Title: 1st Nebraska Volunteers
Post by: Quick Fire on July 09, 2017, 07:44:11 PM
Does anyone know if the 1st Nebraska Volunteers had a special hat badge or any other special identifying badge during the SpanAm War?

Good question, the late Jim Potter would have known.  His book on the Nebraska Volunteers during the Civil War, is a very good read.

Wonder if someone at the NG Museum in Seward would know.

There's some pretty good stuff available online from the Nebraska Historical Society.  Google "The Fighting First Nebraska" and it should get you to some of it.

Their Officers had a distinctive collar device that was worn on their Dress coat..

Other than that, the men wore the standard crossed rifles and had either a letter/numeral attached as one piece, or the letter/numeral separately affixed - and that was worn on the campaign hat.

I have a 'lot' of 1st Nebraska stuff - more than the above-mentioned museums - so just ask.

St. George, Could you post a picture of that device?  I'd love to see it!

Regrettably - no.

I don't have the ability to post photos - nor the interest.

Photos I've come across aren't very definitive.  Some with crossed rifles with Reg. number and Co. letter on the front of the field hat, some on the side,  some with the VIII Corps pin ("figure 8") only on the front ... and MOST with no insignia at all.

After their return to the States, most State chapters of the GAR presented the members with commemorative badges/medals.
