Took my new Ruger Hunter Bisley to the range last weekend and fired both .44 magnum (180 and 240 grain) and .44 special (lead 246 grain, I think).
Accuracy-wise, the .44 mag was all over the place and not just from kick anticipation. The .44 special, even out of a dirty barrel and with lead bullets was dead on target; very tight groups: holes touching one another sort of thing. Plus (no surprise here), the .44 special was a lot more fun to shoot.
I think I have found a new favorite cartridge. Hope CAS doesn't abandon this fine round.

I think you'll also like his daddy, the .44 Russian, maybe you should give it a try too.

S&W Number 3 revolver round. Would it work in a regular .44 magnum handgun like the .44 special?

Yes. ;D The .44SW SPL was just an evolution of the .44SW Russian as the .44 Rem Mag was an evolution of the .44SW SPL. Only difference is the case lenght.
