WHY, would anyone want to shoot a single shot RB at paper when they could be shooting a nice lever action at paper?
Well, i'v been finding out, now that i have one. Got one in a trade, 26" x 1 1/4" rd. barrel on a #5 in 45-70. IT ( call it my ugly gun), was a project gun someone started about 10 years ago (owner passed years ago), and family want to get rid of it.
The action had been buffed and chrome plated, even the screws, i made a new butt stock (w/ 14 1/2" trigger pull) & forearm, working on the butt plate now. They miss aligned the holes for their scope mounts on the barrel (i plug& tig'd 4 holes), used 2 of the other 4 holes to mount a plate and added a Williams peep sight in front of the action on the plate, and made a temporary front sight that slips on the barrel w/ a set screw on the bottom. Took it to the range to zero my sights, TA-DA, this old ugly gun shoots straight as a string, by me and my friend who was with me, (it weigh's in at 14lbs.). Still have lots to learn about this Remington RB, shooting low Trapdoor loads (Lyman 49th edition), "what recoil", a gentle push back w/ .316gn. pc'd, 457191 bullets. Will do pics. when i can get my grandson to help me.

Sometimes plating was thought to be useful against corrosion.
My favorite plating, tho rather ugly, is industrial hard chrome. On a firearm it comes out incredible hard, durable, and with a shiny grey mirco-orange peel finish. One customer waaaay back ordered a TC hawken, .54 caliber,
Adjustable peep sights, complete cleaning kit & screwdrivers, molds for a maxiball and roundball, 10,000 primers, replacement nipples and small parts. Had the barrel sent out for Armalloy industrial hardchrome inside and out.
Customer was a professor spent years in U.S. and now heading back to Africa.

The biggest thing you have to watch with a roller is they will”shoot backwards”
What happens is if you don’t get the breech block completely closed and pull the trigger if the round doesn’t go off be sure to cock the hammer before you push the breechblock completely or the hammer will fall and the gun will fire. Thumbs have been broken in the situation
The other thing that can cause them to do that is a stuck firing pin can set the primer off cause the breech to blow open and send the fired case into the shooters face.
But yes a roller in good operating condition can shoot extremely well

Clever front sight! I may steal...hmmm..umm ...I mean borrow that concept.
I have a No. 1 Model in 50-70 that I'm working on. It has a 36" thin profile barrel like the 3-band military RB's. I could hardly see the pimple on the muzzle that is often referred to as the front sight. I removed (filed smooth) the sight yesterday. My original plan was to file a dove-tail for the front sight. I may try your method before I put a file to the barrel.

Looks like it may have been a parade rifle at one time.
Does it have the slide bar extractor or the rotary ejector?
Should make a dandy hunting rifle if you can cover the shine on the action.

Good Troy, i wasn't sure what i was (am) going to do w/ the barrel as in taper or oct. or 1/2 rd. I remember see a 22 w/ this style of front sight (50 yrs. ago), so i copied it, more or less so help yourself and glad to help.
Ranch 13, it was like i said someone's project that never got finished. I was friends w/ the feller. He was building it for a target shooter but died from an aneurism. It had a large forearm (not finished) & a broken stock w/ a high cheek piece. I'm still not sure i will keep it myself. BUT, i'm having a good time and enjoying shooting it(her)I still have a few questions about the action and will be looking for some help. The Williams peep sight is working out just fine, i not really a scope guy.

I love the 7mm rolling block that we found at a garage sale. Shoots straight and filled a niche in my collection. Sadly it just catapulted me further into the single shot rifle stage. When I moved to Nebraska, I had 2 single shot rifles. Now I am up to 7....

Took my "ugly" gun (see pic's above) to the range to try some loads (chrono died on me). Just fired 5rds. offhand (weigh's 14lbs) to check primers & brass then saw a Blue pop can at the 50yd. line fired the last rd. & the Blue can disappeared this old gun is accurate.

I have one in 40-50 Sharps Bottleneck. It is a special order gun with a bunch of features. The wood is XXX and has horn fore end cap, set trigger tang peep sight and Beeches front sight. It shoots very well and I hope to get it shot next year more than I did this year.
The target is 200 yards with the lower three shots fired first, then a sight adjustment and 2 more shots. This gun does shoot well…

They aren't much to look at, but I love shooting my .50-70 NYS Roller. It's one of the few guns I own that it seems like if I point it in the general direction of the target, I'll hit it. I don't miss often with it..
