I'm not sure where to post this, so I thought I'd put it here. I apologize if it's in the wrong place.
I happened to run across your organization while looking for an outfit for SASS. It seems interesting. I was wondering though if someone in my position could join. I'm a disabled veteran of OIF confined to a wheelchair. How would that interfere with activities?

As for how the wheel chair would affect you it would more depend on the range the shoot was at.

The best part of what we do is around the fire in the evenings! I suspect you have sufficient store of stories/legends/fairy tales/yarns/salty sea chanteys to tell. (remember to ask Ned about Baby Ducks . . .)
As for the shooting, we've had injured folks run the course of fire from a Utility vehicle. Depending on the range, as Delmonico has said, a pusher can certainly be drafted from the ranks if needed!

Where are you located, CAVU45? Most of our activities up to now are centered in the Midwest, although there's been talk of trying to get a Muster going in Montana..

Thanks for the replies, gents. I still have some use of my legs. I drive my own truck with little problem. I live in Central Indiana. I'm assuming that "Grand Muster" is the GAF equivalent of the SASS End of Trail? Is there a group close to Indiana that may be having a muster that I could check out?

Yes, Grand Muster is the equivalent of SASS End of trail, except considerably smaller.
The Illinois State Muster is the last Sunday of this month, in Rockport Ill.

I haven't actually shot there, but have shot with some of them at the Grand Muster in Nebraska. Should be a good shoot. You can PM GW Strong for more details, or maybe he'll show up here soon.....but he's a school Principal, so he may be a *bit* busy just this time of year. He's the Illinois Commander for GAF now.

Well now, do you have any old Milsurp bolt actions? Double action revolvers? Cowboy type guns? You might be surprised what works with us!

The only thing close is a repro Colt 1851 Navy and an old (in pieces) 03A3, which is out of the era for the group. Everything else is modern, mostly polymer and aircraft grade aluminum. I've finally about had my fill of the new stuff and am turning my sites to older guns, especially now that I can't run and gun with the pups. I'm planning on turning my 03A3 into my version of the Scour Rifle concept by Jeff Cooper. I also want to build a few BP rifles.

CAVU45, sounds like time to trade in some of that plastic and aluminum for some walnut and steel. Since you're asking about the 1884 uniform, of course a trapdoor or Krag would be nice, but remember, while most of our members stay with US equipment, the foreign stuff is welcome too! I shoot a Lebel a lot, but they're a bit scarce, it seems. But a Hex receiver Mosin Nagant, or most any small ring Mauser would get you in the military classes. And Remington Rolling Blocks armed about 2/3 of the armies of the world at one time or another.

Ha! You're probably right. I still have about four rifles to knock out before calling it quits on the modern stuff. It'd drive me nuts to leave boxes of parts just laying around. I love the old rolling blocks. Was the Krag used during the late Indian War period? I didn't think there were enough in production till around or after the Spanish-American War. Do you reload for your guns? Seems like it could get pricey to shoot older guns with obscure calibers.

The Krags didn't really figure in the Indian wars, as it was just a little late for that. The Spanish-American War was really sort of the Krag's debut. Pony's right about the Rolling Block. It was pretty much the AK47 or the FAL of it's day. About the only place it didn't get used much is here! Hope you find something you like and come play the game with us!

We most all reload, but happily these tend to be very easy calibers to deal with! I don't think there's an easier round to load than the the .30 Krag, unless its the .45-70. There's a great video of Ned around here somewhere, going thru a course of fire with his Rolling Block.

I'd have to say the .45-70 is an EXTREMELY easy cartridge to load for (at least with the modern bore size). You can put just about any powder and bullet combination together and it will shoot well. I've found the same thing with the .50-70, although choice of bullets isn't nearly as extensive. I would suggest you reload, or you won't be able to shoot nearly as much as you'll want to!

For our matches, reloading is a must, since commercial ammo suitable for our steel targets is almost non-existant, even for the 45-70. For the black powder rounds, most can be loaded to their original specifications, but the smokeless rounds have to be downloaded with cast bullets, to about 1300fps. Trailboss is the powder of choice for most GAF shooters(or at least it was when you could pick and choose your powders, now it's what you can find, not what you want). You can load 11-12 grains under the standard weight cast bullet in about any full size, 30-32 caliber military caliber and be good to go. For 6.5 or 7mm, or something like a 30-30, well, you'd have to experiment some for those. Some use it in their 45-70s, but I only use the real smokey stuff in mine, so I can't vouch for their loads.
