For a mild load I use 13.0 gr of Trail Boss with either a Lee 330 gr RNFP or Lyman 292 gr #457191. they are fun to shoot and keep a group at 50 yds (haven't ventured to longer distances with TrailBoss) --for longer (100-200 yds) I use the Lyman with Holy black.
all the best

In my 24" Chappy 45-60, I load 23gr. 4759 topped with 5 pieces Quaker Puffed Rice(filler) pushing a 300gr. cast .457 diam., flat nose bullet. This gives me an average M.V. of 1422 fps. If you leave out the filler, the M.V. will drop due to unburned powder left in the bore.

Well Looks like I found what works in my gun .
Based on the phone call with AA
17-22 Grains of 5744 with a 260 grn Cast
Sorry no time to chrono yet but I won the Wis State Champ Long Rang smokeless lever cat.
w/ 20 grains 5744 and the 260 grn FPRN
My Spotter said the group size was about 4" @ 160 Yards under rapid fire 8 round on target in 34 seconds
nice and mild
Let me know if it works for you
Try @ your own risk Your milage may vary.

I'm using a 210g. Lyman bullet mold, 50/50 ww and linotype. I'm using a .404 sizing die from Magma. My barrel slugged at .403. I'm using XMP 5744/21g. They crono at average 1500fps with a variance of about 20fps. I use polyester quilt badding/high loft (cut with a 40 caliber wad punch) over the powder somewhat loosely. The powder burns better, the accuracy is better, and the velocity is more consistant than without the filler. I'm using Lyman Alox/wax lube but am going to try some felix lube next. I am having a blast with this gun and I like the caliber. I've always been a 40 cal. fan. light recoil and accurate.
