Title: To Make an "Authentic Sling" for a Henry...
Post by: mtmarfield on June 12, 2019, 04:47:52 PM
      Greetings, All!

I've been awful lonely since I sold my Henry, and I've decided to budget for another one,
and identical to the last: 'Civil War' Model, with sling attachments, cleaning rod trap in the
buttstock, .44WCF.
I have also decided that, since I'm wetting my feet in leatherworking, I will make my own
sling; I have the metallic accoutrements, but I do NOT have the leather measurements...
Could anyone kindly provide the OAL dimensions for their sling, including all overlaps, etc?
I would be much obliged, and willing to photo the results!

              Thanks Mucho!

From tip to tip including foldovers mine is 50" long by 1" wide.  Hope this helps.

Can you provide a sour4ce for the hardware for the sling, and perhaps a picture or two of the sling and parts?

Folks, my images exceed the 1600KB maximum, and I have NO idea
how to reduce them on my Mac... HELP!

      Greetings!

Well, I'll put it in writing for everyone!...

S&S supplied the "Winchester-Type" Sling Hook; although the original Henry Sling Hooks
appear to be bronze, I could not find one, and opted for steel.
   Buckleguy.com supplied the hard-to-find, '1" Solid Brass Double Loop' Buckle, Part #B7102;
they also supplied a '3/4" Natural Brass O-Ring', Part #OR012, which I attached to the Sling
Swivel Attachment. I noticed that many Henrys had an Iron Ring looped through the Attachment
on the Barrel, and being that I wanted to minimize steel to steel galling, I opted for a Brass Ring.
I also chose from Tandy Leather a rather thick piece of 1" wide leather ( $! ) for the Sling, as well
as the '1/4" Screw-Posts' Part #1290-01 for securing the doubled over leather at the Sling Hook
end.
Although I saved perhaps $10 from the price of the cheapest "Henry Sling" that I could find on
the internet, I did enjoy the process, and count this as my "first real" leather working project. If
someone can aid and assist in my successful downloading of the photos, I'll gladly do so.

Were the post screws used on original slings? I would have thought in those days it would have been copper rivets as was used on many other leather items.

      Greetings, CF!

They may very well have been, or a "collar-button"; the Post-Screws are a great way
to allow quick installation and removal, and they're very secure.

I made my Henry sling by using an rcmp cross strap that has a "collar button" closure one one end and a conventional strap buckle on the other. I found a suitable brass 's' hook in my stash of odd parts and - Voila! - authentic looking Henry sling.

I no longer use it on the rifle as it got in the way a couple of times during a match. Great way to carry the rifle in the field.

      Greetings, PJH!

Bravo on your finding the Brass Hook; I had absolutely no luck! The Henry Sling is
a bit awkward for everything but carrying; the placement of the rear swivel makes
utilising it for a shooting brace almost impossible.

The brass hook I used has a hook at one end and the other a tight loop that all but disappears in the fold of the leather.

Couldn't be better if I made it myself ....  ;D
