Title: 2013 Department of Missouri Muster
Post by: Pitspitr on September 14, 2012, 10:57:24 AM
Hopefully this is early enough that everybody can put in for time off now and get it.

I will be hosting the 2013 Department of Missouri Muster July 12, 13th & 14th, in my pasture. This will be open to anyone in the GAF. If not currently a member I can help you register. (Membership in the GAF is free and easy) You need not be headquartered in the Department of the Missouri. By using Google Earth and going to  41°40'16.24"N Latitude and  99°19'42.54"W Longitude you can see the Dept. Muster site. Registration forms are available on the dispatches page of the Grand Army's Web site. Particpation will be limited to 35 shooters. Everybody wishing to take part in a door prize drawing  should bring something for the pot and we will run the door prize drawing sort of like an old fashioned blanket shoot. Those wishing to attend but not compete may do so without registration fee, but be sure to pay the meal fee.

This muster will be a primative camping event. The planned activities include: a 3 stage GAF steel target main match, a 300 yd paper target long range match and a GAF Expansion Era Match. While 3 stages for the main match doesn't sound like much these two stages will be of the skirmish format and will feature about 20 knock down targets per stage. Round counts will be dependent on the number of times the shooter needs to shoot at each target to get it to fall. 100 rounds at least would be a good plan. This is a match that, as one participant said, truly needs to be experienced to be fully appreciated.

I will have a tent city and have tentage for about 10 individuals if you don't have your own. We should be easily able to get photos without anything modern in them. We should have plenty of time to sit around the campfire and visit.

The muster itself will be low budget. The meals will be cooked by Delmonico and participants will pay him not me. I don't intend to issue medals to the winners, but entry fees will only be around $35.

Shooters will be able to sight in their rifles on Friday evening using a bench. When the actual long range match is held on Saturday it will be shot from the shooters choice of positions from the ground. The idea behind this is that it will be more of a real world type of match.

And from the feedback I've gotten, beef and noodles will be on the menu Friday or Saturday at noon, plus of the weather coperates on my end, the red flannel hash will be on the menu for breakfast one of those days.  Any other ideas from anyone, I'm always open to feedback, although sales at the store and season always is taken into account. ;)

I thought of that one already, it's been a while.  Have to call it tamater steak, the term Swiss was invented in the 1930's, but it's always a good one.

Sonds good to me-maybe I'm a legionare origionally from Switzerland.

Or could be from Germany, except, in spite of my ancestory on my mom's side, I never developed a liking for saurkraut!

Maybe from the German speaking section of Switzerland???

All Lutefisk has to be eaten down along the canal, I never understood why they soaked perfectly good fish in lye.

Same reason they soak perfectly good corn in lye...??  ::)

Now there is a reason for that, it makes the Niacin (Vitaman B3) in the corn usable by humans, hence preventing Pellagra a disease that was common in years past in the southern United States.  It causes the 4 D's, diarrhea, dermatitis, dementia and death.  Hominy, grits and masa foods such as corn tortillas prevent this terrible disease.  This was discovered by the natives of the Americas long before the white man came here. ;)  Besides, I like hominey, grits and corn tortillas, I don't like lukefisk. :P

I won't, the final plans if it happens won't be finalized till sometime in the early spring.  I am still sitting on the fence on it anyway.  It would involve going east and I get queezy when I get on the other side of the Missouri river and it's a long way east of that.   ;)

We've been building more targets again.  (Five more kneeling targets went to live at the range today!)  We're getting closer to being able to set up three GAF stages without having to reset any targets.  We should be able to set up five stages at a time for our monthly matches.

I've also received the hostage target I ordered and been purchasing supplies to build a "moro warrior" target.

I spoke with Mitch at the Comstock Lodge and he said to tell anyone wishing to stay at the lodge during the Dept. Muster that he will give them a special rate of $85/night

I filled out my registration tonight, in the mail tomorrow. Finally found something that I can cast quickcrete in for mortar shells. I figure line it with cellophane fill with quickcrete & dump water in. Hopefully will be able to pull it out. Pack a little newspaper around it & it should be OK. I will also bring my 50 cal mini Napoleon, & 30 cal mini mortar to play with.

The supply section of the commissary department is a bit behind due to the weather.

I just planted green beans and will be planting more in about a week to 10 days with the goal to have a nice mess of green beans at the muster again.

More important, I just planted 3 40 foot or so rows of beets with the same plan to plant more in a week to 10 days to be able to hit the muster.  The goal of course is red flannel hash again since it went over so well last year.

Also I have a couple of interesting seldom seen today items in jars from last year to bring up and let the troops try out.

Col. Rattlesnake Jack

This evening I read the most recent American Rifleman magazine. In it was an article about the Ross Rifles that the US Army bought from Canada during WWI to use as training rifles. It was subtitled "Better Than a Broomstick". When I read it I couldn't help but to think of you.

How's your grandson doing? Is there any chance you will be able to attend any of the Musters south of the "Medicine Line"?

I'm done with my first event this year, the muster is the next one, do we have any idea a head count yet, close is good enough.  It looks like Salt Crick Rick will be able to make it this year also.  I'm going to do $8 for each meal again, that will cover my groceries and gas which is good enough for me.

If anyone needs my address is:

731 Garfield
Lincoln NE 68502

Phone is 402-432-0339 leave a message and I'll call back, I don't answer for numbers I don't know but will call back if I have a message and number.

Also as always if anyone has any food allergies please let me know, I have one big one and that's why you'll never see a dish made out of moldy cheese.

Keep the fingers crossed for the beets, last year we were lucky anf got the tail end of them, this year it will be close to the other end and I do want to make the red flannel hash again, it seemed well liked.

Can I get a head count for how many were planning on staying under my canvas. The teepee is needing some work and I'm questioning the need to put it up.

With the new targets, and the long range forecast showing the most pleasant weather we've ever had for the DoM Muster, I'm really looking forward to it!

Set it up a little further from the cook fire this year, you look like a bug trying to escape the heat in the morning when I build the fire up.

Yeah but it's nice to show folks how much fun we have and how we don't get all uptight about the little stuff.  I'm bring more Gatorade than last year and hope we don't need it.  I about cleaned the Corner Market out on it last year, got all their green and there wasn't a lot of orange powder left.

BTW do you know if anyone is going to be camping at the motel in Taylor this year?  I had a brilliant idea last year, one the way home. ::)  We should have had Skip grab ice at the corner gas station just south of Taylor when he came in the morning. ;)

Hey Guys
I haven't seen registrations from most of you (even some that I'm pretty sure are attending) Can you please PM me with what rifles you plan to use so that I can make sure I order the appropriate certificates from Dusty Tagalon (Thanks Dusty!)

Oh and I've been looking at the 10 day forecast and it looks to be the most pleasant weather we've ever had for the DoM.

New cover for the cot is in hand so I think I'm good

I also need a rough head count and some money for the groceries if you can.

I'm shooting my Vetterli and Open Top. I only have 76 rounds of Vetterli loaded, so I hope that will see me through. I will just have to "give 'em the cold steel" if I run out

Delmonico, I was going to settle up with you when I got there, but I do understand.
Money on it's way my friend.

I'm also bringing some prizes.

p.s.
I learned my lesson at last year's Muster. I loaded smokeless rounds this time, so I'm not turning my rifle into a smoothbore with BP. Col. Drydock, I'm using a 330gr. with 11gr. of Unique, lrg. pistol primer. Hope this will reach out to some of the distant targets (NOT Long Range) without blowing myself up.

John,
If you want to bring bullets, powder & primers I'll bring my hand press & we can load a few in camp if you need to.

Stu,

I loaded up all the bullets I had. Powder and primer aren't the issue. Need to order some more 330 gr.

GAF is the only venue I shoot the Vetterli, so I should be able to order some more before I'll need to reload again in the Fall.

What worries me most is that I noticed the .41 Swiss sizing/decapper die I'm using subtly scored the side of the cases. I hope they don't start to split on me.

We'll find out.

Be good to see you again, Stu.

I'll be using a Krag and a .45 SAA.  Donnie will use his Mosin and a Nagant Revolver.  Been waiting for Payday (today!) and the check will be in the mail Friday.

On 7/10, I will be in Waukee IA with the Army of the Southwest, participating in a color guard at a drum & bugle corp competition.

Arrive in area on July 11th.

I will be shooting my '84 trapdoor in 45/70 in black (of course!) and a SAA in 45 colt (also in black)

I should arrive sometime late on wednesday if I push hard or more likely Thursday before Noon if I stop in Council Bluffs again to sleep.

Heck G.W., if you're gonna stop to sleep in Council Bluffs, ya might as well cross over the Missouri and I'll put you up Wednesday night and then we can caravan in to Ft. Pitsptr Thursday morning.
What say you?

What is the schedule for the shoot?

We'll shoot the Expansion Era Match Friday morning and the Sharpshooter match Friday afternoon and evening. Saturday we'll shoot the main match. If anybody can't make it in for the Sharpshooter match Friday, we should have time to catch them up on Saturday evening or Sunday morning and we'll use Sunday morning to finish up anything that we didn't get done on Friday or Saturday. Also if anybody is interested in shooting a Zoot match, we can use the GAF target setups and shoot them again with our Zoot guns. If you want to shoot but don't have your own Zoot guns, bring some .45 ACP and I can probably let you use mine. I figure over the course of the weekend we should have plenty of time to shoot the breeze, play show and tell, ect. I know Major Strong asked that I pull out my M-1874 equipment and do a Display like I did last fall at the Grand Muster and describe the various pieces. We'll work that in some evening.

Pitsptr,  It is now official that I won't be able to make the DOM Muster again this year.  I am almost certain that I will need to make a business trip to Lynchburg, VA during that time. This just came about earlier this week. I was anxiously waiting to hear if I could come but this must take precedence. Enjoy the time and all who will, please pray for my wife and I on this endeavor.

Plans have changed, family will be accompanying me on this campaign, so I guess we will be finding someplace to stay in Sargent or thereabouts. No need for tent space. We'll figure out what's happening with meals as we go.

Can't help with the Colonel's cot dilemma, I opened up the two I had out in the shed, and found them to be in similar condition. Guess I'll be buying some canvas before the Grand Muster for repairs.

I'm planning on the cheese steaks and biscuts with some sort of dessert for those in on thursday evening, we'll have it just before sundown, that way we should catch most of the stagglers for that day, also it's something I can whip up extra for someone a bit late.

I'm sure Jerry will have his phone on also but it's perhaps best to have a back-up.

Does anybody who is coming have a video recorder that they could bring to record some of the shooting?

Looks like the roster for the weekend will be River City John, Dusty Tagalon, Ned Neiderlander, Kit Peak Kid, Hopalong Strong, Pony Express, Drydock, Corporal Chauffer, Delmonico and I. If you're planning on attending and I didn't mention your alias PM me.

The Commissary Dept is packed and ready to go as soon as the mess sergeant finishes his cup of coffee.  It travels slows and stops sometimes for breaks but it should arrive at Camp Pitspiter by early afternoon.  If anyone is coming up today we can figger something out for supper, I have to eat anyway.  Same for noon tomorrow.

Cheese steaks for those who need them in the evening.

Got enough beets to do the red flannel hash.  Sat Night is going to be a surprise dish that some non-locals may not reconize although the Central Europe dish goes by several names and it is popular under other names though out the region.

I will get an After Action Report filed soon, but need to get some other things done first. In the mean time I need to report that I found 2 granite cups, 2 WWII-Vietnam era mess kits and a set of similar age US cutlery utensils.

Also attendees voted to move the DoM Muster to the 3rd weekend of June (June 20-22 2014) next year, so mark your calendars.

Thanks to everyone who attended, but especially to Dusty Tagalon for the certificates, Hopalong Strong for video recording the match, Delmonico for the outstanding meals, and Ned Neiderlander for everything he did from help setting up to the traveling trophies. Also special thanks to the Broken Bow Lions Club for sponsoring the insurance.

The cups are in the pickup so unless we drive the van I won't forget to bring them. (now remembering to drop them off might be a different story.

I didn't look for dates but yes they could be WWI also.

Did anybody find the stapler that we used for the long range match? I can't find it.

Arrived home about 8:30 pm, after staying overnight(and most of the day) in KC.

On that last stage, I decided to use the Lebel as a single shot, instead of fully loading it on the clock at least 3 times, it did work out pretty well that way. But as a repeater, even fully loading the mag, Drydock would smoke me on a regular 10 shot stage. What really helped me on that one was, I got by without a pistol reload, which I am really slow at.
