Can't believe it's December already. Remember when a year was a long time?

Never met Ten Sleep - but I know from these pages that he was held in high regard and is still missed by some good people.

Today is/was my folks wedding anniversary Dec. 1 , 1929  it was a Sunday also , 84 years ago...
They saw two World Wars and the Great Depression together and so much more.
Dad was born just 6 months after the Wright Brothers 1st. flight and saw the Challenger Disaster unfold.
They saw the Moon Landings, Korea, and Kennedy assassination.
In fact they were there at the Bayfront Park in Miami, Florida and saw the attempt on President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt
and Chicago's Mayor Anton Cermak was mortally wounded.
Witnessed Vietnam, Bay of Pigs and the Nixon Scandal, and the assassination attempt on Ford.  They saw a B actor become one of the most impacting presidents in American history. I might add they saw the assassination attempt on him as well...
Dad would be 110 and Mom 104 ....

Sorry...I got a bit nostalgic on you  :-\   but yeah !  I remember when a year was a long time,  and life time was .....

Mornin all, coffee and tea are ready!

Seems like the older you get the faster time moves. When you are young it seems like it takes forever for something to get here, once your older you wonder how it got by you so fast.

A good man Slim, I got a hold of him that one time you had the storm and weren't one for 3 days.   The folks at the Redgranite town hall gave me his number.

Talked to litl roo a few minutes ago, was in western Indiana, got him a weather up-date and he's going to take 80, we may meet up for coffee this evening or tomorrow.

Say hello to ROO and Montana if you get to see them and wish them well in Montana.

Howdy y'all,

Gettin' my rest from the busy week-end. They can have the cyber-Monday biz, I'll get what's leftover on Tues.

Saw the 60 Minutes segment they had last nite on the "delivery drones" info. was new to me too. New warehouses they've built recently have "picking robots" already. Least them little buggers don't complain 'bout how sore their feet are. My warehouse is still labor intensive & have to talk to a lot of 'em.

Prayers up for those folks who are grieving loved ones during the holiday season, have some I've lost during this season as well.

Arcey, hope you kick that nasty crud soon & feelin' better.
Safe travels 'Roo
Storm to come in tamarraw, windy all day today. Dreaded flakes just in time for my commute to work, TG for the Jeep.

Too late for coffee, and it's probably cold anyway, but I'll take a cup or two.

So, today counted as......sucky, for lack of a better term.

We woke up with a layer of ice on everything outside (including my nose, which was in my uninsulated bedroom....), but cold aside, had a decent first part of the morning.  We had our family Bible study in the warm living room, had our cups of coffee, and breakfast.  My dad went off for work, and I got my homework ready for classes in the city today.  I just finished stapling my Chemistry report together, when a call came over the police/fire scanner for, "671, White Oak Road in Trinity Pines, for an elderly female, non-responsive, and not waking up."  That happens to be my grandmothers address.  We called my dad on the cell phone, and he called his brother who stays with grandma.
While we were waiting for my dad to cal back, we hear the fire department get on scene, and cancel the ambulance.....as well as call for a coroner.  Seconds later, my dad calls back on the phone saying that, grandma has passed to the great hunting grounds in the sky.
This all happened at 8:30 a.m.  Dad rushed home (fifteen minute walk) and packed the whole family in the car, to head over there, hopefully before the coroner got there.  We did, with ten minutes to spare, and watched her rolled away.
At the request of the family (who were all up at grandmas from Nevada and Arizona, to attend the court hearing in the murder case of my uncle) we stayed a while.......and didn't walk back in the door until just passed 9:30 p.m.

She was 78, and had resided in the Pines since 1998, having owned the property since 1966.  She has four surviving children, and more grandchildren than I care to count at the moment.  She was born in Texas in 1935, and moved with her family to Tulare California in 1937.  From there she moved to Fremont California, and eventually to Weaverville California.  She died in her sleep last night.

R.I.P. Jackie Jackson.

We got all kinds of precipitation yesterday. It is now frozen.
'Tis 30 and overcast. "Periods of drizzle and freezing drizzle in the morning. Light rain also possible in the morning. Then occasional light rain and drizzle in the afternoon. Areas of dense fog reducing visibilities to less than 1/4 mile at times. Highs in the lower 40s. East wind 5 to 10 mph shifting to the southeast in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation 80 percent."

Didn't Mary Ann and Gilligan get in trouble over some weed a few years ago?

Well first trip didn't get it done, our DMV runs real smooth as long as you don't go the last or the first day of the month, Rita doesn't though, took the papers and money she gave me, found out the sales tax thing was on the desk, she forgot to leave the insurance card but I asked about it and she brought it back, got to get a washer out of the shed later, for a friend of hers, rats, most of the day lost to things I didn't want to do. ::)

Been in this pile ah bricks a long time ‘n I ain’t never hadda turtle in there. A couple three snakes. Birds may come ‘n go. Squirrels smell peanuts for the Blue Jays ‘n sneak in. That’s the first turtle. Guess ‘e wandered in when the door was up ‘n got caught in there when the door was dropped. Put ‘im outside out the way ‘n he was gone when I got back.

Prolly did, Buck. If 'e was stayin' it duh beach they'd ah had a werld wide man hunt for 'im if unpaid room tax was involved. Call the SWAT team even. And the dogs.

Went out ta get the mail 'n the turtle was waitin' on me it the box, couple feet from the street. Dumbazz went the wrong way. Moved 'im ta the back 'n pointed 'im in the right direction.

Turkey soup sounds good. We're gonna drop o'er thirty degrees, 'cordin' to the guessers, come Saturday. Gonna be nice, 'round fifty, but it ain't gonna feel like it when Friday's supposed ta be in the mid seventies. With that in mind I got what I needed for chicken soup when I went ta the off site pantry this mornin'.

Just got home, it 1 below & windy. My regularly scheduled doctor appointment turned into 8 hours in the hospital for fluids & observation.  Showed up the running 103 degrees & the doctor was worried about some kind of infection so took blood & urine samples but found no sign of infection. Blamed the fever on dehydration & over exertion.

Good news is that over exertion stuff is over for a while - our drama season ended today. We came in 3rd at the district & only 1st goes on to state.

Glad you & Mrs . made a safe crossing  :)

My Wife is madder than two wet cats tied together ... her new Washing Machine ( 2 1/2 months old under warranty) fritz-ed up she called the Maytag hotline last week
and they said they'd send repairman out between 1 & 5 Tuesday 12/3/13 ( turns out it's contracted to All Service) The dude shows
not between 1-5 but at 7 PM (my wife hung around all day for the guy ) so he said its the Circuit Board, he does not have the part.
But he''ll have it overnight-ed and promises to come yesterday ( Thurs.  12/5 ) between 8 and Noon.
She annoyed , she has to stay home yet another day.... so the DUDE does not show by 12 so @ 1PM she calls to see if he is still coming..
The Service contractor operator said "WE were supposed to call and say'n the part was in "  >:(  WTH ! The dude said he'd be there and nothing about calling , besides UPS did not arrive with it until 6:37 PM an a call would have been pointless as ALL Service only has operators answering 8-5 EST and your call is very important to us please call back between 8 & 5 EST.
She got a surly operator to boot, and re scheduled for Monday the 9th.  ( a 3rd Day she'll have to take off, to be here !  >:( )
SHE IS PISSED ! they told her "the MAYTAG Dealer sold her a defective Product ."
So in effect All Service dished both the authorized dealer and MAYTAG....

I call the Dealer & he is Pissed too, and he called MAYTAG , I don't know what they are doing about it.... but the best the Dealer could do was have another Maytag repairman out on Tues. the 10 ( he said ALL Service would get paid anyway by Maytag because they ordered the part and were assign the warranty repair )
ALL Service Customer Service is the worst , I called them myself, got some Hispanic Bi*ch who could care less and she repeated to me  "WE were to call them to say the part arrived "  and hung up on me !
My question was " Why didn't the overnight-ed part go to him rather than us, then he know it was in and better still if it was the correct part" !
Hell, I don't know what's the correct circuit board for a new Maytag Machine, besides its sealed in box ! with nothing but part #
and UPS Label . Not only that but the fricking UPS Driver did not even bother to drive back, but left it up at gate which was wide open.
If we had not happen to see him pull up , it would have been out there at the gate all night  ::)

ASS HATs ...the whole lot of them ....  >:(   "rant over"

*becomes thoughtful, but scraps idea of giving a wise remark*

At least our heater repairman was okay....he said it would take about two hours to fix, but due to difficulties with his equipment, it ended up taking six.  He was a nice guy though.

Glad ya' got through safe, Roo.

I would call Maytag myself and tell them i would never buy another one of their products and you are going to tell everyone you know the same.  When they give you they hire their work contracted, tell them you don't give a damn their lousy decision in who they hired cost you plenty.  And when you call, ask for the CEO and when they say they want to know why tell them you want to tell him what a lousy product he makes.  You won't get him, but who you get will most likely jump several levels right off.

I doubt you are the first to have trouble and if they really cared they'd have been doing something about it already. ;)

Disembodied voices in the ‘HEY! Loft’ sed it hit 79°. Windows were closed when it hit 71° in the back hall. That’s a plenty. End up with fans runnin’ at nighty-nite time.

Done my errands:

Sam’s parkin’ lot. Nice weather. Windows down. Park the station wagon ‘n a bird lands on the mirror.

“Hey, bird. Good ta see ya. Gonna ask kindly ya don’t evacuate whilst yer there.”

Looks at me.

“Nothin’ in here ta feed ya.”

Looks like she might wanna come in ‘n see if I’m holdin’ out on ‘er. Put the window up, that’ll spook ‘er. Didn’t werk. Close the hole in the roof – just in case. Still there. Switched the mirror adjustor ta the left ‘n moved it ‘round. Didn’t phase the bird. Shut it off ‘n got out. Bird rode the door out ‘n back shut. No, I didn’t slam it – like my birds. Watched me walk off.

Went in. Got dope from Martha. Hot dog combo from the snack place. Saved a hunka bread. Got back ta the station wagon – no bird. Was gonna find a Ford ta toss it on fer the bird ta eat offa.

Head ta the tobacco shop. All kindsa police ‘n fire stuff goin’ by with the lights ‘n noise. Get ta the tobacco shop ‘n they’s all there. Looked like some ole gal jumped the curb ‘n tried ta make the place a drive in. She’s talkin’ ta the cops with ‘er hands well as ‘er mouth. Quite animated, lookin' kinda wired.

Camera’s sittin’ ‘ere on the desk whilst I’m out seein’ all this neat stuff. T’was full when I went ta shoot the turtle t’other day. It’s ready ta go ‘n back out in the station wagon now. Too late.

We've got about 4" of the evil white stuff on the grass here, not so much on the drive, though.

Arcey, the squirrels been keeping me busy. Birds are getting left overs because of them. Feeder I set out to try and keep them out of the bird's stuff hasn't done what I was hoping. got three blacks and a large gray terrorizing the place. Monin' y'all.  It's about 25 right now, with about eight inches of the white stuff.  Makes the mountains look real pretty.....and the ambulance workers check.   Yesterday I counted 15 car crashes paged over the radio, and three today.  Our local ambulance crew has five total trucks, and serves an area the size of New Hampshire......with enough mountain terrain that if it were flattened out, it would be about 100 square miles larger  than Texas. :o  Needless to say, they are in overdrive of overdrive.    Good news is, it's supposed to melt in the next two or three days.  Than again, how fully do you trust the weather man....?

Intended to be brief. Not intended to minimize nor disrespect by omission others suffering the attack.

Battleships of Pearl Harbor.

Maryland – Newport News, VA – 1921 - She was moored at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese struck on 7 December 1941, but received relatively minor damage. Following repairs and overhaul, Maryland operated with Task Force One off the U.S. West Coast in 1942, deploying to the South Pacific later in the year. She took part in operations to capture the Gilbert and Marshall Islands in late 1943 and early 1944, employing her sixteen-inch guns in the pre-invasion bombardments of Tarawa and Kwajalein.

In June 1944, Maryland again participated in pre-invasion gunnery, this time against Saipan. During this operation, she was torpedoed by a Japanese aircraft, necessitating a trip to Pearl Harbor for repairs. The battleship returned to action for the Palaus operation in September 1944. During the Leyte invasion in October, she bombarded enemy positions ashore and fired on Japanese warships during the Battle of Surigao Strait. While operating off Leyte in late November, Maryland was damaged by a "Kamikaze" suicide plane.

Maryland was repaired in time to participate in the Okinawa operation during March and April 1945, was again hit by enemy air attack on 7 April, but remained in action for another week. She then went to the West Coast for overhaul. This work was completed in early August, but the Pacific War ended before she could return to the combat zone. After spending the last months of 1945 transporting servicemen home from the mid-Pacific, Maryland went to Bremerton, Washington, for inactivation. She was decommissioned in April 1947 and remained in "mothballs" until July 1959, when she was sold for scrapping.

Tennessee – New York, NY – 1920 - Tennessee was one of eight battleships present when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Moored inboard of USS West Virginia (BB-48), she was hit by two bombs, which damaged two of her four gun turrets, and was scorched by burning oil from the sunken USS Arizona. In late December, after temporary repairs, Tennessee steamed to the Puget Sound Navy Yard, Washington, for an overhaul. From February through August 1942, she operated off the U.S. west coast, then briefly went to Pearl Harbor before returning to Puget Sound for extensive modernization.

With her appearance completely changed and her weapons, combat systems and protection considerably enhanced, Tennessee emerged from the shipyard in May 1943. She almost immediately moved up to the Aleutians area, where her 14-inch guns bombarded Kiska when that island was invaded in August. During the next year, from November 1943 into September 1944, she participated in bombardments of Tarawa, Kwajalein, Eniwetok, New Ireland, Saipan (where she was damaged by Japanese counter-fire), Guam, Tinian, Anguar and Pelieu. In October, Tennessee's guns pounded the Leyte invasion area as U.S. forces returned to the Philippines, and, on the night of 24-25 October, she helped sink the Japanese battleship Yamashiro in the Battle of Surigao Strait.

After a Stateside overhaul, Tennessee supported the Iwo Jima operation in February and March 1945, firing nearly 1400 fourteen-inch and over 6000 five-inch shells at targets on the small, but fiercely defended island. Beginning in late March, she bombarded Okinawa. Hit by a suicide plane on 12 April, Tennessee remained in action until 1 May, when she went to Ulithi for repairs, then returned to Okinawa to continue her gunfire support during June. In July and August, she operated in the waters off China. Following Japan's surrender, the battleship took part in the occupation effort before returning to the United States via the Cape of Good Hope, arriving at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, Pennsylvania, early December 1946. Through the next year, she underwent the "mothballing" process and was decommissioned in February 1947. USS Tennessee was part of the Atlantic Reserve Fleet for twelve more years and was sold for scrapping in July 1959.

California – Mare Island, CA. – 1921 - When Japanese carrier planes raided Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, she was badly damaged by torpedoes and bombs, slowly settling to the harbor bottom over the next few days. Her salvage, repair and modernization represented a major undertaking by the Pearl Harbor and Puget Sound Navy Yards and was not completed until January 1944.

Over two and a half years after she was sunk, California reentered combat, providing heavy gunfire support for the invasions of Saipan, Guam and Tinian during June and July 1944. In October and November, she took part in the Leyte Campaign, including the 25 October 1944 Battle of Surigao Strait, history's last fight between opposing battleships. In January 1945, California participated in the Lingayen Gulf invasion. Damaged by a "Kamikaze" suicide plane on 6 January, she remained in action for more than two weeks before steaming to the U.S. for repairs and an overhaul.

California returned to the Western Pacific in June 1945, in time to take part in the final stages of the Okinawa campaign. She covered occupation activities in the wake of Japan's surrender, then sailed for the Atlantic by way of the Indian Ocean and the Cape of Good Hope. After her arrival at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in December 1945, the battleship was generally inactive until her formal decommissioning in February 1947. After twelve years in the Reserve Fleet, USS California was sold for scrapping in July 1959.

Pennsylvania – Newport News, VA – 1916 - When Japan attacked on 7 December 1941, Pennsylvania, flagship of the United States Fleet, was in drydock at the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard. Her relatively light damage was repaired over the next few months, and she operated along the U.S. west coast and off Hawaii until October 1942. Following an overhaul that significantly updated her secondary battery of 5" guns and added many anti-aircraft machine guns, Pennsylvania went to Alaskan waters, where she participated in the recapture of Attu in May 1943 and Kiska in August.

In November 1943, Pennsylvania bombarded Makin during the amphibious assault on the Gilbert Islands. She repeated this role a few months later at Kwajalein and Eniwetok, and in June and July 1944 at Saipan, Tinian and Guam. Her guns supported landings in the Palaus in September 1944 and at Leyte in October. When the Japanese Navy responded vigorously to the latter operation, Pennsylvania helped to destroy part of the enemy fleet in the Battle of Surigao Strait.

In January 1945, Pennsylvania took part in the Lingayen Gulf invasion. Freshly returned to the combat zone after another overhaul, she was seriously damaged by a Japanese aerial torpedo off Okinawa on 12 August 1945, the last major Navy ship to be hit during the Second World War. Too old for retention in the post-war fleet, Pennsylvania was repaired only enough to fit her for target duty. She served in that capacity during the July 1946 Bikini atomic bomb tests. Subsequently moored at Kwajalein for studies of residual radioactivity, USS Pennsylvania was scuttled at sea on 19 February 1948.

West Virginia – Newport News, VA – 1923 - West Virginia's base was moved to Pearl Harbor in 1940, and she was there on 7 December 1941, when the Japanese attacked with an overwhelming force of carrier aircraft. In that raid, the battleship was hit by two bombs and at least seven torpedoes, which blew huge holes in her port side. Skillful damage control saved her from capsizing, but she quickly sank to the harbor bottom. More than a hundred of her crew were lost. Salvaged and given temporary repairs at the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard, in April 1943 West Virginia steamed to the West Coast for final repair and modernization at the Puget Sound Navy Yard.

The battleship emerged from the shipyard in July 1944 completely changed in appearance, with a wider hull, and massively improved anti-aircraft gun battery. West Virginia arrived in the Pacific combat zone in October, and soon was participating in pre-invasion bombardment of Leyte, in the Philippines. On 25 October, as a force of Japanese battleships and smaller vessels attempted to make a night attack on the landing area, she was one of the ships that stopped them in the Battle of Surigao Strait, the last time in World history when battleships engaged battleships with their big guns.

Subsequently, West Virginia took part in operations to capture Mindoro, Lingayen Gulf, Iwo Jima and Okinawa, using her sixteen-inch guns to support U.S. ground forces. On 1 April 1945, while off Okinawa, she was hit by a Japanese Kamikaze plane but was able to remain in action, continuing her bombardment duties there into June. After Japan's capitulation, West Virginia supported the occupation effort until mid-September. She participated in Operation "Magic Carpet" during the last part of 1945, bringing home veterans of the Pacific war. Inactive after early 1946, she was decommissioned in January 1947. Following twelve years in the Pacific Reserve Fleet, USS West Virginia was sold for scrapping in August 1959.

Nevada - Quincy, MA  - 1916 - The only battleship able to get underway during the 7 December 1941 Pearl Harbor Raid, Nevada was the object of intense attacks by Japanese aircraft. Left in a sinking condition after receiving one torpedo and several bomb hits, she had to be beached. Vigorous salvage work and temporary repairs enabled her to steam to the U.S. west coast in April 1942. She spent the rest of the year receiving permanent repairs and improvements, including a greatly enhanced anti-aircraft gun battery.

Nevada returned to combat during the Attu landings in May 1943. Transferred to the Atlantic in mid-1943, her 14" and 5" guns were actively employed during the Normandy Invasion in June 1944 and the Southern France operation in August and September. The battleship then returned to the Pacific, where she assisted with the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa in 1945.

Though damaged by a suicide plane on 27 March and by an artillery shell on 5 April, Nevada remained in action off Okinawa until June 1945. She spent the remaining months of World War II in the Western Pacific, preparing for the invasion of Japan.
With the coming of peace, Nevada steamed back to Hawaii. She was too old for retention in the post-war fleet, and was assigned to serve as a target during the July 1946 atomic bomb tests at Bikini, in the Marshall Islands. That experience left her damaged and radioactive, and she was formally decommissioned in August 1946. After two years of inactivity, USS Nevada was towed to sea off the Hawaiian islands and sunk by gunfire and torpedos.

Oklahoma – Camden, NJ – 1916 - She was at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked on 7 December 1941. Moored outboard of USS Maryland (BB-46), she was hit by a great number of Japanese Type 91 aerial torpedoes. With her port side torn open over much of its length, Oklahoma rapidly rolled over and sank to the harbor bottom, with the loss of over 400 of her crew. Many of the men trapped in her upturned hull were cut free through the intense efforts of Sailors and civilian Navy Yard employees.

During 1943, Oklahoma was the subject of a massive salvage undertaking, involving turning her upright, patching her damages and refloating her. She was drydocked late in the year to be stripped of guns and other equipment and repaired sufficiently to make her relatively watertight. Too old and badly damaged to be worth returning to service, Oklahoma was formally decommissioned in September 1944. She was sold for scrapping in December 1946, but sank while under tow from Hawaii to California in May 1947.

Arizona – New York, NY – 1916 - Arizona was moored in Pearl Harbor's "Battleship Row" on the morning of 7 December 1941, when Japanese carrier aircraft attacked. She was hit by several bombs, one of which penetrated her forecastle and detonated her forward ammunition magazines. The resulting massive explosion totally wrecked the ship's forward hull, collapsing her forward superstructure and causing her to sink, with the loss of over 1100 of her crewmen. In the following months, much of her armament and topside structure was removed, with the two after triple 14" gun turrets being transferred to the Army for emplacement as coast defense batteries on Oahu.

The wrecked battleship's hull remained where she sank, a tomb for many of those lost with her. In 1950, she began to be used as a site for memorial ceremonies, and, in the early 1960s a handsome memorial structure was constructed over her midships hull. This USS Arizona Memorial, operated by the National Park Service, is a permanent shrine to those Americans who lost their lives in the attack on Pearl Harbor and in the great Pacific War that began there.

The Battleships were sitting DUCKS before the attack. The Pacific Fleet was demoralized and the West coast of the US was in jeopardy of invasion by Japan.

My honor, Blair.

There were mistakes made on both sides. Ours were obvious. The carriers out at sea were a stroke of luck – depending on which version of history one chooses to believe.

The enemy stuck on Sunday morning. Most of the personnel were off base or the casualties would have been much greater. They didn’t hit the fuel oil tanks on the thought the smoke would obscure their pilots’ ability to find targets.

Japan wasn’t looking for a west coast invasion. They knew better. They wanted us unable to impede their progress in their conquest of the western Pacific. The objective was taking us out for a period of six to eight months. They came up way short.

Thanks for posting Arcey. But you missed one....sort of...The USS Utah, was I suppose not technically a battleship anymore, but was stripped of her armament and used for a "target" ship for areal bombing practice. Was hit and capsized during the attack, and is still there, too as a memorial. Not as well known as the Arizona, though. I read an article in a magazine a while back about the salvage operation after the attack, actually, besides the Arizona, Utah, and Oklahoma, almost all the ships sunk or damaged during the attack were salvaged and returned to service.

Mornin' all, thanks for the coffee Roo.  Temp got down to single digits last night again, froze the window shut so I couldn't let the cat out.  The road at the end of our driveway is an ice rink.  Kinda fun watching the local macho-jacked-up-huge-tire-diesil-truck group slip and slide around with their wide ole' street grip tires.  I think most of them have more dollars than sense.... ::)

TK we get them out here in Chesapeake, mostly young kids who have parents with more money than sense. There is usually one a month rolled in the ditches.

Arcey, the flaming float was enough to make good local news footage, I expect we will see a goo din depth investigation by Andy Fow if anyone got hurt.

Rita made supper last night, I'm cleaning up the debris, I am just shaking my head, I have to think and try to use that many pots and pans and dishes to make potatoe soup. ::)  She cooked up sausage, drained it and put it in a bowl. then cooked the soup in a bigger cast iron pan.  ???  Brown sausage, drain most of the grease, don't need the colander and then cook the soup in that, save a dirty bowl, colander and extra pan.

Been miserable cold here for the past week. Highs in the teens & lows around zero, and of course the wind blows. Got a little bit of snow on Saturday but just enough to show how windy it is. Most of the snow is gone - worn out from being blown around.

The waiting period is actually only ten days(gun shows exempt), but I couldn't get to the city for another three.  But it is in my hands now.  The whole family likes it, so that is good, and I got a 50rd box of 230gr FMJs for $22 and some change.

Temp stayed around 25-30 up here, though the city hit 40 ::)

One of the girls in my chemistry class has a cold, and is also VERY adamant that 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar every hour is the cure.  She also can't stand the stuff, so we got to see her make funny faces while drinking it out of a shot glass. :D  It was rather amusing.

Coffee up here, ran Rita to work and found a battery cable end, a brass one to boot, made in you know where, but brass is still better.

BTW after my wife owning it for a month and a half, I drove the wife's station wagon SUV Buick thing, the first thing of that type that wasn't built on a pick-up chassis like an old Bronco or Suburban.  I think I did right talking her into looking at them instead of a 4 door car, not ready to give up The General for one though for me.  Handling on ice was good, I tested it a bit, AWD thing kicks in when you have wheel slippage in front, goes around corners much better on ice than FWD, can't power it around like The General and if I hit my shift points where I need to, think it would mop the Buick up in a 1/4 mile, but the Buick would whip The General on the salt flats.

Tranny seems to be a double Dyna-Flow, shifts 4 times instead of 2, still haven't opened the hood on it, doubt their is a Fireball Straight 8 under there, the dang thing ain't wide enough or long enough. ::)

Heh, heh, heh…..

A fruitful trip. Scored me ah pound of Unique. Wouldn’t been my first choice but it’ll werk in the self-stuffers ‘n the revolvers. Santa showed up early.

Had ta rat out an ole fella (prolly not much older ‘n me) what was gonna get his wife/lady friend hurt. He’s coachin’ ‘er. She’s shootin’ a small auto. Looked goin’ past. She’s got a right hand strong, two hand grip. Left index finger was on the slide. Think that may have been her last shot. On the closed circuit thingy he was shootin’ ‘n she was watchin’. None my business. Felt kinda bad 'bout it but if she’d come out bleedin’, ‘n it’s happened, I’d felt worse.

This is who I think it is I ain’t surprised. Fella styles ‘round the radar trap otherwise known as Waverly. Saw ‘im run the light, yeah, THE light there’s only one, right in front of one the constables one afternoon ‘n the boy didn’t move. Prolly knows sumbody. Too bad ‘e didn’t know the Amtrak thingy that knocked the snot outta ‘im.

It’s what’s left of a ’00 Crown Vic, ex-cop car. News sayin’ he was drunk. Figgers. As the Eagle soars that’s ‘bout two hunnert yards from the ABC store – what’s next ta the 7-11 – what’s next to the cheap motel – what’s next ta the dirty book/DVD store – what’s next ta the 'fine dining’ restaurant.

Litl brother would have taken that can a while back, ended up with Power Pistol, had to go to the computer while he was in the store, kid sellin' it knew nothin', he knew enough to call me.  Have used a lot of Unique, maybe not the best for everything I do, but it will do a lot of what I do out of the same can.  12-28 gauge, and most any pistol round I care to shoot today, good if you keep the types down to just a few.

May switch to Litl Gun when I get a chance to load and shoot more this next year if I can find it.  Will do what I want they say for the 28, the Hornet and the 32 mag, using 4 for the trio and that's the ones I shoot the most.   HS7 they don't make anymore for bird loads, H110 for the heavy 32's, AA1680 for the Hornet and Unique for the target 28 and the plinking 32's.

I bought a can of Unique because I couldn't find a Red Dot load for 20 gauge.  Since then I've found one but haven't tried it yet. I do like the Unique for .357.

Howdy y'all,

'Twas 9 when I got in this mornin' here too. Balmy 32 with a rotten smoke haze, no noticeable breeze to rid the valley. Red burn code on for the 4th or 5th day now.

Walked my feet off last nite, otherwise a tolerable evenin'.

'Roo got a friend in Darby & 'nother from here in Reno with a 2nd place they use for huntin'. Great place up there as well for meat, tho the family named business escaped my memory... suffered a fire 'bout 10 yrs. back & they re-build an' good as ever. Jerky was right tasty.

Red Dot is too fast for the 20, the fastest "Dot" that works is Green and it's almost too fast.  Can't go wrong in most cases with Unique and shotguns between 12 and 28.  Can do about everything you need to do with light to standard loads.  The old DuPont/IMR 7625 can do some good work, never tried it in a pistol except the 32, but there is data.   But for standard loads, that 32 has never been particular, seems to like any powder with data.  I got two sealed cans of Green Dot given to me a while back, never burned that one in it, but I bet it will be fine and will never notice any differance.  I think Slim has found about the same thing with his and standard loads.  I use H110 right now for the Ruger only ones.  Stll like it for what I need in a carry around the farm and such pistol, a 124 FNGC at 1250 fps will do anything I need to do around here and it coming out of a nice 5 1/2" Single-Six just makes it handy to carry.

BTW the 327 S&W that's kinda new is just a little longer case and pretty much our Ruger only 32 mag loads.

Have a friend, retired, used to be a BNSF cop, he came into the gunshop one day, told us about one like that, no one got hurt, guy was racin' the train, almost made it, got caught on the rear bumper and spun around on the other side, hit a car over there.  Well the guy that had stopped wern't sober so he went to jail.  Odd, but amusing in a weird way.

Had another one about 5 years ago, paved county road south of Lincoln, left a sewer-side note at his house, got his little Honda or what ever up to they think about 90 and dove under a coal car at the crossing.  Came out decapitated,( both him and the car) and scared the poop out of the guy waitin' on the ohter side.  He stayed in his lane a couple 100 more yards before he went off in the ditch.

Thinkin' today might be an Espresso bean day, as I found it very difficult to stay awake the last hour of my shift this am. Stood near the door greetin' folks for "shift change" after that & it seemed to help wake up. Temp was 15.

Lots of new folks hired in the last few days tryin' to get the hang of  this "shippin' on steroids" for the last 10 days of Christmas.

Random draw for "safety saves" won me a $50 gift card to any Darden restaurant last nite as well. Santa will deposit that in a stockin' to mom most likely.

morning all, 32 deg and light snow here, just enough to cover the grass as of now. But looks can be deceiving, since the gravel roads already has a layer of packed snow from last week, plus yesterday's freezing rain early, then rain all day, probably some of it freezing again last night. Was a real mess trying to get around yesterday. My Blazer was in the shop, tried to run part of my mail route with the 2wd Dakota. Slid into a ditch trying to climb a hill, shoveled some gravel under the wheels, got out, backed to the bottom, got a run at it......got within 50 feet of the top no more traction, slid 100 feet or more backwards to find the same ditch. Had to wait on the wrecker after that one. Never fear, though, Letty, all the a

Buck, we had our first trumpet do the horse whinny.  He's been playing since the 50's, and even has done improv solos on the spot, switching between his two normal trumpets (one has been tuned to a different key) and flugelhorn.  Needless to say, he did it well.  The part that was hard for him was standing up to do it, what with a broken leg and all.

Filt the station wagon. $3.04 it Sam’s. Wawa ‘round the corner was $3.14. Ain’t gonna talk ’bout the mileage. Went ‘n got the oil changed.. T’was still short on mileage but three weeks late. Hit Harris Teeter fer some fresh fruit I’ll be dicin’ up in a l’il while.

Kempsville Grill what closed up some months ago shows some activity. Someone painted the place a few weeks ago. Somebody else repaved the parkin’ lot. One the big name HVAC companies ‘round this way, RS Andrews, ‘er over there now ‘n it looks like they’ve ripped e’er hunk of ductwork in there out. Even brought a dumpster with ‘em. It reopens inta somethin’ similar ta what it was me ‘n the fat lady’ll go more frequently than we did. Nice l’il Ma ‘n Pa place. Hated ta see it shut down ‘n it was as much our fault as anyone else’s.

The weather's freakin’ fantastic. Dashboard thingy said 56° when I parked it.

Major, it sounds like you need to build an igloo.   ::) :P

Arcey, yer' makin' me jealous with your gas prices.  Our dropped $0.20, down to $3.66/gal.   :-X  With the big oil refinery on the coast just over 100 miles away, one would think the gas prices would be lower.  Heck, the new gas station in town own a large percentage of that refinery.  All the oil is drilled domestically, in the Dakotas, So. Cal. and Alaska, or so I read.

43 here, paid $2.95 for gas yesterday, but we get a break on the stuff with moonshine in it.  About $3.50 for the other, but not everyone has it anymore.

I'd like the next one to burn the 85% stuff, it's about $2.45.

Haven't looked at the weather lately. Don't know if I've complained about it lately but his chemo thing is getting to be a pain in the butt. Literally a pain in the butt. Can't sit on it or stand very long or walk very far. AND I got dehydrated & had to spend another night in the horsepistol.  The good news is I have 3 appointments in a row in this same building this morning. Since I'm already hear I won't have to get up & drive to town.

Missing school this week is kind of inconvenient.  It's finals week & I haven't been here for review so I think finals will pretty easy for my classes this semester. Next week he Christmas break starts & I he 2 full weeks this year.

That's the problem with old farts - we've seen the old stuff work so the new-fangled stuf doesn't impress us.  When I was in college I worked for cabelas answering the phone. Guy called one night & asked if he really needed the $200 scent-proof camo suit to get close to a deer.  I told him no, I had a big old buck sneak up on me that season while I was sitting on a stump smoking a ciggarette. He got with in spittin' distance before I saw him & he didn't know I was there until he moved.

That call was being monitored & I got scolded for talking people out of buying the products.

Sorry that stuff is kickin' you so hard, Stu.  When it's over, and you start feeling better, you will say "whew, that was a rough ride", and then get on with things.  Like Del said, we're pulliin' for ya'.

That coffee is good this morning; I woke up hard, and took a while to get moving.

Had us a couple of real nice days o'er the weekend and early week, cool this morning and cloudy.  Guessers say we might get some precipitation around Friday.

Can't send me to sensitivity training, it would offend me and hurt my feelings so it would be counter productive.

I like that, Del; I wish I had thought of that way back when I was bridling against the rules and fussing about that diversity and sensitivity "training" they put us through when I was gainfully employed.  I grumbled and griped so much I was always Pi$$ing some enlightened someone off, and getting my butt chewed for it.

Y'all have a good day.

Later.

When I'm on the trees during hunting season I want the people to see me and know dang sure what I am, so I wear plenty of orange.

Once while sneaking through the trees with my deer rifle I spotted something kind of deer colored at a little over 100 yds so I raised my rifle to look a it through the scope & saw a guy in carhart coveralls aiming his rifle at me. I was wearing the legal amount of orange at the time but have worn more since.

Mornin’.

Sorry ta hear of the situation, Stu. You’re in my prayers. May everything go well.

Guessers sayin’ up ‘round seventy taday. Station wagon needs a bath but I got stuff ta do inside’s gonna mess that idea up.

Had mighty fine OFSDAR weather yestitty. Got the load right this time. All the knock downs went o’er ‘cept one ‘n that’n was my fault. Hit it way low. It was a tombstone, the middle target in an array of three. Freakin’ thing looked like a middle finger stuck up at me. T’was the only miss of the shootin’ match fer me.

Try’n be careful taday, Tex.

Thanks for the coffee,TLD ;) My wife's dealing with a pinched nerve, did her's bowling. She's still going to the chiro for treatments, but at least she's getting some relief.

42 and a light drizzle here, pretty damp out there.

Del, It didn't look like there was much left in the video report I saw, just awful :(

TK, Hope you find Grandpa's bone, who knows, it might even be collectable if it's the right make and model. Keep me appraised on the hunt ::)

Got a theory on this duck hunters so called reality show, figure the ratings are either down a bit and the whole thing is to get them up after letting him back on, or maybe he wants out.  Since reality shows ain't real, I have been around too long to not be suspicious.    The other question is why haven't the rest of them told A&E to stick it?

Way back before this all started someone asked me if I watched the show, told them no, I don't watch reality shows, but I wouldn't mind going and watching them rehearse.  Trouble is that statement went right over their heads.   ::)  And that is why we have TV dominated by reality shows.

The other question is why haven't the rest of them told A&E to stick it?

They have. Said if he ain't on it there's no show. I don't watch the thing either but I gotta idea they ain't gotta work no more 'n A&E needs them more'n they need A&E.

His free speech rights weren't violated. The government ain't draggin' 'im off for what he said.

Lastly, the whole thing rings hollow. What I'm hearin' is the next season's already been done. Does his suspension include not runnin' the stuff already canned? The Roo dude got the rest of it.

Seein' promos for Nekkid 'n Alone. Nekkid 'n alone onna island. With a whole production crew on site. Yeah. Do watch Top Shot. DVR it 'n run thru the commercials 'n the soap opera parts. Delete the knife throwin' 'n such. Screwed up the one they're runnin' now. Saw who won on Youtube lookin' over target sets. I'd love ta shoot some the stuff they get ta shoot 'n the guns they get ta shoot 'em with.

Werkin' on the evenin' meal 'n surer than heck I didn't have sumthin' I thought I had. Made a trip ta the off site pantry. Collards were comin' out the box when I got there. I's all happy 'n got some for me 'n Ali. Damned if I didn't leave the place without no pork ta cook with 'em. Hate the impact of old age.

Thanks. Merry Christmas to you ‘n yours, Blair. Pay no attention to the Christophobics.

I’m so far outta the TV loop when I first heard of the whole thing they were referrin’ to the fella as “Robertson.” Hell, I was tunin’ it out since I’m stuck in the same city with Pat Robertson ‘n I figgered they was belly achin’ about him - again. No matter what he sez the both sides are gonna start yellin’. It gets old but it brings in donations. No different than pEta.

I didn’t know who Phil Robertson was. I do now. That may have been the purpose of the entire exercise.

Howdy,

Up from my slumber & got some caffeine.

I do watch the show.  I also know hat Phil announced some time back that this was his last season on the show.  He's tired of the yuppies involved.
Hollywood's full of those yuppies & he prolly got a "belly full" of the script. His wallet is fat anyhow. This hoopla will die down soon enuf. Agree with everyone else.

Arcey, Top Shot was the only one I did watch since workin' with a kid who was on the 4th season. Shootin' all those different types of firearms woulda been a kick. He gave an analysis on what it took to shoot each episode.

Looks like I might spend Christmas in the horsepistol but I survived the "procedure" (that term really doesn't describe it for me). Other than some residual pain I'm feeling better now.

Difference between the duck guys & most reality show is Phil Robertson. He's a regular guy & makes no bones about how he feels about the ignorant yuppies that put on this show.  He make very little effort to go along with the script because it's stupid, unless his wife talks him into it.

Anyways………………

Be havin’ some fun here shortly. Fat lady has a lady friend comin’ o’er ‘n they’re gonna start paintin’ the kitchen, ceilin’ first. This ought ta be a hoot. Prolly gonna inhibit my free ingress ‘n egress ta the ‘HEY! Loft’ most the day. Gonna be warm out. Reckon I’ll stay out in the barn.

Slim, my 1911 is from AMRSCOR/RIA, Philippines.  Cute little Commander.  Bushingless barrel, and full length guide rod, which wasn't exactly what I wanted....

PE, I know exactly what you mean with the whole, loosing stuff.  My great-grandpa had a rifle belonging to his great-grandpa, that was supposed to go to my father.  It was stolen from his estate sale, unfortunately.  I really wish it was still around.  It was a Sharps 1859 Rifle, with the wood scorched from when the Yankees raided the camp and it fell in a fire.

I have both, a Taurus and a Armsco, they function as well as my Colt 1911. I was lucky enough to carry my Govt. model 70 on duty for several years. The 45 round has good knockdown power. I always  carried mine "cocked and locked".  Room I just finished Fred Whitfield's book about his life as a PRCA calf roper, being an African-American, in a predominately White sport. I really enjoyed it. I ordered it on my Kindle.

Went over to grandma's today.  Not for Christmas, but to pick up old, old,  old  pictures.   Over three hundred, or so.   :o

Put a few rounds through the 1911.  By a few, I mean 46.  Had to leave a few, "just in case."   ;)  My younger brother was the only one in the family who didn't shoot it.  He took the Remington NMA and Colt Navy fine, but the 1911 scared him.... Sister did well.  Put it in her hands, she pulled the trigger the first time, and looked around at us with a huge smile.  fiver rounds and a small amount of fresh applesauce later, I decided that I don't need to worry about my teenage sister being home alone anymore.   :P

The same backatcha, Miz Letty.

Been rainin’ up in the carpetbagger occupied north, Roo. Supposed ta get here sometime tomorrow ‘n bring the temps down by the afternoon. Ain’t a bad thing, this is a l’il warmer’n I like it.

Got the stuff done. Was still kinda stiff from yestitty. Feel like I’ve been run o’er by a truck. Gonna gobble down some hot dogs ‘n call it quits. Tomorrow starts a long week.

Saw this ‘n thought ‘bout Stu gettin’ drawn down on. Another creative way of gettin’ killed while out huntin’.

ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY

A hunter from Norfolk was found dead Friday night after he apparently fell while climbing from a tree stand, according to the Department of Game andInland Fisheries.

A man, 61, was hunting off Dews Plantation Road west of Smithfield. After he didn't return home, his family called the property owner, who found Beatty hanging upside down from his safety harness about 30 feet off the ground. Tree stands typically aren't that high.

Lee Walker, a spokesman for the Game Department, said it appeared that Beatty may have been climbing down from the stand when his ladder broke. A medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

There is a reason i don't hunt deer in trees, sides that I've never seen a deer in a tree.

One more day for me, store is open Christmas Eve, but I'm off, folks are getting desperate, wanted to tell a couple of them today I'd take Ex-Lax tonight and they could come back tomorrow and I'd s*** it out for them.   ::)  Don't know why, most of those today wanted straw hats, got some, limited sizes and selection, ain't done a fill in on them since about Aug.

Oh we have our fun laughing at people when they are gone.  The way they get so up-set when you don't have what they want, if it is something really needed, yeah I feel bad for them, but most the time there are plenty of other things to get someone.

Nursing crew just woke me up to drug me & check me over.  Doc told me his morning I might go home tomorrow or the next day - might not ::)

Arcey, fallin' out of trees is the number one cause of death & injuries while hunting.  People know that & still climb trees without a safety harness. I know I have, but I was younger & dumber then.

Del, do they want the straw hat because it's cheaper?

There expensive straw hats for over a hundred busk and more. Usually after Labor Day, the wearing of straw hats is discontinued and taken up again after Memorial Day. I put on a small pot for those up at this hour, Enjoy! I have some fresh banana-nut bread to go with the Cawffee.

Mornin’.

Day one……….

Still warm. Shower moved thru a bit ago. Supposed ta do it all day ‘n cool down this afternoon.

Good news yestitty evenin’. The range’ll be available for an OFSDAR party on the 29th.

The pilot (lower case intended) is more’n a l’il left. Think they delight in reportin’ shootin’s durin’ huntin’ season. T’was unusual ta see ‘em report a huntin’ fatality with an unshot victim. First one I remember.

In better times, Earnhardt ‘n Childress were huntin’ somethin’ somewhere. Climbin’ the side of a mountain. Earnhardt slipped ‘n fell, hit Childress on the way down ‘n took ‘im to the bottom with ‘im. T’was reported they bent a rifle but no major injuries.

In my family, we always called them "horse dervers", (phonetic spelling?) much to the dissatisfaction of most French speaking peoples.
BTW, The family last name is spelled Jacques, but pronounced Jakes. (It took almost 100 years for the Church in England to get the spelling correct within their records.)
Marry Christmas to all.

TK,  The Buck that you are thinking about is Buck Trent.  Buck Taylor is a Movie actor that I have known or over 30 years. he was "Newly" on Gunsmoke. He was in Tombstone  "Texas Jack".  His father was  "Dub" Taylor. Buck is a western painter as we'll. Buck goes to the NFR as  well as several major stock shows and rodeos to sell his artwork. I have over a dozen of his prints  hanging in my house. He has a web site, Buck Taylor Art. It contains his prints, rodeo posters and other items.  Buck has been in many westerns,  The Sacketts, Jericho, and  Cowboys and Aliens, just to name few.

Good morning all, and thanks for the coffee.  Roo and TLD:  I realized my mistake about twenty minutes after posting, but when I came back to correct it, the internet was down.   :(
Yesterday was okay, except for the evening.   We got back from a little shooting session with the 1911, and we were barely through the door, when I was hit with a wave of nausea.  Went and flopped on the couch for a few minutes and it was better, but I haven't been eating.  Not even Christmas feast.   Was up all night coughing and sneezing, trying to get warm.  The thermometer read triple digits in my mouth.  I took some pills, and am feeling better, but still have a little less equilibrium than a unicycle on a tightrope.
I hope y'all have a better day.

Happy New Years Eve.... Ah morning rather.... coffee maker is broke , so I'm making it the old way boiling grounds and straining out the grounds ...no promises  :-\  but it used to work on my primitive camping treks.
Course that was different time and years ago....
There is nip in the air, in the 50's someone had pine knot fire going somewhere, that also brought back some good memories.

Headed, into the Work 20 , prolly just do a 1/2 day and kick the guys loose early so they can enjoy tomorrow off....

Here is the verdict on the coffee...........Ummmmmmm, tastes a bit like the dish towel I strained it through,  I think I best stop for cup going in.

I still got some cawfee on if anyone is of a mind for some.

Been nice here, sort'a cool, but mostly sunny during the day.  We're staying in for the evening, don't (never have) do much for New Years in the way of celebrating.  Around here, if you're not down on "The Strip" or Fremont Street (Downtown), staying indoors under a good solid roof is a good thing; too much chance of an errant object falling from the sky; way too many idiots just don't seem to understand that what goes up must come down - sounds like a small war going on outside at midnight.

Here's wishing you all as good, or better year in 2014.
