When they started pulling down all those statues and memorials, I wondered what they were going to do with them. I have 25 acres they could put them on :)

I've had a mess of Hondas and Kawis in the past, and one Suzuki. The Suzi had a funky ball and socket type setup on the gear shift, that was always popping loose at the wrong time. That's why I only had one of them. I also had a Harley Panhead I was building from the ground up... until I had some legal issues. It was sell the bike, or go to jail. Many is the time I think I made the wrong choice.

No, I am free, but have no Harley anymore. It was soo close to being finished too. '57 straight leg rigid frame and tank shift, mildly stretched and raked. 10" over springer from a '47 Knuckle. 16" front and rear spoked wheels. '57 large bearing engine. '37 beehive tail light and cat's eye dash from a '37 knuckle. It was almost like Johnny Cash's Cadillac in that song :) I would have been out of jail in 6 months.

Evening all.

Well, the carbs are still on the bike. :-\ By the time I got done running around town doing errands, it was too hot to touch the bike.  104 in the sun, it said.  Anyway, it's an '82 Suzuki GS550L.  My dad bought it in 84 or '85 when the Air Force moved him from North Dakota to Southern California.  He could get from his base to his mom's house in a weekend for $2. ::)
It's been sitting since my mom had her surgery in '95, but the engine's not seized, so I want to fix it up and ride it.

Rodeo went well enough.  Nobody made it through the short round.  And our only local boy in it didn't make 2 seconds.  But, it was a good time, and there were exhibition motorcyclists.  If YouTube will decide to work for me, I'll upload the video I took.  :-\

I took the dog out this morning for a swim and she cut her foot pretty badly.  It bled for 30 minutes before I got her to calm down enough for it to clot a bit.  Now she just keeps licking it.  She's still licking it, but I think it's starting to scab a little.  She won't be going on any long walks for a while, though.

Morning all. The coffee is hot, but it ain't working. It's that Costa Rican stuff I got last week. It tastes good, but I think that those Costa Ricans have such a relaxed environment, they don't feel the need to "Have to wake up". Everybody knows, Folgers don't fool around :)

Been having trouble sleeping at nights. Everytime I start to doze off, them mutts of mine decide that there is some sort of invasion they need to deal with. And if it ain't them, it's the skeeters, or some other bug... usually ticks. So, after 2 hours of this, I give up and go to the leather shop till sun up. I'm getting too old for this stuff... On the other hand, it is cool and quiet in the shop, and I'm getting caught up. Throw a DVD in the laptop, grab a couple JavaMonsters, and tool away.

Beginning to feel like it is really the summer here on the coastal plain.  It was 79 F on the way to work, and expected heat index of 105F.
Probably do some reloading this evening if the garage is less than 95 F!

Afternoon all.

Standard California weather, still.  105 and sunny.

My dog is at the vet right now, getting her foot stitched.  It was still bleeding this morning when I got up, and she split it open more when I got back from work (side note.  She gets really excited when I get back from anywhere.  Even if it's just the bathroom.  ).  We took her in to the vet at 1240, and he said "Yes it needs stitches.  We're pretty full today, so we'll keep her until I can get it done.  It will be sometime between 1430 and 1800."  So much for my afternoon...

I was working on the bike this morning.  Successfully removed the gas tank, only to find I don't have the tool I need to remove the air box.  Seems to be the story of my vehicle-fixing life.  :-\  I'm going to go talk to my neighbor here in the next couple of days, though.  He's built two choppers in his garage already, and he's working on the third.  He's doing it from the ground up, fabricating the frame and everything around a Harley engine he got for free.  He should have the tools.  ::)

Afternoon all.

Weather is supposed to cool down any day now...  Right now it's 100.  Which is better than 105, I guess.

My mother and brother are out picking up 4h rabbits right now.  Those darn things will likely make him $500 richer next month, which is honestly more than I would pay for a creature I could go out and shoot myself, but different stroke for different folks.

Roo, the place I've been working at the past few weeks boards goats, sh**p ( ::) ) and a couple cows.  None of them get along.  Though the pit bull gets along with all of them.

Glad to hear you're recouping Lil Rooster. When they opened up my chest for a biopsy, the idjits somehow deflated a lung, so I had to go through the chest tube route too.

Well, the weather is hot, and unfortunately, so is the coffee. But, that pot should be gone by the time the leather shed has cooled off enough to work. I have one iced coffee left, and it will be enjoyed while finishing off that rifle sling. The first padded thumbhole sling I've done, and it has been an experience. The next one will be smooth sailing ;)

I finally figured out why I wasn't sleeping too good at night. Aside from the bugs, and the dogs going off every time I started to doze, maybe drinking 3 or 4 espressos before bed was a bad idea? Perhaps I should just add more steamed milk...

Normally, I'm right there with ya. Been drinking espressos black for years, with lots of sugar- Cubano style. But, after drinking black coffee all day, that is a lot of extra acid. So, I tend to cut the acid with a little steamed milk, more cappuccino style. I tell you, getting old has it's drawbacks. I don't recommend it ;)

That is just Photobucket's way of trying to make money off of a free account. Now they want you to pay for the privilege of linking to your pictures. If you have a PB account, I suggest you download whatever pics you don't want to lose. I will bet they disappear from  your account soon enough... unless you pay to join. How long did you drain fluids thru the incision sight after it was pulled?

It seems like I was seeping for at least a few days, but it was almost 2 years ago, and I can't be responsible for accuracy over that long a period. I do remember though, that I really didn't have much pain after waking up. I was in the ICU for a day, then picked up my stuff, and walked back to my regular room... which really ticked off the wife. She's a Nurse, and feels she knows more than me. I know if I can do something or not... and if not, I won't admit I was wrong ;)

Tried to shoot a squirrel with my big fish gun once. He was on the ground, and when the dust, dried leaves, flying rocks, etc finally settled, there was no squirrel anywhere to be found. Only reason for trying to shoot the squirrel, was no deer to be found. And my ex had earlier shot a squirrel with her 30-30(head shot, so still edible). New wife doesn't hunt or shoot, so I don't have that kind of "competition" anymore.

The last squirrel I shot, was a while ago. I spotted him at the top of a big Poplar, maybe 60-70 feet from where I was. I had my 22, iron sights, and tagged it. Watched it fall about half way, before it got stuck in the canopy. I can't repeat what I said. It was a beautiful shot though.

Afternoon all.

SAR training today.  We did orienteering the "old fashioned" way, with a map and compass.  Honestly, I like it better than the GPS, since the maps we use are A) the latest USGS topo maps with 40' contours, and B) have landmarks/ survey markers/ roads labeled.   The GPS only gives you a line on a 2D map with no labels, and 200' contours.  :-\

The last squirrel I shot was about four months ago.  I used a 12ga with birdshot.  Unfortunately, I was a little too close, and there wasn't anything edible left.

I was in icu 5 days this time- i have been out 5 days  and still seep thru the blow hole like the Great White. Chnge dressings and tee shirts 2 or 3 times a day.

Slim bout the only rat hunting i have done the last couple years have been common barn rats. I use my Ruger Mk III iron sights. Sort of bought it dir tree rats  and rabbits but haven't yet. So i use a RAT gun for rats. :-)

Went and picked up a new Buck goat for a herd sire. He is only two months old but will learn as he grows. Busy day here.

Gotta make a trip to town today.  Not that i want too. 1/2 hour each way and any delays while there seem to eat up half a day.  Need to change oil and filter in mower. It is all straight forward nothing needs removed first. Just need to do it.

Still 105 in California.  I'm tired of it. :-\  We're talking about going to the coast this weekend, where the weather is supposed to be 65.  We'll see how that pans out.

Ordered new tires for The Eggplant today.  $460 later, and I'll have 2 new tires on Wednesday.  :o  These suckers are expensive!  But, these particular tires are warrantied to 55,000 miles, which means I'll probably replace the truck before the tires.  Then again, maybe I'll take the truck to 500,000 miles.  Ya' never know until you try, i guess.

TK, that's some pricey tires! I get all four on most of my vehicles for that. No 55,000 warranty, either. Mail route, I get 10-15,000 at best, but probably 30,000+ on the others(Unless I get un-repairable sidewall thorn leaks on the trucks).

Summer finally settled in here, forecast mid-upper 90's all week, "heat index" well into the 100s. Dragged the 2 "window shakers" out of storage, blew off the dust with an air hose, stuck them in the windows, and now enjoying nice cool air. One 9,000 and one 10,500 BTU units do a decent job in this 1920's house-unless you're doing a lot of cooking, canning, etc.

Well, they're A) truck tires and B) off-road tires.  The same model tire for my mom's 2010 Explorer would be $650 for a warrantied set of 4.  But since I'm going to be spending the rest of the summer driving up roads covered in sharp rocks, i figure a good tire with a warranty might be good.  It was only $10/tire for the warranty.

Weather is headed for 100 again today.  Yay...

I hate tire warranties, and warranties in general. I always seem to develop a problem that wasn't covered, even though I paid the extra money to get it. Bought tires, and got a nail in the sidewall. Not covered. I can get a good used tire for the cost of some warranties. Bought a nice flatscreen tv for Christmas. The boys got in a flyswatter fight, cracked the glass. Not covered, and no replacement screen was available. But, I will flat wear out a Harbor Freight genny warranty. We use our genny 10-12 hours daily. As long as it blows up within the 2 years, we're good for a new one.

Afternoon all.

Dog is at the vet getting her stitches out after two weeks.  She had been so restless since she got the stitches, since we've only been able to walk a little.  Wednesday was the longest walk we've had in the past two weeks, and it was a mile.  Usually we do 3-10 miles. :-\

Weather is still hot, though we're supposed to go below 100 next week.  The weekend is still forecast for 110.  :o

I'm thinking of going to the range tomorrow morning.  I was "issued" a box of 9mm for SAR( i.e the Sheriff's Office doesn't use 9mm anymore), so I was going to burn through that, as well as break in my new rifle.  We are getting close to deer season, after all.  ::)

I told my nurse wife what I said, and she responded that"For that $2,000 a night, you certainly aren't going to get an attentive nurse to do all that with a smile". I told her that for $2,000 a night, I most certainly could get all that, with a smile, and she'd even wear a cap and white stockings. Afternoon all.

Burned half a box of 280 today.  Got the barrel broken in the new rifle.  Didn't take the 9mm, since we've been placed in a "high fire probability advisory."  In other words, It's 110 with a 10mph constant wind that gusts above 20.  On the off chance that a bullet bounced a piece of steel off a flint and the spark caught, the fire would be 1000 acres before a fire truck could get there (That's basically what happened in 2006, though it was a 5.56mm steel core bullet).  So I figured that the fewer bullets I threw down range, the less likely there will be a fire.  Every little bit helps, right?

Well, it's early, no coffee yet, and I'm in a stormy mood. Dang dogs woke me at 2ish. One of them broke their choker, and he was going at it with one of the others. Grabbing my flashlight, out the door in boxers and no shoes, and my inside dog slips out with me. So now he's tangled up with the first dog. Last time I broke up 2 dogs, I almost lost the tip of a finger and had my face torn open. I was able to break them up this time, without any bloodshed... from me. And I didn't have to dig any holes. Just got another couple hours of sleep, putting me at about 6 total for the last 2 nights.

And to top it off, there is a hack/spammer running amok on this board. Where is the Law in these parts?

Things in California are still hot.  19th day over 100 they said on the radio this morning.  It made it to 101 here.

Yesterday I beat the heat by climbing into the Alps.  It never got above 80.  ::)  I tried to make it to a group of lakes about 6 miles out, but in two hours we'd only made it a third of the way.  Some people travel slower than others.  :-\  We stopped at a lake at the half way point and ate lunch, then came home since my companions were tired.  I'm thinking I'll go do it Saturday by myself.  I travel faster that way.

But, I woke up today with a cold, so that may not happen.   And it's pretty much my last chance to do it this summer, too.  I start working six days a week on Monday.

Well, since nobody else is around, I guess I'll have to start the chow.

Weather is forecast to be below 100 today.  99, but still below 100.  ::)

On my slate today: tanning a squirrel hide, planting some late carrots, planting some late season wheat, and trying to dodge a fever.

A lot of no sleeping is in the air? I laid my head down about 11ish, tossed and turned, my head was too busy workin on a pattern for a holster I'm starting. The guy wants a "Don't Tread On Me" theme for a western style 1911 holster... I sort have sold him on the western style. Somewhere about Midnight it came to me, so off to the shed I went. Grabbed a cold Java Monster, threw in Boardwalk Empire, half a pack of cigs and 3 hours later, I finally had a roughed out pattern to show him. By that time, it was cool enough to sleep.

Just saw this on Face Book,I don't have any details,But it seems that Arcey is in a bad way, Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

Wasn't going to post anything out of respect for my dad Roy Shipley, and I know he wouldn't want people worrying, but I feel that many friends of his have no idea about his sudden dire condition and I think at this time, any positive vibes would be greatly appreciated. Sadly, we have realized he won't be coming home and are just staying by his side, hoping to keep him comfortable...thank you all for your thoughts and for respecting our family's privacy...we love you more than you could ever imagine dad

Just got this info...
I have some really bad news.  I just found out that Arcey is in the hospital.  I just got this from his daughter, Andrea.

"About a month ago they found a spot in his lung that was possibly cancerous, long story short, the biopsy done the other day confirmed small cell lung cancer and it had spread quickly all over plus a tumor on his esophagus which has labored his breathing to the point of needing constant ventilation.  Not much left they can do but try keep the pain to a minimum.

We have decided it would be best to just stop ventilation since we met with the doctors and conditions cannot improve on their own...he will now be on hospice care with only pain meds"

I never knew the man, but you and your family have my deepest sympathy, and will be in my thoughts. I lost my Mom to cancer 25 years ago, and 3 years ago I was also diagnosed with small cell lung cancer, and was lucky enough to catch it early, and see the best doctors in the country. I wish the best for all of you.

I have been thinking about him a lot the past weeks, and didn't say anything just out of respect for his privacy.  My thoughts are with his family, both immediate, and this extended virtual one, as well as his brothers behind the badge.

My chest won't quit shakin'.

Just got back from my couple of month long road trip to find out about Arcey.  Like many here, never got to meet the man face to face, but his presence on this forum spoke volumes about him, and his absence has been missed.  I could only think of one fitting thing to say at his passing, I hope he finds it fitting.

High Flight
By John Gillespie Magee, Jr.

Portions Of This Lovely Poem Appear On The Headstones
Of Many Interred In Arlington National Cemetery,
Patricularly Aviators And Astronauts

"Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds -
and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of -
wheeled and soared and swung high in the sunlit silence.
Hovering there I've chased the shouting wind along
and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air.
"Up, up the long delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace,
where never lark, or even eagle, flew;
and, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
the high untrespassed sanctity of space,
put out my hand and touched the face of God."

Dang it all dust!!

Watch out for that okra, that nasty stuff will kill ya ;)

Well, we had a couple days where the storms come up fast and hard... lots a wind and rain. On the plus side, after it was done last night, we had a clear sky, mild breeze, and it was in the lower 70's inside. Beautiful sleeping weather... and I just couldn't get to sleep! A couple of episodes of Boardwalk Empire (With commentary), and I finally went to sleep about 3 or 4ish.

The main genny died yesterday. Normally they just blow up, but this one decided it wanted to live, it just didn't want to provide any electric. So I ended up bringing the little shop genny over for the cabin, since it used to be the back up before I moved shop into the shed. Beautiful thing about Harbor Freight warranties, work that genny like a dog for a year, trade it in when it dies. Now, y'all can say what you want about Harbor Freight stuff being junk, but we work a genny 10-18 hours a day, 7 days a week.

I might have mentioned to the camp some time back ....I won a GLOCK  :-\

It was April 10, at the range I had volunteered to RO " Ladies Day " It's an open event to ladies only to try the different disciplines
offered.  It has been a yearly thing extremely well attended some 300 women sign up for all over the State, some never have shot before.
I man the Western action stage , and 129 women tried that venue....

The event is rather well sponsored, as I mentioned GLOCK , Kel-Tec, High Standard, Midway, Mossberg , Hoppe's to name some...

Anyway, GLOCK offered 2 Pistols in a Random Drawing , one for Volunteers & and one for attendees ...

My number was chosen  :o  So I receive a voucher for a GLOCK....my choice any Caliber , any model,  Gen. 3 or Gen. 4

now there were some up charges ...
say Gen 3 none,  but Gen. 4  + $35.
want Optics + $135
want  Comp. Model  + $ 235

I opted for the GLOCK 17 Gen. 4  = 9mm large frame so my out of pocket was $37.45 ( $35 + sale tax )

AS I said that was back in April.... They (GLOCK) tell you in small print on the order form ..it can take 20 weeks to receive your gun....
Reason being they don't stock AWARD GUNS cause of the varied options a winning recipient might want.

OK so 16 weeks go by, and my FFL calls ...your GLOCK is here  :D  that was two days ago  ;D ;D paperwork done I walked out with my new GLOCK Tuesday ....

Never owned a Plastic gun ( well not since I was a kid ) this thing is KOOL !

Morning all, coffee is on, and going fast. Long day yesterday, swapping the genny. Drove an hour plus to Macon, wait and wait on the "helpful" HF staff to get around to us. When they are getting to us, they drop a bombshell- There is a $120 "restocking fee". Say WHAT??? They claim that a restocking fee may apply to all returns. In the 7 years we have been doing this, there was never a restocking fee, because the item was not going to be restocked. Well, there goes the money to get a new 1 year extended warranty with it. I argue a bit, give up, and take the new genny and leave the store.

But, it ain't over yet! I call customer service, and wait... and wait... and go around the corner to Subway for lunch while I'm waiting. Just as I get my sammich, the support guy answers the phone. He says that the new manager was wrong to charge me, and will get the District Manager on it. After eating, I go back to the store, and in my booming voice, announce that I just got off the phone. I also accuse the Manager of either being an idiot, or trying to take home my $120. I got my money back, and a new warranty.

Sometimes, the little guy wins one :)

I hear there is a new western movie coming out.  The story line is some 21st Century folks are transported back through time into the old west.  They have with them Glocks, AR's and assault type shotguns.  Maybe there will be a new category coming??   ;)

Kewl, but it's still a plastic gun.  ::) ;)

On the way home yesterday, there were some crows in the road. All but one flew away. I straddled it so I wouldn't run it over with a tire. After I drove past where it was, I couldn't see it in my mirrors. As I was walking out of verk tonight, I saw a wing hanging down from under the Beast. It was stuck in the front suspension.  ::)

I understand....I'm a wood & steel type myself

I would not haul off and buy one ...BUT when they are gonna give me one ...well then, Momma raised no fool ....

At best it is a new toy to entertain,  at worst $500 of trading fodder ....neither is a bad thing  :)

It does  :)   also has 4 inserts  w/ beaver tails  for filling out for big hands, cleaning rod & brush,  & a ez Mag. loader

I think once you run all three mags thru a couple times you will decide to keep it.  Once you disassemble and clean it a couple times you'll find it easy to maintain. Easy on the lube. Arcey showed me the trick to break down. He loved Glocks.
I carry my G22 Gen 3 for work two extra mags and one more in door panel of  jeep.

I traded a rifle for the Glock... i tried to talk the trader out of it, he insisted it is what he wanted. I recently traded one for a AR and i read at another forum he traded it for a Lancaster patterened rifle.  I have just out right sold some for the lack of money and trying to do the adult.

Morning all.

I've been on top of a mountain all week, "getting trained."  Basically, I sat on a stool and listened to the radio while watching for smoke.  Yesterday was my first solo day.  It went well enough.  There was only one smoke in my reporting zone, but my sister-tower across the valley got it called in before I did.  ::)

Today is my day off, then I'm on a six day week starting tomorrow.  Hello overtime.  ;D
I'm going to take my dog for a good long walk now.

Sure! I'll be right over! Let's see.....14MPH in high gear.....Might take a couple of weeks.....

Delivered the tire to the local farm tire outfit, after hours. They'll find it in their way Monday morning. Maybe even recognize it from fixing it last year, about this time.

Got home from town to find steak on the grill, and sweet corn from the garden, and pan of brownies about to come out of the oven. Almost was to full to do any more work, BUT, her Trailblazer had only 3 speeds left on the A/C blower.(The lowest 3,of course. Speed 1 &2 NEVER go out.) Had to replace both the resistor and the plug and wires, the old plug was fried onto the resistor. Now has all 5 speeds. For now at least. It's the 3rd time I've replaced it in 7 years, but it's about the only thing that ever goes wrong on it..

Top of the Mornin Y'all. Seems like everybody is staying busy, and it looks like I am too. I took on a pair of holsters for a Son, and one for his Dad for Christmas. Just finishing them off now... well, after I get the laundry done. Had a friend at the pawnshop ask for a holster, so I cranked out a quicky for her Ruger 38 while I waited for the first two to dry. Now I have one more to do after them, and two more requests after that. At this rate, I'm going to need an A/C unit in the shed, so I can work during the day! This "Hobby" is becoming a full time job...

Evening all.  I've got some water on the coals for those wanting a late night cup of coffee.

Long day today at work.  We had a lot of smoke from Six Rivers and Modoc forests blow in overnight.  Normally I've got about 40 miles of view from up there, but today it was maxing out at about 15 miles.  One lookout farther south had to go out of service at 3 o'clock because he couldn't see the base of his own mountain.  And I had to sit up there for none hours.  Not only that, but the other guy up there with me was too hungover to do much more than sit in the bed and moan until noon.   :-\

But, Tuesday I get my own tower on the other side of the valley, so I'm kind of excited for that.

They got a bed in those smoke towers? While I never been up in one, the ones they have here in Missouri don't have more than enough room for a couple of chairs I think. But they rarely, if ever use them anymore.

I had never been to the one on St Marys between Corvallis and Stevensville, from Hwy 93 it looks big enough to house the Missoula smoke jumper squad. The ones i have been two lower Bitterroot East and West Fork were small like you say. Usually a camp set up near tower. The one old one, the smoke/lightning watcher could sack out in and had a coleman stove. This has been over 20 years ago since i hVe been to them. Closer to 25 years ago.

Cooled down to the 80's here now

I have had my most active day since late May. See how tomorrow goes. I can only praise the almighty, for his hand and of course cooler temps and low humidity he had provided.

Then pretending to being on a tv cooking competion this eveningi burnt my hand. Hot open face turkey sands and mashed taters.     Yum!

See ya'll next month
