Title: 2020 Grand Muster After Action Report
Post by: Pitspitr on July 07, 2020, 12:39:44 PM

To: The ladies and gentlemen of the GAF at large
Copies to: (Bvt.) Major General U. S. Scout (Ret.),
(Bvt.) Col. Drydock Chief of Staff,
(Bvt. ) Col. Dusty Tagalon Adjutant ,

Ladies and Gentlemen:

I have the honor to submit my report following the 2020 Grand Muster of the Grand Army of the Frontier

By Monday Morning I had completed the mowing and most of my other preparations Quickfire, Broken Nosed Scotty, Silver Creek Slim and Micah and I traveled to nearby Ord to retrieve the targets. By Afternoon most of the rest of the staff had arrived and we finished placing the targets. Tueesday was spent checking toilet paper, installing shade, placing benches and tables, ect. Thursday, Lt. Col.Quickfire, Major Broken Nose Scotty, Lt. Col. Silver Creek Slim, Lt. Col. Ned Neiderlander, Col. Drydock  Hawkeye Hefner, Lt. Col. Good Troy, Whiskey Double, and myself shot the main match stages to ensure that everything was set up correctly and so that we could RO the stages once the main match commenced.

Our mess consisted of 32 shooting participants excluding camp followers. This was off a little from last year's record attendance; however, with the current pandemic this level of participation was considered a major victory!

Friday morning operations commenced with the Expansion Era Match and side matches.

The Main match used the same skirmish format as the Expansion Era Match did.

Saturday evening, we retired to The Sargent Community Center for the banquet which was catered by the Comstock Lodge. The Ladies and the men seemed to quite enjoy the facilities. While there, door prizes were awarded. While the match was still being shot, I had totaled the scores so that the medals and certificates were awarded to the Ladies and the men following the banquet.

Sunday morning, my staff and members of my Council of War met to evaluate the Muster and discuss possible improvements in equipment, logistics and execution.

The Stu Kettle Memorial Gun Shoot Thingy Award was won by Trinity for having the lowest total time.

Here I should thank a number of people: The Broken Bow Lions Club for sponsoring the insurance; Lt. Col. Ned Neiderlander, Col. Drydock, Major Broken Nose Scotty, Lt. Col.Good Troy, Lt. Col. Quickfire, Lt. Col. Silver Creek Slim and Micah, Hawkeye Hefner, Whiskey Double, and all of whom arrived early for arriving early and helped set up and shot the match on Thursday so that they could RO the match for participants. Ira Scott and Hakeye Hefner for donating the use of their UTVs for moving participants between the stages.

Evaluation of the Muster is ongoing, but the consensus is that the format is optimal but improvements can and will yet be made.

I request that participants of this match place their report in this thread as well.

We talked about a couple things a long time ago, did you get steps built to the Headquarters Cabin and there is a hole somewhere around the cooking area.   I should be back next year to cook, but besides the heart problems my hips have problems too.   Not nagging, but perhaps sometime you could drop a bucket of dirt up there out of the way and we could shovel some dirt in any holes when found.   I know I'm not the only old phart that has trouble getting around.

A couple holes were filled.

It was a very enjoyable Muster this year. While the Community Center doesn't have the atmosphere of the Comstock Lodge, it was nice to have a little more room to maneuver.

Brigade Champion?

I think that visually this was the finest I've seen.  The field uniforms were truly spectacular this year,  Russian, Austro-Hungarian, German Seebattalion, a rather natty Boer to mention but a few.  I really look forward to the pictures and video to be posted.

Several folks mentioned to me that these were among the best of the Skirmish runs.  The right targets in the right places with the right props to work with.  Perhaps a bit too much sprinting with the artillery rounds, but that's a lesson learned for the future.  The range itself has become an easy joy to work, with Pit and Ned deserving a lot of credit for their time spent in the offseason.

Yes, Thank you for the reminder; Brigade Champion was Blue Eyed Caballero. 2nd Smokeless Regular, 2nd Smokeless Long Range, 2nd Smokeless Precision Pistol. Also 2nd  in the Field uniform contest! Congratulations Blue Eyed Caballero!

Yes, The theme (The Boxer Rebellion) really lent itself well to seeing some unusual firearms and uniforms.  I thought the stages worked well too, and I really enjoyed the mini artillery piece! I know J Dawg did too as he's actively looking for a donor shotgun for the barrel and action to build himself one.

I always forget something. This year one of the things that I regret is not getting squad pictures. It would have been fun to have had a picture recreating the original picture from the Boxer rebellion with all the different nations represented.  I wouldn't have wanted to be the US soldier in Winter uniform though.

Also EEM and class winners.

Also a tip of the cap to Cabellero, the first BC using a Mosin-Nagant rifle.

Thank you Jerry. It was a great event. Y’all do a tremendous job. This is by far the best match that I’ve participated in. Thank you to everyone that contributed to the success of the Grand Muster. As to the Mosin Nagant” Even a blind hog finds an acorn occasionally “
I’m very honored to be the Brigade Champion and I look forward to next years Grand Muster!
Thanks to all!

HI

I agree with this one.  My major screw up was loading 5 in the Schofield and my first shot was on the empty chamber dammit.  Lesson learnt the hard way.  The Expansion Era was a blast, but I need to practice loading the Schofield more quickly.

I also built 49 (cause I screwed one up) practice rounds for the Krags.  The cartridge loops in the Fair Weather Christian belt were tight, I think I'll fill them a month or so before the next match.

ill you please post the scores?
Will do, but the hand still isn't working real well. I get thinking it's fine and try to use it like normal, then move wrong and the stitches pull. Before I can post the scores I need to redo the spread sheet and replace the keyboard on the home computer.

I'll try to have them by the end of next week.

Hi

This is a bit of a conglomeration of several comments.  We do need to take posse pictures before the match starts and get a list of who's on the posses.  Back in college I was in a large organization, we took a group picture and when it was time to put names on it, we had no clue who was who.  we should also write down who's IN each posse so we don't forget later.

I don't much miss having video's of my screw-ups....  I've only gotten one film of a GOOD skirmish run.

MJS, I did notice the omission of our usual group pictures, but I just assumed it was so there wouldn't be photographic evidence of us not practicing "social distancing". Or we could stand 6 feet apart and use a really WIDE angle camera lens.

Good call  ;) ;)  we could take individuals and label them.  Somehow I think we may all die (at a really old age) and still be social distancing and wearing masks.  Hope not.

Yes, we do. You are hereby assigned to remind me to have them taken at the safety briefing.

I think we'll reach a point where those at high risk may still be doing it, but I think we will reach a point where most will decide the risk is worth it to be normal.  I'm not saying it ain't dangerous to some, but I've seen too many panics over the years to think this one is much different.
