Title: Trail Boss Powder. Hopefully Soon Again
Post by: Rube Burrows on February 01, 2024, 01:54:36 PM
I was told last year that 2024 should see the return of Trail Boss. I enquired yesterday for an update through thier Instagram page and here is the response I got.

I am at least hopeful that it will still hit the market soon.

Trail Boss was made in, of all places, Australia.  I inquired also and got a reply back the next day saying that yes, they were planning to get it back on the shelves this year, and also answered my question about their source, and yes, it will again come from Australia.

There was a report on the Wire that Powder Valley had a few pounds of TB in stock for a short time this morning.  Whether that was old stock that got located or new stuff starting to trickle in was not known.

No biggie to me, I have used it sparingly and have about a pound and a half, but probably won't buy any more especially because it is about the most expensive smokeless powder out there (from the manufacturer, not talking about the scalpers who made it worse).

I changed from Trail Boss in my .38 specials to 4227, and I think I like it just as well if not better than the TB, but wouldn't you know it, now the 4227 seems to have been depleted.

I went to the local Bass Pro Shop the other day and they had IMR 4227 on the shelf. So I bought some. Never have seen Trail Boss for sale anywhere.

Is this for CAS?  The descriptions I see of IMR4227 seem to suggest it for magnum loads.

I am loading 9 grains of 4227 under a 158 grain round nose flat point. 9 grains is the suggested minimum.

Yes, for cowboy action shooting.

My use is Milsurp rifles, @ 75-80 % of case Vol....

I bought a 2.5 LBS. container at the Melbourne Gun show.

You are correct, I use 2400 and 4227 pretty much interchangeably. I use lots of either one in 357 / 44 / 41 Magnum behind jacketed hollow points normally. From my experience these powders like to be used in near maximum loads. When you use them in less than maximum loads you get lots of unburned powder.
