Title: New rifle has been acquired
Post by: Pony Racer on November 11, 2008, 06:43:02 AM
Dear Sir, I am happy to report that through some trading  and penny pinching I am the proud new owner of a 1866 carbine in 45lc.  I plan to baptiise her with fire and moosemilk on the 16th of November.

She makes for a good companion for my 1872 OT's in 44 Russian.

Found my old 45lc dies and have around 120 pieces of brass are ready to go with one round loaded and double checked for oal - good to go!

I am using 2f of app - since the bullets I have are not BP friendly lubed.

2.2 cc of powder filled up the brass with a barely audible crunch when seating the 250 grain bullet on top.

Will see how she shoots next sunday.

Good Deal...Enjoy the new toy.  All of my new toys are going in the gunsafe.  They aren't quite right for our game... ;)

I have aquired some revolvers this week:  An older Colt offical Police revolver , marked "Richmond Police Dept. #220, a Victory model Smith revolver, and a Uberti "Doc Holliday" special edition birdshead nickel plated in 45 LC.  I also bought a 1860 Henry by Uberti in 45 LC but it hasn't arrived at the FFL dealer yet.

Slim, I've never had a Henry rifle before this one. I've got a Rossi 92 in 357 and a Winchester 94 Trapper in 45 LC.  I'm thinkin' about shootin' BP in the Henry.

I picked up my Henry Sat. Afternoon. The former owner told me that all he shot in it was BP. It's a 45 LC. Can I buy BP cartridges or do I reload. I know nothin' about reloadin'.

Look for Black Dawge cartridges ...or make friends with someone who reloads

I reload my own.

I had some blowback in 45lc but with a good crimp it was minimized.

Great fun - it is amazing how the slight differences in the 66 made me shoot it lower at first than my 1873 - but I did not miss and with the verbal help I got back to the center of the rifle target.

Hoping to shoot her again first week in December.

Hoping my 1880-90's USRCS short jacket is ready for the match too.

The other thing they say is to be sure and use a 250 gr. bullet.

I was using a 250 grain pill but will be trying 200 and 180 grain as well.

Course shooting Holy Black - my view to the target will be challenged anyway from the Blessed Smoke.

Congratulations, pard!  They're right, 'tho if you buy the BlackDawge cartridges, they'll be a 230 gr. bullet ... but that'll work, too.

We need to get you started reloading.  And learn to drop the "L" in 45 Colt.   :o  They UNofficially added the "Long" to keep the confusion down because of the 45 S&W (45 Schofield) cartridges.  And the "L" or Long ISN'T official - 'tho you'll find it many places by the uninformed ... INCLUDING the Colt (tm) website.  ::) :P ???

OK -- folks - let the flaming start!  ;)

We need to get you started reloading.

And soon! the unofficial round count for the 2009 Grand Muster is sitting at 100 rounds rifle and 100 rounds pistol (plus for side matches).

I procured an 1866 rifle in .44 Special that I shoot .44 Colts quite successfully with - a perfect match to my Colt and Remington conversion pistols in the same caliber.  Somewhere in one of my books I have some photos of an Army officer with an 1866 and a Richards conversion.
