Title: Henry rear sight / 1866 rear sight
Post by: sundance44`s on June 11, 2009, 09:47:19 AM
I`ve been liveing with a Henry shooting low for a few years now ...I`ve filed the front sight down to a nub and she still shoots about an inch low ............with out some serious gunsmith work ..I was thinking maybe the 1866 rear sight might be adjustable enough to raise my POA ........but will it fit the dovetail on the Henry ?  anyone have a clue ?

I`ve been shooting .255 gr bullets with 40 grs of 3F goex under them ...still an inch below POA at 25 yards .....My front sight is filed down flush with the frame piece that holds it in .... I can live with out the ladder sight , the 66 rear sight is more to my likeing also .......I went ahead and ordered the 66 sight from VTI .. I`ll post my results .
My gunsmith said he could fix the problem by bending the barrel .........I don`t want to go there at all ...he said I couldn`t stand to watch him do it ....fact is I couldn`t stand to hear he did that to my Henry ... >:(

New 66 sight came in from VTI ...something I didn`t consider could have been a problem ....the rear sight dove tail on the Henry is located to far back to just swap the two sights ............I took my rifle to my gunmaker friend ...he cut a new dove tail further forward for me and made a blank for the dove tail for the old sight ......
The fix lookjs good and POA is where I want it now ............................no barrel bending required for me ... ;D

A lighter bullet will shoot lower.  Try a 200gr bullet with the same charge.

I was wanting mine to shoot higher not lower ..........mine came out of the box shooting 12 inches low ...
hey something new ....a friend of mine just bought a new Henry .....I went with him to the range with it ...he was worried his would shoot low like mine did ............................to our supprise his new Henry shot 12 inches high ....hahahaha ...the wonderful Italian mass production guns .....
Something I noticed looking at this new Henry ...it only has one screw in the top of the tang .......when did Uberti change this ?
My Henry is 7 years old and has 2 tang screws ...........maybe I missed something ..been out of pocket for a while I guess ...
