We are going to TX, NM, AZ, UT for 6 weeks next month. I started reading “Westerns” to get in the mood. I love Larry McMurtry and Zane Gray. I decided to branch out and read Texas John Slaughter by William W. Johnson. What a piece of s&*t. I had to keep checking to see if I was reading “The Perils of Pauline” or a Greek Deus ex machina drama. I can see how he wrote 973 books. It would be quick and easy to knock this type of dribble out. <I give myself 4/10 for my rant>
Please suggest some Western authors that write quality books (like McMurtry).

I'm a big fan of Elmer Kelton. He knew Texas and horses.

Lewis B Patten is one of my favorites as is Ed Gorman. Johnny D. Boggs is very good, he's contemporary and makes a concerted effort to get his history correct. He's also a friend so I didn't want to mention him first. ;)
I refer you to the Fantastic Fiction web site, https://www.fantasticfiction.com/b/
There you'll find almost every author of every genre.

But his best work, to me, although a Western, by location, was set in the 1950s.
"The time it never rained".

There's always "Legends" by Forty Rod.
Set in eastern Colrado ca 1885. 1895.

Louis L'Amour is the best western writer of all times..

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm off to Amazon.com :)

If your local library has a "friends" chapter, check out a used book sale. Or get one on interlibrary loan to see if you like the author before investing in a series. Used book stores are also a great place to look, also.

Jeremiah, your probably home by now, but here are a couple of suggestions. The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt. Unusual and well written. But you have to read Butchers Crossing by John Edward Williams. I just wanted this book to go on and on. It is about the last days of buffalo hunting and the men involved. Insightful and creates a world long gone.

...The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt. Unusual and well written...
Fantastic book! While they aren't authentic, I am also a fan of Robert B. Parker's 'Appaloosa' series. But only the ones he wrote. The ones written after he passed don't hold up, in my mind.

Just remembered another. Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. You won't forget it quickly.

I really appreciate Ed Gorman, one of the best IMO ::)
