If this is in the wrong spot, I apologize. But, there are three threads dedicated to the Winchester lever guns. The 1895 has been left out! I recently had a chance to inspect one of these and I'm hooked. My son acquired a 1895 SRC from a co-worker in 30-06. It has some minor issues, but it is pretty sweet. The saddle ring is missing but the bale is intact. Easy replacement. Now, I have to have one. The recent Oaks, Pa gun show was a disappointment. Very few old guns. So, how about a 1895 Winchester thread?!

Fine gun, I have a Browning in 30-06. More than likely as it is not a SASS caliber is why it is absent.
Then again its fine for the era pre-1898 and are used in musters of the Grand Army of the Frontier.
My Browning and my Grandfather with his circa 1901

Probably because this is a site dedicated to cowboy action shooting and the firearms associated with those organizations. I am certainly not familiar with all the rules and regulations to the different cowboy action shooting organizations, but I don't recall any of them using the Winchester 1895. It was a late comer that appeared in the late 19th century around the turn of the century, and all of them were chambered for smokeless cartridges. Most of the early production rifles were produced for military use. There is also no threads dedicated to the 1894 probably for the same reason.

We use '94's and '95's in our local cowboy shoots. The '95 figured prominently in at least one actual gunfight, and was heavily used by both the Arizona and Texas Rangers. I'm all for having a page on them!
-
That makes sense. I did the cowboy action for many years until I lost interest. My first years there was a member in one club I found using an original Spencer carbine in 56-50! The 1895 could be used in a clubs side match as well as the 1894. I just have to find one now. The search is on.

I have a Browning 1895 in 30-06 that hopefully will become an NRA musket whenever I get around to it. I don’t see the problem with adding the ‘95. After all they were carried by Teddy’s boys in his ‘Splendid Little War’.

WELL I don't run this here place, but I suspect there is a much better place for the topic than the tail of the 1892 Board. But:
This is after all CAS City. Operative being "CAS" or "Cowboy Action Shooting." The '95 doesn't actually figure anywhere in the time frame upon which CAS is/was established. Its only use might be for some form of "side match" but I can't, for the life of me see what that might be. The only probable possibility I can see, would be in some form Wild Bunch Side Match. Something with a "Bonnie and Clyde" theme.
Kind of like trying to include the '03 Springfield or BAR. No home here me thinks.

Our club has always gone with the theory that if it was really there, it's allowed. As long as the lead bullet load is under 1500 feet per second, it's good. Of course, we also have our rifle target at thirty to fifty yards, too, so we don't really fit the average CAS club paradigm.
-
Sounds like a correct distance to me.
-
We had some people from another club come shoot with us once, and the first thing they said was "Wow, your targets are really small and far away!" We like it. You're supposed to have to actually aim!
-
Would love to shoot with you sir.
-
Welcome anytime, sir! We're a very GAF friendly cowboy shooting club. We're trying to rebuild, since a lot of our old members have "aged out", as it were.
-
I too would enjoy it... sadly distance to Mid -America is the great nullifier :-[
even Baltimore Ed's Carolina Outer Banks BAMM range is a hurtle.
-
Had a beautiful one (original 1895) come through this last year in 30-40 Krag... I was tempted. A couple years ago, we had one in .405 Winchester like Teddy hunted with.
-
Maybe we should have a combo page for the '94 and the '95 since they were both pretty much at the end of our era. Thoughts?
-
I'd love to see a section for the 1894!
-
If there was an 1895 thread, I'd have a place to post a photo of this nice musket I picked up a couple months ago.
-
That’s a very nice ‘95 musket. What caliber?
-
Been away for a while, so sorry for resurrecting an old thread. Both the 94 and 95 are legal for a Teddy Roosevelt category/ match under Wild Bunch rules (although the Magazine capacity of the 95 puts it at a disadvantage). For clubs that have Cody Dixon lever action as a category, both are legal if they meet the sight rules.

There is a famous picture of AZ rangers posing after ending the Morenci Stike violence as I recall 19 winchesters (95) and a krag
-
We simply MUST have a 95 forum. I got a pile of them. ;D
-
What are the SASS rules on cut off date? Isn't it 1898? If that's the case I see no problem. Not that I ever intend to shoot SASS again....too many rules and the targets are too close. :P
-
I’ve told this before but my club is ECSASS, we shoot in Dare Co. Chance is the prez and stage creator. We shoot our rifles at a far enough distance that you have to aim. A group of shooters came down from Va to play with us but complained that the rifle targets were too far. Mike said no problem, next month they were a little closer but smaller. Loved it.
-
Many years ago I rescued a '95 rifle from the abandoned guns bin at the local shop. Turned out to be 1903 vintage in 30-40 and a bit tired. Took a month to get all the jacket fouling out of the barrel. It's still picky about loads, but what a sweet rifle! They were a favorite on the SW border around the turn of the 20th century

I have a Winchester Miroku made 1895 carbine and love it
