Title: 5744
Post by: King Medallion on June 29, 2015, 05:30:45 PM
So I shot a box loaded with this powder last week, 2nd time out with it. Accuracy is very good, (haven't really had anything in this rifle that isn't accurate) but.... seems like there is always a lot of unburnt powder. Is this normal for this powder?

I shoot 5744 a lot in my 1873 and 1876 both Uberti. At first I had a lot of unburned powder as well. Then I started using Puff-Lon filler to the top of the case then compressing the powder while seating the bullet. This holds the 5744 at the base of the case and reduces the volume for combustion thus raising the pressure a enough to get full combustion. I have had no unburned powder grains since using Puff-Lon in my 1873 and 1876 rifles. Puff-Lon is not like putting a card wad on the powder that could cause a ring in the chamber. Puff-Lon fills all the empty space between the powder and the bullet and since it is a compressible material will not ring a chamber. There is a lot of negative talk about fillers on these forums but I think Puff-Lon is the safest filler to use. I am no way connected to the makers of Puff-Lon this is just my experience with years of use. I wish you the best in getting your 1876 shooting to perfection.

I have no expereince with this Puf-Lon stuff and would not even know where to get it but in my situation, I use the kapok out of an old life preserver vest for my filler.  I get the same results that you mention.  The amount that is used is n the amount  for the cartridge that is being loaded and can vary in weight fro 0.1 grain to 0.4 grains.

Interesting idea.  Are these office depot peanuts clearly marked "made from cornstarch"?  I wouldn't want to buy the wrong ones.

Greetings All,

I too am a user of Puff-Lon in the 45-75WCF in combination with the 5744 powder.  The level of unburned powder in my Uberti 1876 using this load is very little, and for this reason I continue to use the product.  Now I worked up the load from scratch with Puff-Lon in ALL levels of development so it has always been part of the load testing.  I have read recently of some folks having problems using filer with 5744, or so it was reported.  The details weren't complete but it got me to thinking.  I went to the makers page for 5744 and did a little reading.  They mention Puff-Lon by name in some of their tests.  Not content with that , I emailed the good folks in their technical dept and asked if they saw any problems using Puff-Lon with 5744.  I was expecting a good scolding for using a filler or at the very least be told I had committed sin of a terrible level, but nope not what I got back.   I hesitate to share the exact wording as I wasn't given permission to share private correspondence but lets just say they didn't seem to have any problems with what load I am using or how I created it.  My humble $.02 worth is that in reloading you take responsibility for your own work and with any discussion of reloading using what is shared is at your own risk, bottom line is just be careful and follow the directions it comes with.  For myself I am pleased with the combination of the 5744 and Puff-Lon.  Buffalo Arms is one source of the product and you can order it direct from the Puff-Lon site.  Best of luck with the rifle and finding a load it likes.

PB

I read somewhere that laundry lint works great too. Been saving my lint from every load  for a while now. Lint from a load of towels seem to be the most consistent.

Shot a box more of 5744 with lint filler. No sign of it after shooting. I will say for laundry lint, if you have pets in the house, it's a pain. We have cats, and cat hair gets everywhere. I saved a bunch of lint from various loads of laundry and towel lint is the cleanest, no cat hair. just a pinch is all thats needed.

Greyhawk, I agree Holy Black is the best case filler. Most of the loadings for all my BP era guns ( which is all of them ) are with the Holy Black. I only use that other grey powder when testing new bullets or alloys. Jubal
