Title: Model 1883 fatigue hat
Post by: big50 on February 09, 2009, 07:34:14 PM
You gentlemen were so helpful with my carbine question I thought I would come back for more help.  In your opinion is the hat that River Junctions sells a fair representation of the original or is there something better out there?

Again I welcome all your thoughts questions and or comments.

Id look at this web page as a reference for how the hat should look and then start looking at the current hat makers.  (Stetson, etc.)  Other than that...I know that some have had less than optimal experiences with Dirty Billy's and it appears that the F. Burgess folks website is no longer up like it used to be.  But for custom hats, these would be where I'd start looking.

F. Burgess & Co.
200 Pine Place
Red Bank, New Jersey, 07701

or

Dirty Billy's Hats

Hope this helps...Good Luck!

That hats that River Junction sell are nearly all first quality.  The owner is often called "Many Hats" and has done an incredible amount of research on western hats.

Top Kick Ken,
I had not thought about F. Burgess, I have some of his stuff from when I first started doing a Dragoon impression 30 years ago.  I gave him a call and spoke with his wife.  Mr. Burgess has retired due to medical/health issues and they are no longer in business.  But I really appreciate your input.  I have about a hat from Dirty Billy and two from Clearwater and I think both of those sutlers are first rate as well.  I just did not see a 1883 in their lists.

Doctor Bob,
I done a lot of business with Jim over the years and have always been pleased.  He is a very sharp trader though!!!LOL  I just was not sure if his hat was a good example of the 1883.

Again Thank all of ya'll for the input, advice and assistance.
Your humble servant

I won't clutter more bandwidth about Dirty Billy's, but anyone wishing to order from them, PLEASE do yourself a favor and PM me directly before you waste your time and money (and lot of each will be wasted if you order, trust me)

My experiences with Dirty Bill's Hats have been uniformly excellent.

THAT OUTFIT IS THE MAJOR SUPPLIER TO THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS MUSEUM. THEIR QUALITY IS SUPERB, THEIR SERVICE IS INCREDIBLY GOOD AND THEY ARE VERY PLEASENT AND QUITE EASY WITH WHOM TO DO BUSINESS. I HAVE FOUND THEIR PRICES TO BE UNBELIEVABLY REASONABLE WHEN THE AUTHENTICITY OF THEIR PRODUCTS IS TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT.

DENIZENS OF THE LESSER SERVICES MAY HAVE OTHER VIEWS BUT WHAT REALLY COUNTS IS THE FACT THAT THEIR MARINE CORPS UNIFORM ITEMS ARE OF MUSEUM QUALITY!

Maybe USMC stuff is the only thing they do correctly. My hat was three months late, over $40 more than promised, an entire numbered hat size too small and they called my home and told me never to order from them again because "Frankly, we don't need your business that badly." when I dared to return it.
You be the judge if you want to order from a place like that.
