Title: Lyman GP pistol
Post by: Kent Shootwell on January 27, 2016, 03:43:04 PM
I did a couple of kits and decided to make some changes on one. Cutting the barrel to half round required a new rib so I made a brass thimble to go with the trigger guard then cast a nose cap in place of the steel one. Fileing off some of the marking seemed to be in order as well.

Much better! I like that half round barrel. How much different is the balance?

Those are some lovely mods. They really liven up the old GP.

Beautiful modification.  The only other thing I would have done is swap out those sights.

Well looky here, Martha.  Two double taps in one day on two different sites.

I guess that makes me bilingual or somethin'.

I'd change the sights if they didn't work so well for me.

Kent,

You did a very nice job!
I see no issue with the sights (myself).
If they work well for you, and are correct to the period... you just can't get any better than that.
My best,
 Blair

It's not like using a telegraph key. ;D

Very fine work Kent.  I like the modifications.  They look like they should shoot well.  How do they handle?  What kind of loads at what distance?

Pony Express, the hall round does feel a bit lighter at the muzzle. The standard pistol weighs 2.7 lbs. and the half round weighs 2.6 lbs. so not much difference really. Both are 54 calibre with belt hooks.
Tsalagidave, I shoot 30 grains of 2fg with pillow ticking on a .535" ball. From sand bags it shoots to point of aim at 25 yards near as well as my rifle off hand. Off hand I'm happy shooting tin cans at half that distance. The half round gun as best I have seen shots as well but I only get to shoot against it. Silly me I gave it to a friend and he only lent it to me for the picture. We did have a plinking match once and were shooting at a brick at 165 yards. I hit it on the second shot and he never did, of course I put mine away and wouldn't  shoot any more!

Kent; That's the only thing to do once you get a "horse shoe" shot like that! 8) 8) 8)

Very nice, I'm thinking of building one, I hope it turns out half as nice as the job you did.
