So, I have an original Winchester 1887 in 12 gauge that I only shoot black powder in but after talking to a friend of mine who has a gun shop I am about to purchase a Winchester 1901 in 10 gauge.
The Winchester 1901 was an improvement over the 1887 in that it was made to handle smokless loads. The gun is in great working condition so no worries there.
If anyone has one of these or similar 10 gauge please chime in
My questions are as follows;
What is a good starting load for the Winchester 1901?
I use Brass hulls in my 1887, what is a good place to get 10g brass hulls?
Can anyone recommend other types of hulls?
Basically looking for any info for shooting this Model 1901 both for fun and possibly for hunting.

Ballistic Products has Plastic Cheddite hulls for a good price. You may have to cut them down to run in a 1901 however.

Thanks. Going to check them out. Picked up the gun today. Pretty nice as I thought it would be. Just need to find an original buttplate. The original was replaced with a big cushion one that has long started disintegrating.
Serial number dates to 1917.

You are likely to run into problems if You try to combine smokeless powder and all-brass shells.
Smokeless normally needs the resistance from a firm crimp to combust properly.
Crimping all-brass shells means buying expensive roll-crimping dies.
And working the brass shells when crimping and expanding translates into shorter case life.
You might be able to get around the problem by heavily glueing the overshot card in place without any crimp...
I would recommend blackpowder in the all-brass shells, and getting some 10ga. plastic hulls that can be readily star-crimped or roll-crimped for smokeless loads.

I should have been more clear when it comes to that. My smokeless loads will be made in plastic hulls cut down from 3.5” to the 2 7/8” size once I find someone who has them in stock.
The brass hulls will be black powder like it shoot in my 87.
