Title: Burnishing edge on thin leather?
Post by: Oregon Bill on October 12, 2016, 01:10:50 PM
I am trying to make a hatband out of 2/3 ounce veg-tanned cowhide. It may just be too thin, but if I can make it work, how does one dress/burnish the edge on such thin, flexible leather?

What I've done is to lightly burnish it with a piece of cotton fire hose but you can use canvas or something similar. When it's burnished, it has a slight mushrooming out so I then lay it flat and burnish it again from the back to flatten it back down. I suppose you could also just tap it slightly with a small cobbler's hammer or something when damp to do the same thing.
