Title: Kepi’s?
Post by: Baltimore Ed on January 31, 2019, 02:56:50 PM
What do I have here? Real or repro? I don’t know anything about them other than the guy with all those large caliber molds had them.

Ima guessin' mind you, but the peak doesn't appear to be leather and, I thought that the originals were leather. Plus, it also appears that the peak is two pieces sewn together and the top side is shiny.  My guess would be that they are not original, but then again, I have never seen an original.  I have two copies of a kepi, one with a leather peak and on the other one, the peak looks like the one in Ed's photos.  The one with the sewn peak, I bought at Gettysburg 8 1/2 lustrum ago.

I only have one Kepi which is an original and it is post CW and doesn't look like either of those.  all of my others are reproduction fatigue caps so I can't compare them with yours.

Pretty sure what you have there is Film or theatrical costume stock ....I've seen the clear ID insert sewn into many http://westerncostume.com/ rental wardrobe....
I used to use them for my rental outlet.

Repros…

As Civil War reenactor get too fat and too old to reenact, their used, sweat-stained, scruffy gear winds up for sale, and it'll look good.

It's not going to be the first time you run across stuff like this.

Scouts Out!
