Title: Opening of Shooting Season
Post by: Niederlander on April 14, 2018, 06:00:34 AM
We were supposed to have our first Cowboy Shoot of the year today.  It's now twenty four degrees, it's snowing, and the wind is gusting up to fifty four miles per hour.  I think we'll pass on shooting today!  (I know, I've turned into a wuss in my old age............)

Our second match of the years is scheduled for tomorrow. Weather guesser has scheduled 34 degrees and 30% chance of rain at starting time. Don't know what the others are planning, but I'm just planning for May.

Our local NCOWS club the Blue River Regulators postponed our first shoot of the year which was scheduled for April 1st until tomorrow because of the forecast of 20 degree temperatures,  high winds and snow. Who would have guessed the forecast would be the same three Sundays in a row in April. The state SASS championship shoot in Grand Island with 140 registered shooters was scheduled for this weekend too. Guess I'll load ammo for the Muster!(bamboo piercing)

That was my plan for today as well; however, we've been without electricity since midnight and my reloading presses are in the basement so light is kind of an issue. Guess I'll just read instead.  (The main floor has plenty of windows)

I won't be surprised if I end up in the same situation Jerry. At this point we just have rain starting to turn to ice and wind. A fellar gets pretty dependent on that electericity stuff!

Well, they warned us about that global warming thing, think "they" could be wrong?

I had some friends who were going to that shoot in Grand Island this weekend, anyone know if they shot it?

I don't see how they could have unless it was a lot better IN GI than here

Bat, Global warming is a misnomer imo. Global weather disruption would be a better name. Some places are colder, wetter, drier, hotter than they ever were before. You have a 100 year flood and 2 years later another one. There are just too many humans on this planet and all of the things that we do are heating it up. I worked outdoors for 40 plus years and KNOW it's warmer here in nc than it was. The hurricanes are getting bigger and more often. I do what I can. Recycle and reuse. Fix stuff. Buy from habitat and goodwill stores. Got a lot of used guns too.

PLUS ONE to Balto Ed.

I refuse to call it "Global Warming"    I prefer the term "Global Climate Change"

We're at one end of a Milankovich cycle.  Same as the Medieval warming period, when it was warmer than it is now.  And we're already coasting down to a solar minimum.  Going to take a few years for the oceans to lose the extra energy from the solar peak we just passed thru.  Thus more unpredictable weather for a while.

So when everything starts getting cooler,  what'll folks complain about?

General Jerry, did you get electricity for your birthday?  Hope you didn't have a picnic planned, quite winter like in NE today!

Talked to Blackjack Ketchem who was at the Nebraska state shoot with Mustang John.  Weather kept them from shooting on Saturday but they did shoot on Sunday.

Speaking of losing power, a few years ago I broke into my 401k and had a Generac whole home generator installed. It was a very worthwhile investment. Bought the largest propane tank available. It's kept us comfortable in all the small outages that we've experienced since it was put in. We haven't had a prolonged event yet. It has the ability to prioritize which 220 circuit it energizes which allows a smaller unit to power what needs to run. Of course all the 110 is powered all the time. The heat or ac trumps the hot water heater or drier ie. Does a diagnostic run every Monday at 6:00 pm for 5 minutes. The installers were 2/3rds of the 3 stooges though. I helped them get the unit up on the tall stand they built but they still messed up the cowling and had to come back to replace the damaged part. No complaints though it is noisier than I thought it would be.
Just a minor thread jump but I'm thinking Winchester was the only gun company that recycled it's products. When the 1893 pump shotgun proved prone to frame cracking the improved 1897 was offered in trade to anyone who sent them their 93. Wonder what they did with them?  I almost bought a 93 years ago but it was also cracked so I didn't. Would have been neat to have for it's rarity.

I have 2 generators; a tractor powered one, a smaller one for the mobile command post. The tractor didn't want to start Sunday morning ( I couldn't see any reason to start it on Saturday). About noon I had a great idea; use the smaller generator to run the engine heater on the tractor so that it will start!  ::) Then I realized that the camper generator is stored in the garage and the only way in is through the doors with the electric openers on them.  :P Note to self: store the small generator somewhere else.

Or you could install a Pitsptr door. I can't believe that a builder would build a garage without a human door. What if the car is in the garage with the doors down and no power and there's an emergency and you've got to bug out? "You take chances, Mr Marlowe"

If you were inside it when the power went out you can pull the release and open it by hand.

If it weren't a slant wall building it would be pretty easy to put a door in. As it is, I think it would be more work than it would be worth.  ::)

I built this 'eyebrow' (thats what they're called) to protect my shop doors last year. I had my Home Depot barn painted and found bad wood in the doors. I also built the lower deck. Turned out nice. But I wish it was bigger.
And I was referring to you being locked OUT of the garage, not in and had to bug out.

Sorry, I misread it I guess.
