Title: A little help
Post by: Texlee on January 05, 2015, 12:18:47 PM
Hello gentlemen

Yesterday a friend of mine came across one of the mighty 8 gauges in excellent condition and is snatching it up. The question of the day though is, are any of you familiar with any load data for them? He's planning on buying some brass shells for it but hasn't been able to turn up any load data as of yet and since this is my goto site for all things old and black powdery I fogured I'd ask you guys. Any info is greatly appreciated!

My book lists 7 drams (1 dram = 27.34 grains) and 2 ounces of shot. Also note your chamber length, it could be 3", 3 1/8" or 3 1/4" in an eight bore. So wads must be stacked to match your gun. I'd recommend 1 fg or 1 1/2 fg Goex or the same with Swiss if you want more power.

If you look on the L C Smith Collectors Association web page there have been a few threads in the past on loading the 8 ga.  A big challenge will be finding 8 ga hulls.  LCSmith.org

I am thinking that you will have to find hulls from industrial "kiln-gun" ammo?

Sir Charles:  I believe that is the source I have seen on the LCSCA website.  There were 34 LC Smith 8 gauge guns built and 2 of the members of the LCSCA own  25-30 of them.

Thanks guys for the info! My buddy decided he's gonna order up a box of brass shells from rockymountaincartridge.com and then go from there. I'll steer him towards the links you guys provided.

FYI a few more LC Smith 8 guages have surfaced the total number produced is now up to 50.   A new records search has been completed.  Still not many out there.
