I'm trying to come up with a plinking load for my .45 Schofield. The CAS Frontier Iron folks recommended 150-160gr RNFP bullets. I've found 160gr bullets on the web but nothing lighter. Anyone know a source for 150 gr lead bullets? In the past I used 240gr RNFP bullets over 6 gr of Win 231. For the lighter bullets I planned to use 5.5 gr of Win 231. That seems like a lot of empty space in such a large case. Is that going to cause ignition problems? Should I switch powders?

.454 roundball is right about 140gr.
Have you tried roundball?

240gr is all I've tried. How accurate is the roundball?

There are a couple of Big Lube designs at 155 gr and 170 gr. For cases, try the .45cowboy Special.
Roundball is a viable option. To be SASS legal there has to be lead visible beyond the casemouth.

I like a .454 roundball over either a wonder wad and a case full of 3f, or a .454 roundball lubed with Lee liquid alox over a .45 acp load of American Select or WW 231. Both in the Schofield case. Ball loaded just past half way with the case crimped over the curve of the ball.

I found 160gr bullets here http://www.shop.clarksbullets.com/45-Colt-160-gr-45160.htm for a reasonable price. Will I be OK with my light charge (5.5gr) of Win 231 without a wad? My Schofield won't tolerate black powder.

For the 160 gr bullet, Hodgdon starts with 6.5 gr 231 to top out at 9.0gr. I wouldn't put any wads in myself.

Thanks Sir Charles, the Hogdon data was exactly what I needed. According to the recoil calculator, that should give me about 60% of the recoil I'm getting with my 240gr load.

Try Trail Boss powder, and check the Hodgens chart they give alot of loads you are asking about. I have shot Unique for 40 years until I found Trail Boss, and now use it in almost everything I shoot. Takes up the space in the larger cases, is no dirtier than Unique and is just as accurate at the ranges we all like to shoot.

Would there be any real advantage to using Schofield brass?
