A couple of recent threads lately got me to thinking Nostalgia.
The guns that seeded my passion of firearm collecting.
Sure it was the plethora of Golden Era of TV & movie westerns that got me started.
Mattel , Nichols Industries, HUBLEY and Marx were prolific in producing just about every model.
Some were very close Spitting Image and others were fantasy or stylized.
There ( aside from Denix and maybe some high-in $$$ Toy replicas ) is nothing close to the era of the late 1950's - 1960's.
The crap today with its required ORANGE muzzle caps is sold in Dollar stores
( there no more 5 & Dimes either ).

* HUBLEY COLT 45 DIECAST CAP GUN
* Mattel Shoot'n' Sixes ( had a pair ) and the belt buckle with swing out Deringer
* I had a Mattel Shoot'n Shell Rolling block
* Several Daisy BB guns including the spittin' image Model 1894
and the TV ad's , Who remembers Kurt Russell in several ?
What a great time to have been a kid.... a Baby Boomer Ha! BOOMER ! yeah I guess I was ...still am :D

The belt-buckle swing out derringer was really popular because of the T.V. show "Yancy Derringer", I believe.
That and the rolling block carbine found their way into my arsenal. I even had the play set uniform costume to be Rusty from "Rin-Tin-Tin". (My brother had the "Zorro" outfit, his favorite T.V. idol.)
I leaned more towards WWII hardware, charging around the neighborhood with my Mattel Thompson submachine gun and a couple of play hand grenades hanging about my person. Don't remember the manufacturer, but those grenades accepted "Greenie Stick-em Caps" in the tops that'd go off after you pulled the pin. Imagination transformed that snap cap into a horrific explosion of destruction. Especially as I added the sound effects to go with it.
As a matter of fact, every one of those play firearms was enhanced by the use of "Greenie Stick-em Caps".
I also remember being envious of a friend's plastic M-14. Extremely authentic looking, came with a bayonet, and I think it cycled like a BAR when you pulled the trigger, but I could be wrong. Don't remember the manufacturer of that beauty, though.

I had one of the grenades , and a Thompson , I recall it would break down into several components and become a pistol, it was OD color.
I also had 3 gun metal grey all metal M4 Grease guns with a key wind , All three were a Christmas gift the same year , one from my Uncle, another from a family friend of my Dads...I can't recall where the third came in , I just remember getting 3 ....
Pretty darn close looks wise.
I also had a wood & metal 03 , maybe it was trainer or parade rifle of some sort :-\
The golden age of westerns was well before " Combat " Rat Patrol and "Hogan's Heroes"
I recall "12 O'Clock High" and the short lived "The Gallant Men" which had replaced The Roy Rogers Show :o

In first grade for Christmas I received from my grandmother some kind of make-you-smart toy where you put little colored tiles on a black tray to make pictures.
My friend up the road got a toy Winchester lever-action. But his parents wouldn't let him keep it, because it was a "weapon of war."
A trade was quickly arranged, and man was I pleased. My mother, not so much, because she had to explain to her mother what happened to the art tiles.

There were 4 of us brothers, so I'm not sure which of these was "mine" but we all used them. I recall a Fanner 50, the trapdoor carbine, a rifleman lever gun, the swing-out derringer buckle, and a Paladin holster set. But one of my faves was one I would describe as an oversize over/under derringer with rotating barrels, and it had a thin rubber dagger blade that could be extended out from between the barrels. Due to the design, it was only a matter of time before the "axle rod" the barrels turned on snapped off at the frame. I was so bummed.

I remember a little wooden rifle that looked like one of the parade ground rifles cadets used to drill with and of course I dreamed of the Man from UNCLE briefcase that had all the guns you could assemble.

I had a cap pistol that was a copy of an 1851 Colt with brown plastic grips that I really liked. I got a used truck inner tube and cut out a slim Jim holster for it and laced it up with twine. The stitches eventually tore out, but I had fun with it while it lasted. Maybe that cap gun influenced my first cap and ball revolver purchase in 1968; an EIG .36 cal brass framed Navy Colt.

I was of a little later era, playing Cowboys and Native indigenous people in the 70s. Good thing was there was so much hippie cast off fringed items, we had quite a wardrobe. I too had the hubley, bought new in the box from the dime store. I wonder how long it sat on those shelves for me to get it on my 6th birthday in 1972. It fueled my 1860 passion as well. My house was the place to play, I had tons of cap guns. Also had a dad who ran a paper tube company. We had 40 inch diameter tube that was a rocket, star trek jeffries tube, tunnel, etc, had another split in half that was a canoe or flipped over to be our cover to shoot from. The central air conditioner was the bar, we would belly up to and do shots of koolaid, then have the required fight, throwing each other over the bar. Later I read the Iliad and that upped the arsenal to swords and armor (made from paper). Lost it all in the flood of 91.

In the 60’s my buds and I would gear up to play war at the local Sunny’s Surplus store. Never did too much playing cowboy as we were into watching Vic Morrow fight Nazis in Combat every week. Replacements never lasted too long.

"Combat!", "The Gallant Men" and "Rat Patrol" kept my playtime imagination busy.

I did have one of those cowboy revolvers that had bullets with the removable brass piece on the back of each bullet where you placed a greenie stickum cap on each ‘bullet’, put the brass part on and loaded them into the cylinder. Shot them, unloaded and used a cement curb to scrape off the stickum cap. My first foray into reloading.

Thankfully for me, Rat patrol was on in reruns and dad found a camo hat with the flipped up side brim. We played a lot of Rat Patrol, chasing Rommel in my backyard.

My recollection was deep backyard and my Dad had build my sister a log cabin playhouse about 12'X 12' made from fence posts.
There were several large banyan trees to climb, we built a 3 level tree house in one out behind the cabin....
I fell out of it once about 15' and caught in a wedge of a branch, beside from a scrape or two no ill effects...
The neighborhood kids came there as it was the coolest range to play.
We weren't but a few blocks from Biscayne Bay ( Miami) and as I got older the bay front became my haunt.
We fought off the enemy seaborn invasions , played in the Deering Estate grounds , swam, fished and sailed a Pram in, around & under the Rickenbacker Causeway...they were shining times

I had the Chuck Connors Tin Can Alley electronic rifle and Target set. The rifle had the same large loop, just like Lucas had. His rifle is still at the top of my bucket list.

I think I tried to cover all my bases.
Went from young Roy Rogers thru to Vic Morrow.
As I recall I went thru my early years with just Fanner Fifty cap guns. (See below).
Then had one of those Horse Pistols that the Major 2 showed first in his post. (I think it made it down past my knee). It had everything to make it a real cartridge (brass case, lead bullet. Greenie Stickum caps as primers). Just no real powder.
Also added a Daisey 1893 Winchester BB gun. Would load up the reservoir with BBs then push the feed spring down (ala Henry rife) and load 8 to 10 BBs for rapid-fire shotting.
Then went to the Mattel .38 snub nosed revolver with the little push and click spring loaded bullets. (my MOM hated it when she sucked those little plastic suckers into the vacuum cleaner)!
Then finally and a great looking Thompson submachine gun, GI helmet, plastic canteen, and web belt to go out and play “Combat” in the swamp we had in our backyard.
I guess it’s a miracle I’m not a serial or mass killer, but I wouldn’t give those memories u for anything.
And to think my parents would now be in jail for condoning abhorrent behavior of they’re child!!!

Been a loong while. I remember one cap gun that looked like a Colt's SAA, with a sideplate that swung up so you could insert a roll of red caps. Also had a pair (I think) of snubby guns that broke like a S&W. When you opened it, you inserted a round disk of six caps and the gun was, I think, double action. Played cowboys n Indians until 1950, when the Korean war broke out. After that the neighborhood kids went down to a vacant lot and use wooden stick rifles to shoot at imaginary NoKos and ChiComs. I wore my Dad's helmet liner (steel part was too heavy for my neck!).

One of my more vivid memories , was in 1958 .
I was 10 , my Grandfather had rented a house in Lake Chapala , Mexico for a month .
My Folks, Sister and I went down for two weeks....
I recall I had a metal SAA cap firing gun that you could load a single BB ( it did not revolve) and the single cap would launch the BB.
I remember I'd wear it and wander around and the local boys would follow me , some so young they did not wear pants ,
nothing but a T shirt ....
There was a local man that would rent his horses for my Sister and I to ride all over town and he'd follow (walking).
Once my Sister did not go, so he road with me where ever I rode around town.
I read of the Crime and abductions now and wonder how I ever survive :o that vacation

This was my aunt and cousin’s idea of babysitting me. They worked the pony rides at a local amusement park in the summers.
Loved the smell of sweaty horse in the morning!!
