Title: SAA barrel lengths
Post by: Galloway on December 21, 2005, 01:26:25 AM
Does anyone have the numbers of 4 5/8th 5 1/2 and 7 1/2 SAA's produced in the 1800's? I heard a rumor that the 5 1/2 wasnt offered untill the 1890's is this true?

I don't have the info with me right now, but I think the 5 1/2 barrel came out in 1878 or 1876.

According to my "Blue Book of Gun Values", the 5 1/2" barrel was introduced in 1875. It goes on to say that the 4 3/4" and the 5 1/2" barrels became popular during the Intermediate Black Powder era: sernos 22000-130000; 1876-1890. It doesn't say how many of each were manufactured.

Yes, but those are for standard production models. Back then Colt took a lot of special orders, as did the other gun makers, and would make any length barrel, within reason, that you wanted.
