an ingredient or two of Hoppes #9 plus, it works just as well if not better and is a whole bunch cheaper.

YS:   compression?  With the .053" card wad on the powder, the case is full.  I compress .070" or so.  Just enough room to seat a patched bullet.   .001" neck tension holds the bullet securely.
