Title: Help me with the math
Post by: Froogal on January 08, 2024, 12:50:28 PM
How many 44-40 cartridges can I expect to load with one pound of Goex FFF?

Just need an idea if I have enough on hand or if I should order more BEFORE the price goes up?

There are 7000 grains to the pound. The math should look something like this:

7000 ÷ (the weight of your load) = (the number of loads in a pound of powder)

Example (assuming a load of 35 grains):

7000 ÷ 35 = 200 cartridges from a pound of powder, not counting for spillage or loss.

With black powder, of course, if you are measuring by volume, you would need to weigh some charges to come up with the actual weight in order to have an accurate estimate the number of loads you can get from a pound.

Hopefully that helps.

Thank you bunches! I know I have all that info, but my brain currently is as snowy as it is outdoors.

Is it supposed to go up, or are you just being safe?  It's already gone up 40% or so since I last bought some in 2021.  Of course, that was before Goex closed/reopened and all that.

Just being safe. And also Midway offered special birthday pricing.

Vast majority of my shooting the 44-40 has been with 2F black powder and the MAV 44 Big Lube bullet.
I get about 220 shots per lb of 2F.

Regarding my use of the Lee 200 RNFP on the other forum - I only use it for smokeless loads.
I could use the MAV for smokeless, but the Lee saves me time and lube during the loading process.
My be a tad more accurate, but either bullet will connect routinely on a 17" steel plate at 200 using the barrel sights.
