Hi,

When I worked out my persona, it included owning S&W Schofields with the addition of the Spencer to my outfit.  I have the Slim Jim holster and money/cartridge belt by Old West Reproductions (Rick Bauchman) and an original Spencer shotgun. What do you guys carry to go along with your Spencer?

   Greetings!

Well... I'll tell you what I'd LOVE to pack with my Spencer! First choice would be a S&W #3 Old-Old Model Russian: basically, a S&W 'American' chambered for the .44 Russian Ctg.. It would also need the 8" Bbl., and nickel plate would be a tempting option.
My second choice, neck&neck with the S&W, would be a Colt Double Action Army Model 1878, with a 5-1/2" Bbl. and the same finish options. I simply love the feel of this revolver!!
Now: whose going to make these? My N.A. Schofield is nice, but it's not an Old-Old/American #3! I'm also not really into packing my Colt 1902 "Alaskan/Philippine" DAA around, even though it's been to the "Buffing-Wheel Re-blue" gunsmith {?}! Dad says that I should carry it to wear some of that re-blue off!

Sorry for the Ramble! Be Well, All!

I like to use my Spencer as part of a military outfit.

Sometimes I use it with percussion pistols (both Colt and Remington), carrying them in a pair of CW-period flap holsters.  I load out of the carbine box on the back of my belt. I use a haversack to carry my shotgun shells.  No, I'm not fast, but since I'm shooting a Spencer speed is denitely not an important factor to begin with.

Other time, I prefer to use my conversions in .44 Colt.  In this case, I use a converted Remington and a Richards converted Colt.  My rig is a pair of Trailrider's Fichet-Miller holsters, a leather prairie belt for pistol and rifle cartriges, and a canvas prairie belt for shotshells.

Hi,

At our shoots, I carry my S&W Schofields in a Slim Jim rig by Rick Bachman,  my Spencer fits into a scabbard that Rick (SSS member) made for me using his original Spencer as a guide.  The scabbard has a shoulder strap with about 20 bullet loops.  I use the scabbard when hunting with my Spencer.  I sling the scabbard over my right shoulder and use my right hand to control the movement of the scabbard, 'cause the Spencer is so heavy to its backside.

I  have the .45 Schofield Spencer, which of course shoots the same round as my S&W Schofield revolvers.   I like things simple  ;D ;D ;D ;D same rounds for all that I shoot.

that depends on my mood.  If I want to create a millitary impression, I carry the 1860 Colt Armies for CW era.  Early Indian War stuff I use the 1860 RM Conversions.

If I want to give the impression of an early CW period scout, it'll be a brace of 1st Model Dragoons.

Depends what kind of mood I am in...
My brace of Rem MNA w/ R&D conversions, or....
My '51 & 61 Navy conversions...
On rare occasions, my NA Schofield. ;D

Either a Rogers & Spencer, a S&W Schofield, or a 75 Remington.  Usually a Rogers & Spencer.

For reenacting, two DA Starrs on the saddle and one more on my pistol belt. An 1840 "old Wristbreaker" Cavalry Saber is for real close encounters. For CAS, a Starr SA and either a Rem New Army repro or a 1860 snub nose.

My Spencer is an original in .56-50 calibre.  My side-arm of choice is a RM 1860 Conversion in .44 calibre, with the 8 inch barrel.  If I am shooting a match that requires a second revolver, then the 1872 Open Top, also in .44 calibre, is my second revolver.

Other than that, a par of Starr Self-Cocking Army revolvers in .44 calibre.

For me it will be the 1858 Rem 44Colt conversion firing the 44Colt and/or the 1872 Open Top firing the 44Rus.

Howdy,

My current Spencer is a 56-50 Taylor's. I holster an 1872 Open Top in .45 Schofield (My Hnery shoots a .45 Schofield load, too) and an 1873 cavalry model .45 Hartford.  I will be getting another Schofield, so it will be a Schofield and Open top most of the time.

I agree with the conversions to go along with the Spencer - they just look right. I even went as far as to get a IW period flap holster and cartridge box to go on that "fair-weather-Christian" belt. Another plus is there's no way you can get a .44 Colt to chamber in the Spencer - it just slips right out the barrel.

Depending on how I feel that day, It'll either be a pair of 1861 C&Bs, or a pair of 7 1/2" SAAs,
.45 colt. Shoot .45 S&W in those to match my Spencer.   For A full Military Impression I'll
Holster a single Colt Richards Conversion (one of the few good ASMs) with an M1860 Ames
saber on the other side.

helo all - for me it's the .44 Colt conversions - no mistaking the cartridges and even if you do, it'll slip right through the Spencer barrel :)

It sure does simplify things having  all three shooting the same caliber.  I have both 7"'  S&W Schofields and my Spencer also using  .45 Schofield rounds.

Howdy,

Well, I just decided to start using the pair of charcoal blue Cimarron Richards-Mason .44 Colts as my primary guns.  They go equally well with either my Henry (also charcoal blue) or my Spencer.

Depending on the reenactment, 1 or 2 1860 Colt Armys or a Remington.

Excellent question !
It enables me to tell you that I've just bought a Wells Fargo 1st model Schofield revolver (original) to go along with my original Spencer carbine.
Life is too short to be small  !!!!

Now THAT was not reasonable, was it ?

PS : It will make some people crazy, but I actually plan to shoot it - once, twice a year.

Most shoots you will find me with a Taylor's Spencer in .44 Russian, BP of course, and a brace of 1860 Armys.  Once in a while I'll bring out the 1872 Open-Tops in .44 which love the same ammo.  I can feel the neeeed for a .56-50 creeping up on me... ;D

The revolver in the picture is a Richards Mason 44 Colt (not my curent charcoal blue one). I had one when they first came out, but foolishly sold it shortly after High Sierraa 2004 where the picture was taken.

The Holster is a Dillon Slim Jim.  I did not like the way the 8" barrel hung out of the Dillon, which was cut large to fit even Vaqueros!  Now using a COWS slim Jim and a Charcoal blue richards Mason.  I only see about 1/2 of barrel peepingout of it.  Good holster, though.  Fits my Schofield and Hartford Cavalry model too.

Whitney Navy (I'm a fan of Whitneys), Remington OM Navy or, in a pinch a Colt '51 Navy. The Whitney and Remington hold a lot more powder than the Colt if you have to knock something down.

Also, Jim Kenner made me a carbine sling with a barrel loop for my Burnside and Spencer. One like it is in Marcot's book. Works great on hunting trips or horseback.

Well:
Even though I'm still waiting on actually receiving my Spencer carbine (56-50) - it is en route, and I believe that the Marshal will pur a "locate" out on it if it doesn't show up soon - I guess I can get in on this thread.

Since a primary reason for wanting my Spencer was the fact that Canada got a bunch of Model 1865 carbines and rifles in 1866, with the carbines issued to cavalry, if I were carrying the carbine for "re-enacting" I suppose I'd want to stick with an appropriate handgun to go with it.  At that time, Canada had its Volunteer Militia Cavalry (our only cavalry, actually) armed with London Model Colt 1851 revolvers.  Matter of fact, I have such a beast - one of a sort of "low budget commemorative issue" done 30 years or so ago up here.  They marked a maximum of 800 (the total number of original 1851's Canada had acquired) Uberti "London Model" Navy revolvers as the originals would have been marked (i.e. Province, Unit and "rack number" markings, on the left grip panel) and I happen to have one of those repro revolvers ....

For CAS purposes, I guess I'd just have to say that I'd still be shooting my brace of .45 Model 1875 Remington-clone Ubertis (or my backups, a Uberti Cattleman and a Thunderer, also .45's).  When it comes to GAF-type events, I hav other options - e.g my .476 Enfield, or a .455 Webley ...

one starr double action or the rogers and spencer .44. civil war leather (holsters, belts, carbine sling). i keep it late civil war or early indian wars. good luck, geo. (all right, the rogers and spencer never saw use during each action but it's a percussion revolver).

It depends on the period.  For my Indian war USS impression I pack my 72 Open Top, strong side
and my 73 SAA cross draw. Bouth in 38 and bouth are Cimaron/Ubertis.
For my earlier impression CW I pack my 51 Navy Colt Signature strong side and my 61 Navy Hege Uberti, Cross draw.
The cartridge shooters have custom made leather. Made by the Norwegian "Tex"...!
My CW percussion shooters have CW holsters, one flap and one open.

I got to say that I belief the "Hogleg" percusions are the ones that will suit the Spencer Rifle best.

Well I have not got my Spencer yet, in is on its way from Italy.  Probably been transported on a mule.!!!

My shot guns are the original 1887 Winchester lever stroker and a Stoeger double.

Did I tell you all that I had the oportunity to examine an Original in Florida in January?  Even tried to talk the owner into parting
with it,but to no avail...!  Great loocking Spencer Carabine it was.! ::)

I'm still assembling my rig. Right now it'll be my pair of Pietta "Sherrif's", 1851 frame in laser engraved natural steel chambered for .44 instead of .36, herecy I know, but they just looked so darn good in that Cabela's catalog and I love the balance of the 5.5" barrels with the laser engraving. 2nd choice would be my Remington Navy 36's, one older Navy Arms one new Pietta. Ultimately though, since my Spencer is a .44 Russian, I'll have either a pair of 1860 Army R-M conversions or a pair of Open Tops in that caliber. I do my own leather and some metalwork and am already working on my rigs and some accessories to go with these choices.

Shotgun will be either my original W. Richards 16 Ga Belgian (24" barrels, fully engraved, GOOD Damascus barrels) or an early Rossi 20 Ga with the Greener crossbolt and 30" barrels I'm having to restock. Of couse I'll use Magtech or Rocky Mountain all brass shells loaded with the black stuff.

Howdy to the camp,

I guess now I will be packing an 1872 Open Top in 45 COLT that is on the way to me from EMF.  These will be replacing the 45 Schofield ones, I guess.  I am getting it for an article, but will probably keep it.  I have an Uberti 1860 with an R&D 45 Colt cylinder to pair it up with.  What I really want is one of the Uberti gated 1858 45 Colt factory conversions when they come out.  That would go better with the 1872 Open Top than the 1860 ith the R&D.

The main question is whether I will use the 56-50 rifle or 56-50 carbine, now that I have both!
Title: Open Tops (WAS Re: What do you holster to go along with your Spencer?)
Post by: Bead Swinger on September 08, 2006, 03:34:56 PM
Hi All -
I'm really new to the SASS shooting - 'still haven't made it to my first shoot (planned for the end of Sept).  :) If I take to this, I was seriously thinking about purchasing a pair of R&M conversions. I'm in the process of trying to sell an original 42-pattern rifled musket to support the endeavor. :'(

Anyway, I was REALLY surprised to see how many folks owned up to shooting some variety of open tops along with the Spencer.  Wow!  ;D I thought I was a little 'out there' being more interested in long-barreled open-tops than the more standard 'cowboy' guns. Since I hope to shoot 56-56, the pistol caliber doesn't mean a lot to me yet.  .38 Spec., .44LC or .45LC all seem equally interesting.

If anyone wants to pass on (offline) suggestions as to what R&Ms to buy and why, or suggesting reasonable ways of selling/trading my '42, it'd be most appreciated.

Changed my arsenal...! The 38s are history. I got me a Feinwerkbeau Rogers&Spencer 44 percusion, and that is one fine pice of machinery. A litle light on the trigger, the first match I used it, I had a few misses due to to the fact that as a target shooter you are endulged to be almost there, but in CAS been almost there can result in a few premature shots.  I just need some more practice, and I am not in to this to be the "fastest".....!  It just happends that I love old firearms and history and to dress up!
I am looking for another hogleg to pair up with the R&S..... Been thinking of Ruger Old Army, but to new and not historicly acurate either..... So I have desided on a Remington 1858 5,5"............ That will be a mans arsenal, toghether with the Spencer 56-50 and the double street-howitzer...!

OK - I took the plunge.  I bought an Uberti New Model Russian (6 1/2") and an Uberti 1872 Colt Open Top (7 1/2") and .44 Russian ammo to go with the Old Girl.  With a little luck, I'll have them at my second shoot on Saturaday.  We'll see how well UPS delivers.  If all goes well, I'll probably be making holsters this winter.

Hi - UPS did deliver on time, and the 44 Russian is really a great pistol round.  It delivered great accuracy and reasonable power/recoil.  'Used a commercial 200 gr RNFP on top of ~3.6 gr. of Trail Boss (9 gr. by volume).
The New Model Russian wasn't quite as handy as the Colt Open Top, but she really shoots great, and was significantly easier to load and clean. The Colt was a real joy to shoot (the black powder rounds were a hoot!), but what a pain to unload and especially to clean.  All-in-all a great pair.

Hello SSS,

It really would be great if some of you would post photos of your Spencer and your revolver/holster set up.  You know what they say,..."a picture is worth a thousand words".  If you don't know how to post a photo, just Email me your photos (to) fsgrand2@fairpoint.net  and I'll add them to your original post on this thread, or you can start a new post and I'll add the photos there.

As I did on the very first post to this thread:
