Go to; "cartridge-corner.com/riflelist2.htm" there are a number of charts showing case dimensions for almost every cartridge known to man. Go to the chart for rifle cartridges over caliber .38. Scroll down to find your cartridge, then look for another cartridge with similar measurements. Close is good enough as there are ways to deal with small discrepancies.

I did this and found no direct match. I suspect that a .45 basic case might work if you must try a case conversion.

You still have the problem of shipping. You might try suppliers in the UK? A possibility is Henry Krank in England or try one of the several suppliers in Germany. I might ask if you know anyone in the US who could legally bring your cases in person? I say legally, as you don't want to risk breaking any laws.

Try Buffaloarms.com. If it shows out of stock, go ahead and order. They'll make it as needed. Also check out the Shilohrifle.com forum.

There is the problem of shipping cases out of the good O'l USA. Part of the "war on terror"! You can't risk Uncle Sam having any complicity in supplying deadly arms to a possible terrorist! Sorry Gilbert, I wasn't referring to you.

Google shows cases from Hornady and Bertram. Still, shipping out of the US is your critical factor. Give Henry Krank in England a call.

The best bet you might have getting brass for that is going with Bertram which is made in Australia. There is no one, with the demise of Jamison brass, at this time in the US making properly head stamped brass for the 44-90 or the 44-77 other than one or two custom brass makers that lathe turn cases, but again you will be up against the export problem.
You can trim and fire form brass from 45-100 or 45-110 brass, but there again availability will be a problem unless you can access some Norma brass. The 45 based cases are a little small in the rim but will still extract alright, and it will swell the web a bit but once fire formed lasts a good long time.
With the proper swaging equipment it is possible to form it from 348 winchester but the hardness of that brass doesn't work real well with blackpowder loads.

Will 43 Spanish work as a base case?  Might be a little short I guess--but we used to make 43 Spanish from 348 Winchester.

43 spanish would be pretty short, it like the 44-77 is 2 1/4. It does make a fair substitute for 44-77 by expanding the neck and fire forming.

Data from "Handloaders Manual... etc.":

.50-110
Case length:  2.4"
Head diameter: .551"
Rim diameter:  .607"
Rim thickness:  .07"
(looks to me like the case length is too short in the .50-110 to make a .44-90....)

.45-100
Case length:  2.6"
Head diameter:  .500"
Rim diameter:  .597"
Rim thickness:  .059"
(this case length also looks to be a tad short....)

.45 Basic / .45-120
Case length:  3.25"
Head diameter:  .506"
Rim diameter:  .597"
Rim thickness:  .059"
(I think the .45 Basic comes closest of the three options You have.)

I have made .450 Black Powder Express cases from Norma .45 Basic.
They developed an unsightly bulge about .25" in front of the case head upon fire-forming, but hold up.
Had to thin the rim thickness from the front on a lathe, as British case rims are notoriously thin.

.450 Nitro Express (same dimensions as .450 BP Express)
Case length:  3.25"
Head diameter:  .548"
Rim diameter:  .626"
Rim thickness:  .045"

Based on these dimensions and my experiences the Norma .45 Basic cases should bulge less when fire-formed into .44-90 Sharps Necked than into .450 BPE.

Gilbert; It looks like the .45 Basic is the best for your needs. However, the .45-110 at a case length of 2.6 inches is close enough, if that is all you can obtain. Necking the case down as you require usually lengthens the case somewhat. If the case is long enough to securely hold a bullet you will be good to go.

Cast bullets in this type of cartridge work best if they are seated long enough to touch the chamber throat, or be pressed a little bit into the throat.

You are starting on quite a journey to master loading for your rifle. Enjoy the trip!

That basic brass will work, but if you could get the shorter 2.8 you won't have to trim as much.
Trim a couple the brass down to 2.6 then run the necks into your sized die and fire form , then after you have those cases formed you can measure and see if you need to trim more or less for the best fit.
When doing that for 44-77 brass I trim the basic to 2.3.

I am surprised by the way of doing this shop I have been ordering for more than 30 years in the US and I have always had an answer to my letters or mails.
I have an Order  number from their shop #6959, I sent 5 emails to get their account number for bank transfer as specified in their terms of sale and never received a reply, funny way of doing trade and lack of courtesy of this shop, so I will order in Australia where I found bertram in 40-82 very close to the 44-90.
