Title: Looking for Spencer 1860 Rifle Info
Post by: Phillips on July 18, 2023, 12:16:13 PM
Hello All

I recently obtained a Spencer model 1860 rifle, serial number 4061 and am trying to find any and all info I can on it.

I have been able to find this serial range went to Wilders Brigade, Union Army of the Cumberland.  Would anyone have more info or tell me where I can do more research on this rifle?  Would like to find out what unit it was issued to and if at all possible, individual it was issued to.

Thanks!!

Phillips,

I checked on your serial # 4061 in my Springfield Research Books on Civil War weapons.

It appears that your Spencer Rifle MAY HAVE been issued to either Company E, 72nd Indiana Volunteer Infantry in April, 1863 or Company K, 9th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry in 1865.

PLEASE see my thread on the SSS Home Page entitled, "Spencer Serial # Information DISCLAIMER" for an explanation on how I arrive at my conclusion on how Spencers were issued to Civil War units.

You might want to purchase a Civil War Regimental History from either unit mentioned above for more information on your Spencer Rifle.
