I had to replace the extractor on my original '76. I could not find an original, so I replaced it with one from Chapparal (charter arms).
The new extractor bangs into the lower portion of the receiving notch in the barrel and will not let the action close.
Question:
Is it just a matter of re-shaping the end of the extractor to ramp into place to close the action or is there something else i should be looking at?
Howdy, 1988RRC. :)
Best case is that you simply need to contour the end of the new extractor to allow for proper engagement.
Why did you replace the old extractor? If it was working, you might compare the contour to the new. Now if the old one was not extracting the cases, it could be that someone in the past reshaped it in an attempt to circumvent the exact problem you now find with the replacement! Check your bolt face and make sure it still has the little "shelf" (lower cartridge rim support) on the bottom. Those are often broken off, and without it, the extracted brass falls loose when the shell is withdraw.
Worst case - The rifle is a "system" and as the various parts wear, things begin to "droop." :-\ (Same thing happens to people! :D) Wear in the links, link pins, carrier and frame can all contribute to the situation. Take it a piece at a time and try to isolate the problem.
Working with old guns is like turning over rocks in the garden; Everytime you turn one over, you find another bug! ;)
Howdy 1998RRc.
If you can't make the Chappy extractor work, Buckingham's has the part listed in his catalog. Buckingham's Antique Winchesters
no website but call him (713-559-4169) . He's in Trenton Tennessee. Prices are a little high, but he's the best source of
Winchester parts I've found.
Good luck,

I should of mentioned the original extractor was broken off (cross pin still in place) when i got the rifle. I bought the extractor from chapparell after checking on several other sources and striking out, i did not know about Buckinghams until a few weeks ago....i have since purchased items from him.
this being my first '76 to deal with, i have another question about the extractor: does the extractor simply pivot up and down at the cross pin with no tension or 'spring' to the extractor?
PS: I found out that buckinghams finger lever spring have to be reduced in width to allow the cover plate to fit properly.

The extractor does not pivot at all. The extractor is in fact a spring, and as the bolt is closed, the end slides up and snaps over the rim of the case. The extractor and the cartridge rim support hold the case firmly, until stripped free by the rising carrier. :)
My experience with the Chapparal extractor (most cause the bolt to lift upon closing) is that it is too long and re-profiling it leaves the slot that rides up over the case rim too far forward. It's just built wrong :-\

so, even if i were to re-shape the front end, the fact that there is no 'spring' to the extractor makes it useless? i need to find another one?

Call Albert Buckingham or Winchester Bob.
Be sure to explain the situation.
After about a dozen replacements in six different Crap-arals, I gave up :-[

received the Buckingham extractor, had to open the pin hole up 1/64" for pin to fit, but it corrected the problem i was having with the chappie extractor. thanks for the help
