Title: Henry Movies Today
Post by: Tuolumne Lawman on December 31, 2006, 12:41:10 PM
Sitting here recouping from shoulder surgery, I just watched Willie Nelson as a defrocked preacher kill two bad guys, who were  assailing a lady, with his 1860  Henry.  It os on the Hallmark channel.  The next movie is "The Outsider" where the hero also totes a henry.  Maybe later I will get out lonesome dove <g> and get a Henry fix.  Already watched Unforgivien and got my Spencer fix.

How about the HBO series "DEADWOOD". When Charlie Udder comes across Seth Bullock lying unconsious after his (Bullocks') fight with the renegade Indian. I think it's the fifth episode in the first season. Charlie  dismounts and cocks his '66 and scouts the area.
Worth watchin'.

I think the movie you were watching with Willie as the preacher was "Redheaded Stranger".  Good show.  The girl is Kathrine Ross of Butch Cassity and the Sundance Kid fame.

Yep, not a bad movie.  Better than a lot.

I also like the one where Willie is with Gary Busey - but I don't remember that one's name.

Henry Movies Today?
Well  first movie is ' Last Stand at Saber River' with Tom Selleck
American Outlaws.Where Gabriel MAcht as Frank James shoots with his Henry and eliminate a Gatlin Gun and a canon. ;)
Next, Silverado., where Danny Glover intones 'Have you ever seen what a Henry rifle can do to someone?'
In 'Shenandoah' where James Stewart and his sons are using Henrys. But i think that they where '66 Winchesters without the wooden forearm. They also have all loading gates at there side. When i'm right the first Henry with a loading gate was the Henry Rifle  s/n 13001 mfg 1866 - Experimental Henry w/loading gate.

In The Horse Soldiers, John Wayne's troops were armed with "Henrys."  Actually they were Model '92s, brass plated with the fore stocks removed.  A very early example of Hollywood trying to do it correct with what was available.

If you watch Last stand at Saber River it has both Henrys & Spencers plus a hole heap of guns you don't see in a lot of films.

I Seem to remember Col. Marlow's troops had Trapdoor Springfields & 75 Remingtons....

Perhaps the Butternut guerillas, Hank Worden, Ken Curtis , etal had the 92's you saw....

"Saber River"  with Tom Selleck, great movie.  Tom's movies use historical period correct weapons in most of his cowboy period movies.  Nothing finer than a good Henry Rifle!

"Alvarez Kelly" staring William Holden and Richard Widmark (1966) also used the Herny Rifle.  Set during the "War of Northern Aggression."  Based on an event during the war.  A  herd of yankee beef is recoverd from the yankees by CSA Col Tom Rossiter (Army of Northern Virginia), and the herd is delivered to starving Confederate troops in Richmond. Great movie.

Hey Tuolumne Lawman hows the shoulder doing.  Had two myself second was december 2005.   I takes time to mend so don't push it.

yes and no... there was a maker Rumored here in the States.... after much searching and contacting...It get hold of one,
I wound up with a Original w/ the North's improvement, that is what I need for the Mini Series North & South 1.
As I recall, the price first quoted for the replica was around $900... later it seemed to jump to $1100. By then the
Rumor they dried up and went away... I doubt many were ever made.

And some of the Lakotas also carring Henrys. But i think that all the Henrys are '94 Winchesters.

I'm looking also for a movie with Brian Keith.I don't remember the name of the movie, but i remember that he had a wagon full of Henrys he wnts to sell.Anybody here who knows the name of that movie?

The Halls replica carbine was made by a guy(a reenactor) in Colo.if I remember right,I saw one and it was very pricey, some of the guys in my reenactment group at the time wanted to get them because we were doing a-lot of movie work at the time and there was a Mexican war movie in the works, this all happened in the mid 1980's and by the mid too early 90's  the Hall replica had vanished due too the fact that making 1Z's cost too much money. This is how I remember the events.Mickey.

Reenactors were using the Henry rifle at events in the early 1980's so....I wonder if they weren't being used as early as that in the movies? Any help here with this question? I don't know for sure if one was one in the TV series "The Blue&the Grey"? I know they used a Spencer replica.

Both Spencers used in The Blue & the Grey, one by Gregory Peck the other by Stacy Ketch were mine,
I still have both.
And no, I don't think anyone said The Henry in Last Stand at saber River was the first... ???

I carried one in the Blue and the Grey  & again in North & South II .
I carried a Halls Carbine with the North improvement in North & South I

Just saw'Major Dundee '(The Extended Version) (1965)with Charlton Heston, Richard Harris and James Coburn.
Great movie.
We have a classic cavalry action in which the European and American styles of cavalry fighting are shown for this period. Dundee's boys have Henry repeating rifles which gives them a massive firepower advantage over the French Lancers.Richard Harris looks great and brings a rebel energy to the movie.

Well, howdy!

I just watched a Gunsmoke that guest starred Forrest Tucker as Sgt. Holley.  He played the same character in at LEAST 2 episodes.  Any-hoo, he was totin' around and talkin' 'bout his S&W Model 3 pistol and facing Miss Kitty - who had HIS rifle - and saying that the rifle was a Henry and both were in 44 Caliber and BOTH would "blow the hump off a buffalo at a hundred yards."   ::)  They must have both been chambered in 44 Magnum.  ???  :P  ::)  ;D  Or not.  Tee-Hee-Heee!

It WAS an S&W in his hand.  However, the "Henry" was an 1866 with the front wood removed.  A "Hollyweird Henry"   ;D

I'll say this;  I've seen some cool old guns on that show over the years - not EVERYTHING was a Colt Mod. P or an 1892 Winchester, as MANY movies are/were.

Brent.....If we're talking about real Henrys, I can go you one better. Try "The Far Country" ooops, should have been "The Man From Laramie" with James Stewart, I believe 1956. Jane Darwell  (Grapes of Wrath, etc;) the old lady in the buck board that breaks up the fight between Stewart and the Boss's weeny son is carrying a original Henry Rifle.

One of the best movies regarding the Henry is a film called "Sacred Ground" starring Tim McIntire and Jack Elam (not the documentary of the same name)  Its about a Mountain Man (who sports a frontstuffer) who gets his 1/2 Indian child stolen by an Indian tribe - the Mountain Man built his cabin with his indian wife on the tribe's Sacred burial Ground.  The wife is killed by the tribe when they tear down the cabin, with her inside the cabin, but the child is born and lives.  The Mountain man wants the child back and he sees this new invention - a Henry Reeeepeater - which he steals from the trading post and he "invades" the indian camp to reclaim his child.  He uses the superior Henry fire power to battle the Indians trying to steal back the child, who they believe has the power of the spirits because it was born on Sacred Ground.  The star of the show is the Henry Rifle.  I have a copy of the video, but the price on Amazon is OUTRAGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

http://www.amazon.com/Sacred-Ground-Eloy-Casados/dp/B00068S3SM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1244051440&sr=1-1

Pretty good flick.

I'll be dog gone...I'm watching TRUE GRIT JW's version....

I knew Tom Chaney carried a Henry..tonight for the first time ( when Cheney shoots Mattie's father )
I noticed the loading port ... a King's Patent ?  maybe 66 with Henry Barrel ?
Later at the creek ,Tom Cheney has an actual Henry 1860 when Mattie slides down the hill and finds him.

Confirmed ...I've watched that movie when it opened in 1969 and some 40 years never noticed that before  :-\

I know I’m resurrecting the dead here, but I was watching the DVDs of the first season of Gunsmoke and saw what I assume to be a real Henry in an episode aired on 07-07-1956 called “Prairie Happy”.  A character pulls it out of a cloth case in the Long Branch and shows it off as the new gun he bought for fighting Indians.  It shows it long enough to see that it’s a Henry, but that’s about it.  I was hoping it would show up again later in the episode, but it didn’t.

In 1956 , Stembridge gun rentals might have provided the Henry or Western Costume who also had a large prop gun inventory.

the photos below were provided by Stembridge

The Hollywood Henry ( often called ) was a 92 converted to mimic a Henry , actual number is not know to me but a goodly number were produced .
This one was in " Cheyenne Autumn " used by Jimmy Stewart as Wyatt Earp. Photo from Stembridge .
Several of these were use in the "Bonanza" carried by the Cartwright's.....

Stembridge also had several REAL Henry's , this one sold at auction 4 years ago. Photo from the Little John Auction

And this Iron frame also , I believe from Stembridge collection is reported go between $80,000 - $ 140,000. Photo from the Little John Auction.

Enjoy but Watch your keyboard from the drool  ;D

Here are some stills from the Gunsmoke episode.  It is certainly a Henry and I'm assuming that it's an original.  The front sling swivel is visible, although I couldn't spot the corresponding one on the stock.

I might add that he looks pretty proud of his new Henry.  I imagine that most of us have had similar looks when we're showing off our new guns!

Very interesting Major. I'll have to ask a buddy of mine over here in the U.K. Who knows Garry James & Phil Spangenberger if they may have eny info on the Halls replica? As i would love to do a1850's Dragoon impression.

Glad this old thread got resurrected , I know it leans on Henry's

but since the Halls was brought up....

The Halls re-pro was being made by the late Bill Laybourne of Ordnance Park in the mid-80's, I had actually contacted him, as I need some for a film I was doing pre-production for...
I wound up using a original, I had bought , as Mr. Laybourne was unable to meet the time table requirement for the show.
In another thread, I had mentioned this, though it had slipped my mind in resent years...

as an aside , I did not Prop "Ride with Devil" nor work on it...but I know several that did...
and put the Prop master in touch with Uberti USA & Taylor's . I was despondent they use brass framed Remington s.
I understood Ang Lee like the look of them even though, several advised they were unauthentic.

Just saw 'War Arrow' from 1953, with Jeff Chandler, Noah Berry , Henry Brandon.
You can see a lot of ' Movie Henry Rifles' and at least one ' Original Henry Rifle'.
Jeff Chandler is loading the 'Original  Henry Rifle'.Never saw this in a movie before.

Oh boy! A "Frankenthread" brought back to life! IT LIVES!!!

Actually, I watched "War Arrow" yesterday and I was going to start a thread about the Henrys in the movie.  I thought that I'd better do a search, though, to see if it had already been pointed out.  Well, of course it had.  I will say, though, that in the movie, they arm a bunch of fighters with Henry rifles, handing them out from a case.  The men are seen admiring the rifles.  When they have to shoot them, however, the guns transmogrify into "Hollywood Henrys".  As noted, Jeff Chandler is seen loading a Henry and even easing down the follower onto the live rounds.  I'm not sure what he was putting in, but I doubt that they were actual rimfire rounds.  I'll have to say, I was pretty impressed that they even tried to get something authentic by showing actual Henrys, even if they couldn't use them for the shooting scenes!

Oh--and the person quoted above failed to mention the lovely Maureen O'Hara in the movie!

There are a couple of episodes on Hell on Wheels where the Henry is used as well as the 1866. In fact there are a few where both are used. The time period depicted would coincide with this since it occurs after the Civil War.

Silverado is mentioned often but it's actually a 1866 with no forearm hence the loading gate. Looks like sepearte magazine and barrel as well but the loading gate is easy to identify.

Since you mention "Hell on Wheels"

The use of Henry's & Yellowboys was (at least for me) overshadowed by the ignoance of both

the Armorer & Propmaster  ::) guy !

Used as the hero piece the brass frame never-ever 1860 Army repop !  for a Griswold & Gunnison
then compound the 'BULL" with this ....
https://www.amc.com/shows/hell-on-wheels/video-extras/season-01/episode-01/the-guns-inside-hell-on-wheels

then he clains there were "100,000 Griswold's made so they are quit rare "  ::)

Well rare is correct...but only 2500 were assembled before the works were destroyed

This is a Griswold & Gunnison 2nd Model

There were two in Silvberado.  One was an 1866 without a handguard, and one was a 1860 Henry.  You see them both in the scene where Danny Glover picks up one in each hand.

Just to put some Patadas inna soup ....... You are all aware, yes, In the lead up to the 1866, Winchester actually built several "Transitional" rifles with EXACTLY the same look as the rifle in Glovers hands.  Side loader, round separated magazine, dovetailed magazine hanger, the whole enchilada.  No reason an individual couldn't have acquired one of those prototypes.

I enjoyed "Hell On Wheels" because of the setting, the characters and the drama.

At least there weren't any '92s or '94s or Colt SAAs.

Agreed and although I may have missed some parts which may have been incorrect I did like the fact that they used period correct Henrys and Winchester 1866s.

My horsey friends get bent out of shape over incorrect tack for the era. It's seldom correct but we don't notice or care much if we buy into the story.

I was interested to see groups of cavalry troopers all armed with 1866 rifles.  The producers liked those shiny brass guns...  As was mentioned, though, at least they weren't all '92s and '94s.

They really did. If I remember correctly the Sweed smuggled or purchased a crate of 1866s at one point and later in the series there were a bunch present when the Chinese attempted to take a train.  But all during the series you can see either a Henry or 1866s.

Looking back through this old thread i didn't see a movie mentioned called Arizona 1940. With Jean Arthur and William Holden. About half way through she gives him a Henry.

Yes, she did, along with a Blakeslee box. I haven't heard of historical references of people using Blakeslee boxes with Henry rifles, but I imagine it would work.

Watched "The Kid" Saturday on dvd.  Ethan Hawke as Pat Garrett has an "iron" frame (Uberti) Henry in several scenes.  In one, you can see it is loaded, but in a scene where he's sitting on a porch talking to someone, the follower is down.

It was okay.  I give it 3 stars of 5.  Pretty slow at times and some plot holes.  Played a little fast and loose with the Billy the Kid history.   For those who haven't seen a trailer, the name "the Kid" is actually about a younger kid with his own troubles that gets involved with both Billy and Pat Garrett.  The gunfights were decent.
