Title: A question for the sages
Post by: Major 2 on January 02, 2024, 09:00:28 AM
I read in the Chronical the 2024 rules changes approving rifle calibers below 40 calibers.
The article also mentions Teddy Roosevelt and Doughboy will be added to the SASS recognized main match categories for Wild Bunch Action.
What are the Teddy Roosevelt and Doughboy categories?
I was surprised to see a 03A3 photograph in action in that same Chronical on-line issue.

I been away from any WBAS, quite some time, it pretty much petered out here in Cent. Florida.

03 Springfield, 303 Enfield, Mauser etc. ?

are these shot at reduced power? or long range full power

All-lead projectiles, thus at reduced velocity of ~1200-1500 fps.  Our club uses 2" diameter targets so we can set up in a regular bay,  YMMV.

Interesting but as usual they are behind the curve of ECSASS. We’ve been shooting BAMM for years. I would love to stretch out our military rifle targets but our range is only so big. Now if they would allow DAs I could get excited. ‘Remember the Maine’
Hope you had a good holiday Roger.

Thank you, Ed, I did  :)

Slim, I saw the article in the link Tuolumne Lawman posted on Storm, I had read of the rifle caliber change somewhere, but the Teddy Roosevelt and Doughboy classes was news to me...

Thanks, Major 2.

I agree with Ed on allowing DAs. I have some S&W and Colts that would like to be shot more.  ;D

When they went form 5 rounds in the pistol to 7 a few years ago, I figured that would close the door on ever allowing double action revolvers.  If they only went to 6 rounds instead, that would have at least left the door open for future use of DA's.

 >:( I know, I know  :(

I know I keep harping about this, and carping about what SASS did to "Wild Bunch.'

However, all of the things everybody keeps wishing for, were originally in the Wild Bunch Side Match, as it was originally put together.  Lotsa rifles, Broom handles, Lugers, 1917 Revolvers, lotsa Shotguns.  Then SASS took it and ran it right into the ground.  Wild Bunch really yousta be "Wild Bunch," bring out yer safe queens and PLAY.

Then SASS "DUMB'D IT DOWN."  HAS NEVER RECOVERED.

I can't say why it Petered out here, I suppose it was combination of things.
Maybe the restrictions, but in reality, attendance.
WB was dabbled locally with by a handful of players, but it never gelled.

Doughboy and Teddy Roosevelt have been authorized side matches for a number of years.  The sidematch rules are in the SASS Range Operations and Match Director Guide - Wild Bunch Action Shooting.

The changes to Wild Bunch were announced in a SASS HQ Newsletter email to the membership back in October.  At the time the  rules were still being written -- I guess they still are.

Howdy Bunch,

What Coffinmaker said. One of my clubs adds a WB match that can also be shot as a normal cowboy event. Plenty of Govt. models, but also a few safe queens to make it fun. I believe the primary rule is guns made before 1912. That adds a lot of room for fun. If I wanted to shoot a combat match there are other groups that accommodate that.
