Being a newbie to the sport of CAS, can I put this on my belt and not be drummed out?

No, it is forbidden. Send it to me and I will dispoe of it for you. ;D There should not be a problem, Coffin handle or coke bottle handle (looks like a cross between the two) are apropriate. The question is what do you have for a sheath? Since the handle and the sheath are about the only thing anyone else will see.

as others have noted style wise it's a good copy of a period Sheffield - if the blade is stainless it is "technically" incorrect but for most CAS activities tain't no one gonna say nothing....

They may not have the resources or the proper licenses and authority to manufacture a proper leather sheath for it.
Send it to me, . . . I'll research it properly, . . . get a committee to make sure, . . . grain feed the steer for the leather, . . . and call you when it is done.

Looks like a pretty good replica of a Samuel Bell Bowie. Bell, of Knoxville, TN, specialized in slim Bowies with (usually) coffin handles and blades resembling the Scottish dirk, often with ornamental filework on the spine. Yours looks like a good one.

It's got the treeth on the back for figfhtin,you can grab your aponents blade,especially if that side of the guard is bent or curled over.Get one of these from Amazon..

Your knife looks like a relative of mine, pictured above. Mine is a Sam Bell copy by Hanwei. I replaced the scabbard pictured with one of my own made 'ensuite' with my gun rig. Wear it if you like, but I'm here to tell ya', two six shooters, 25 rounds of .45 LC and a big Bowie keeps a fellow well anchored, not to mention the 14 round 12 gauge belt.

OK...not to offend...but about how thick is that blade?
I'm thinking that a blade that long would have to be pretty substantial if
it was intended to be put to practical use. Otherwise, wouldn't that just be
the equivalent of an oversized steak knife? I'm thinking that most period
knives would have to be able to be pressed into service as some sort of camp knife, right?
Thoughts?

I've been reading a LOT of knife books the past two years. The last one was Volume 2 of The Shining Time put out by Track of the Wolf. It appears that buffalo hunters carried butcher knives. In general, EVERYBODY did. I also read Carl Russel's book on Mountain Man equipment, most of the pictures in it were butcher knives too. I don't think that our ancestors used knives as pry bars as much as we tend to though.
Just my $0.02 and worth damn near that much. I just glued up an 8 inch Green River butcher knife to some Maple scales for my 27 year old boy. I'm also working on the scabbard for my Cumberland Bowie,

I can't speak for Flatapple's blade, but mine is nearly 5/16" thick at the bolster. But I confess: this knife has little practical use! The first and last occasion that I thought it would be useful, was in the butchering of a moose. The blade, though razor sharp, is definitely the wrong shape for literally any cutting jobs, unless you are letting the life out of some critter. A butcher knife is WAY more practical.
And I think the design may be a relic of the Civil War era, or even prior. There may have been a few who carried such a knife in the era we attempt to depict in CAS, but it is more appropriate for the Plainsman era.
But Flatapple: it is a lovely knife!

Flatapple, I do believe you could win a fight just by showing that monster!I know if somebody was to come after me with a knife like that, I'd be tempted to just shoot myself and save him the trouble. I does seem like hanging that on your belt would tend to lower one's center of gravity. If you're looking for a good laugh, just send it to me and I'll take a picture of it mounted on my belt and dragging on the ground. I'll send it back afterwards ........ eventually
