Title: Krag Mills Belt
Post by: Niederlander on July 08, 2017, 06:37:30 PM
Gentlemen,  I have one of What Price Glory's khaki cavalry model Krag Mills belts on the way.  I'll post pictures as soon as it arrives and I get my grubby little fingers on it!  (I'm excited!)

Ordered it Saturday, was on my doorstep Monday!  This is the sewn one, which is fine with me.  The quality is very nice.  Definitely a keeper.  He has infantry belts now, as well.  Not sure when he'll have blue belts or the all woven belts.  I do know Jerry Lee is on vacation for two weeks.

Price is $58, which seems pretty darned reasonable!

Told myself I'd wait for a blue one, but oh that is tempting!

What Price Glory is certainly becoming the "go-to" company for GAF.  Pitsptr said they're supposed to have the 1874 meat can in the works.  Of course, I'll need the 1878 USMC haversack to put it in, and it goes on and on..........

Took the belt out for a trial run at our cowboy shoot this morning.  Works great!  The loops are still a little tight, but that's to be expected.  Not even close to Chuck's speed on reloading yet, but I've got time to work on it.

On a side note, I re-learned I need to set the Krag's rear sight at five hundred yards for Trail Boss loads at cowboy distances. (I was somewhat puzzled on the first stage until I remembered that!)

Hi Ned

I ended up ordering a Blue Infantry version from S&S Firearms a bit ago.  I figured a blue one would be more Cuba.  I also ordered a US buckle to possibly go with it.  None of the pictures in "Cowboys in Uniform:" show a buckle though.

I dyed mine with Rit. I followed the directions and it has shown to be color fast. It was easy

You can mix the powdered colors before adding them to the water to get a custom color. Add a bit of black dye to the Navy if you want a bit darker blue.
I used RIT dye to dye a bed sheet sky blue to be used as a background cloth for taking portrait shots at one of the NCOWS Conventions in Omaha.

Just to be sure of color fastness, I dipped that sheet in a bath of vinegar to act as a mordant.

If fully loaded, I counted 86 rifle rounds (43 double rows) and 12 pistol rounds.  If the members of the 7th Cav wore these belts at the Little Big Horn at Last Stand Hill, they wouldn't have run out of ammo as quickly as they did, due to their extra ammo being lost when the Cheyenne spooked or shot their horses with the extra ammo in the saddle bags.

Of course if they'd have been using the double row Mills belt, they'd have been using the Krag carbine as well.  ;)

Yes, Major I used Navy. Just followed the directions and have never had any issues with it bleeding into my Khaki 1899 uniform.

I think that about 210 soldiers with about 2,016 combined pistol and rifle ammo (98X210), even with krags, would have been in big trouble facing 1500plus Indians. (assuming all of the other details of the battle remained the same).

Hi

I have a US Mills Belt buckle setting around lonely because the Krag Mills belts don't have buckles on them in Cowboys in Uniform.  I plan on getting a .45/70 belt since I need to order new sights from S&S anyway.  I need the belt with the C closure right?

Thanks

You will be happier with a higher quality belt from What Price Glory

I'll hold off buying until next week then.  I know several of you have wpg.  I have an s&s, but it hasn't seen any action.  I would guess wpg are more durable?

I have one of each, can show you the difference.  My S&S belt will be going on the prize table at the Banquet.  The WPG is a better belt, but I did get three Brigade Championships out of the older belt!

I can't make a direct comparison-I don't remember if I got my tan single row belt from S&S or from Coon Creek. But I just got a blue double row infantry belt from WPG, and it's really nice. And the price isn't that much difference. But of course, if you can manage to snag Drydock's old belt when the prizes start going out, FREE is the best price of all! Also got a set of leggings from WPG, the quality and materials look to be just as good as my Dad's old Navy issued ones. (Which I wore as a 10 year old, but WAAAYY to small for me now).

I was lucky with my Krag Mills Belt.  I was looking on e bay for nothing in particular and noticed that there was a Krag Mills "style" belt up for auction.  It looked quite good to my eyes so I bid on it and got it for $65.00.  It is an original and I think other people were put off by the "style" description. I was darn lucky.

WPG belts are woven loops, just like the orignal Mills belts. Most other replicas on the market are sewn loops and only correct for contractor belts that were made for the Spanish American War. So, it comes down to you making the choice between an authentically constructed Mills belt or a somewhat accurate reproduction of a variation. The woven loops will be stronger in the long run.

I need to get off my butt and get a couple of WPG Mills belts.  I missed out on a prarie belt in the smaller sizes.  Now they just have the biggest size left. >:(

Hi

I just received numerous deliveries from the US Postal Service including a WPG Tan Cavalry Mills belt and bandoleer, an S&S Krag Carbine front sight, another McKeever .45/70 Cartridge box, a Will Ghormley pattern for the Jesse James rig (Schofield) and another box that apparently wasn't cool enough to remember.

The WPG Mills belts are noticeably more durable, and the hardware seems to be about twice as heavy.  I'm considering ordering a blue set too.

O.K. I got the Cavalry belt, there's only one thing to clip the belt to on the bottom of the belt.  How is that supposed to work?  Is there a picture in the McChristain book or the 4th Cavalry book?  I didn't look (again) but I don't remember seeing that.

Later Y'all    ;D

Yes, I bought Tan Cavalry Mills Belt.  One of Dale's pictures shows the tab deal.
