Title: 45 cas in howell clyinder ?
Post by: Higganum on April 01, 2020, 12:07:09 PM
Can a  Remington  R & D, two-piece,  Howell type, cylinder in 45 ACP be counterbored to accept the rimmed 45 CAS cartridge?
Thanks

I don't see why not since Howell makes them that way. It might pay you to email him to find out if the cartridge alignment is the same as for the 45 Colt ones, though. I know the 45 Colt ones are not straight through in alignment with the barrel bore. They are angled slightly in toward the barrel to allow for the rim on the cartridge to get 6 in the cylinder.

  I don't have a cylinder yet, so I didn't know that they're already counterbored. I'll contact them.
Thanks for the help.

Good. Post back what you find out.

If you get the cylinder before hearing from Howell, you could drop the 45 Specials in all the chambers, and find out if there is room for the rims without overlap.  If so, I'd think they could be countersunk.

Have you considering asking if Kenny will make one for you in that caliber? He does do custom work. It might not cost much more, if any, than what you're planning.

I own no conversions at present. Just considering options. I have a S&W 1917 which will shoot 45CAS. I was hoping to get into a conversion without adding another caliber to feed. To me, the rimless ACP "just ain't natural" in an old-time revolver. Just me.

You could just get the .45 Colt cylinder and use your Cowboy Special cases.

It Depends (NO, not those rubber things).  The R&D 6 shot conversion cylinder for Remington has the chambers bored "Off Axis to allow case rim clearance.  The ACP cylinders are bored "On Axis" to to the center axis of the barrel.

For Howell cylinders that fit Colt Pattern Guns, the chambers are bored "On Axis" however, there are only 5 Chambers.  For the CAS game, there is an extra slot for the bolt that locks the cylinder between chambers.

For your application, your most cost effective option would be to use the 45 Colt cylinder for C45S cases and skip the ACP application altogether.

All of the .45 Colt Howell (and Kirst) cyline=ders I have had are counter bored and take .45 Schofield cases.  In fact initially, Walt Kirst designed his Konverter around the .45 Schofield.
