Title: What Kind of Holster for a Uberti Flat Top...?
Post by: Cholla Hill Tirador on September 25, 2018, 11:37:53 PM
I'm wanting to have a holster made for my Uberti Flat Top, but don't know where to begin. The front sights are taller than a normal Colt-style SA and adjustable, so a fella wouldn't just want to cram them in a holster where there might be pressure on top of the front sight. Also, would it be best to leave a cut out for the rear sight? Thanks for any help and advice.

Any kind of holster should work,  but it would have to be made with extra room in the toe area to accommodate the tall site.

Any holster, modern or "old west" style that is patterned for a Colt SA New Frontier should work with minor modification to the pattern.

Need to take some measurements around the front and rear sights, but I'd bet a holster for a Ruger Blackhawk/Super BH should fit.

I appreciate the replies so far.

It's not so.much the fit as the fact that the front sight pivots up and down and is held in place only by a small set screw. I was wondering if it was possible to make a holster with a sort of pinch or trough the length of the holster that would protect th front sight.

no problem at all. A lot of modern holsters have a sight tunnel molded into them.  What you have there wouldn't take much if any modification for most holsters beyond molding that tunnel when the holster is slightly damp.  I would probably remove the insert for the front sight and secure a 3/16-1/4 inch dowel to the top of the gun along the top of the sights when forming the holster to the gun.  May even just use the dowel for the front 1-2 inches of the holster.  Once you have drawn that far the interference of the sights would no longer be an issue as the rest of the gun is no longer being held in place, and the draw should be clear.

I normally do form the holster to accomplish this, and also include instructions for the customer to improve that, if they feel it necessary. [NOT a solicitation for business, just a statement of fact.]

I use the same pattern for those as the old Ruger flattops. They actually have a little more room than necessary.

Greetings ....

I thought I would wait for the gents who actually know what they are doing to post first before I ramble on aimlessly...

I thought I had seen commercial rigs with sight tunnels as JRice mentioned...
here is one,  from Bianchi trademarked as "sight channel"
"Model 1810H Clearwaterâ„¢ Cowboy Holster"

If I were to try building one for a flat top like yours, I think I would try to build a three-layer extra thick grooved gusset for the sight to ride in...

but I have no idea if it wouldmake drawing smoother than a formed channel or hang up even worse...

good luck and let us know what you go with !

I actually did something similar one time. Instead of folding the leather for the main pouch, I made it from two pieces with a stitch line up both sides. The top strap side had a three layer welt with the center piece narrower to make the channel for the sight. It wasn't all that great looking but it worked like a charm.

By golly, I believe that Bianchi, or a reasonable fascimile thereof, will work perfectly! Thanks!

That Ruger holster is almost exactly like the one I made. Interesting to see one like it.
